A matched suite of 22ct gold earrings and 18ct gold bangle by Ilias Lalaounis, the earrings of triple flame form, possibly from the 'Palaeolithic and Neolithic Collection', with hand-hammered textured finish, London import hallmarks for 22ct gold (916 parts out of 1000), also with stamp 'LLD' for Lalaounis Ltd and plaque with designer's mark and Greek inscription, post and clip fittings, length 4cm, weight 24.41g; together with a hinged crossover bangle of hollow graduated cylindrical form with sealed tapered ends, similar hammered textured finish, London import hallmark 1989, also stamped with Lalaounis symbolic cartouche, 'LLD, A21, 750, Greece' etc, internal width 5.4cm, gross weight 46.68g (2) Ilias Lalaounis was the pre-eminent Greek jewellery designer of the latter 20th century and of international renown. He was born in Athens in 1920, into a long line of goldsmiths, joining the family firm in the 1940s. He showed an early interest in historic techniques and styles, so that when he established his own company in 1969, both aspects were evident in his work, which was almost exclusively made in 18ct or 22ct gold, developing the beauty of the precious metal without the distraction of gemstones. His world standing was acknowledged when he was elected - the only jeweller ever - to the French Academie des Beaux Arts in 1990. His four daughters now run the company.
