Lot 56

American War of Independence seven complete volumes of the Journals of the House of Lords covering the years 1765 –1787 carrying the verbatim proceedings in the House of Lords for every government measure both national and international during that period. This period was of course dominated by the events in America leading to the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the subsequent American Revolutionary War leading to the birth of the USA. These volumes which were published contemporaneously contain the verbatim information as it unfolded in the House of Lords with in many instances the actual speeches of the King and the Peers during these momentous events. The period covered by the volumes date from the introduction of the Stamp Acts through to the period when Britain finally recognised her former American colonies as an independent state. As such they provide scholars of the American War of Independence an unrivalled primary source of information on the day to day progress of events. There is for example the declaration in May 1773 of the measures on the exportation of Tea to the American colonies which led in December of that year to the famous ‘Boston Tea Party’. There is also the Quartering Act of 1765 which required the billeting of British troops and which led to rioting in New York. The actual Declaration of Independence was signed when the British Parliament had been prorogued but immediate reference to it is made in the speech of George III on the State Opening of Parliament on October 13th 1776. The Journals continue with many references to the on-going war in America such as listings of new troops lists of prizes taken and in 1782 there is a resolution: ‘...that this House will resolve itself into a committee of the whole House to enquire into the causes of the great loss which the nation has sustained by the surrender of the whole Army under the command of Lt Gen Earl Cornwallis at York Town and Gloucester in the Province of Virginia as Prisoners of War...’ Each volume is elephant folio in size and unbound. Pagination ranges from 602 to 820pp per volume. These journals had a very limited print run being produced in an edition originally intended for distribution to national and local archives. This was never carried out and as such the present volumes are extremely rare.

Lot 345

WWII – Adolf Hitler – Mein Kampf 1st edition 1925 laminated covers library label of Der Deutschen Technischen Hochschule in Brunn to inside cover (access number 32.283/VI) further label affixed to title page with a Russian stamp and another card affixed to reverse of title page indicating a Swiss collector dated 1929. Indistinct ownership signature to title page dated 1925 otherwise interior pages appear good. Hitler’s book ran into many editions and is still being produced today. However the first edition produced in 1925 is one of the rarest books on the market as only 500 copies were produced. This edition contained only the first part of Hitler’s epic. Sales were reasonable so the publishers agreed to a second edition which appeared in 1926. This carried a second part marking its first appearance.
