No.127, p.205.Shortly after moving to Paris from Brittany in 1904, O'Conor produced a group of studio interiors in which the figure was portrayed against the light, or contre-jour. Doubtless he was aware of the use made of this technique by Degas and Bonnard, both of whom took similar delight in the resonance and ambiguity of shadows.O'Conor responded to the new challenge with gusto. Finding his feet in new cosmopolitan surroundings, he felt, impelled him to develop a new approach. For the first time in his life he was the proud and sole occupier of a spacious studio, illuminated on one side by a series of large windows. He quickly found that the effects of light and shade, contrast and colour could be endlessly adjusted by placing his models at varying distances from the windows, and by painting them at different times of day. One way to expand the range of such opportunities was to interpose his subjects in the space between the light source and his easel, thereby making it appear as if they were emerging dramatically from the shadows.O'Conor's contre-jour body of work comprises a self-portrait and several paintings of nude and clothed female models. The present work is arguably the most surprising and the most daring of the entire group. The figure is viewed at close proximity, so that the masses of her torso and skirt completely dominate the composition; we are, in truth, almost within touching distance of this mantled figure whose facial features we are unable to discern. The light reflects off her neck, shoulder and bodice, dazzling in its brightness, and yet the absence of detail that is a direct corollary of the viewing conditions means that she must remain an enigma.Capturing such a scene with a camera would be virtually impossible - the lens could never cope with the extreme light-dark contrasts. Only a brave artist would attempt it in paint, knowing that the glare of light from behind the subject would demand something extra from the colours at his disposal. O'Conor's solution is easy to discern: he pushed the plastic properties of oil paint to new extremes of gesture and impasto. The sensuous build-up of pigment in this work is at once highly experimental and daring. Whilst the mosaic-like textures prompt comparison with Sickert's paintings dating from 1907, such as 'The Juvenile Lead', the approach of the Irishman is so radical as to be ahead of its time, anticipating the work of contemporary artists such as Frank Auerbach.Jonathan BeningtonA major exhibition, Roderic O'Conor and the Moderns at the National Gallery of Ireland, co-curated by Jonathan Benington runs until October 28th 2018

British Medals, George IV, Coronation 1821, silver medal, by Thomas Wyon Jr. and Benjamin Wyon, laureate bust r., GEORGIVS IV DG BRITANNIARVM REX FD, rev. Britannia seated, with lion, trident and shield, writes Coronation date on tablet, MAGNUS SÆCLORUM NASCITUR ORDO, 50.5mm. (BHM.1101, not recorded in silver, but this specimen noted in supplement; Eimer 1144), in square maroon leather fitted case of issue with Wyon’s stamp on inner lid, choice, virtually mint state and exceedingly rare *ex Maj. R. M. O. de la Hay, Christie’s, 27 May 1981, lot 163 Benjamin Wyon was using a bust of George IV by his elder brother Thomas Wyon Jr., who had died in 1817.
British Medals, A bespoke model of King Edward’s Chair, by Asprey & Co. Ltd., made for the Coronation of George VI (or perhaps the intended Coronation of Edward VIII), the chair modelled in accurate detail with a stone ‘Stone of Scone’, 111mm. tall, base 70 x 54mm., Birmingham hallmark, 1936 and Asprey & Co. Ltd. maker’s mark, contained in a Royal blue velvet and silk-lined red leather fitted case, with double opening doors for display, Asprey stamp on one inner door, superbly made The Asprey archive was destroyed by enemy action in World War II, and we can offer no further information. The Coronation Chair was made for King Edward I to enclose the famous Stone of Scone, which he brought from Scotland to Westminster Abbey in 1296. The chair itself was made c. 1300-1301. The four lions on which the chair rests, were added in 1727 and are of gilt-bronze.
Adolf Hitler's Personal Yacht Aviso Grille, Books from the Library and Paperwork from the German Yacht Grille. Original communications from "Kriegsmarinearsenal Keil" dated October 1943 and January 1945, relating to "Aviso Grille" stamped and initialled. In addition book "Die Seestrassenordnung" 1914 from Grille's library, again with some very interesting original stamps etc. Two other German language books, one Deutsches Ahnenerbe, this with a stamp "Kommando U-Stitzzunst Narvik". Also included is a contemporary newscutting (1946) showing the "Schikelgruber Souvenir" Grille at Hartlepool. The collection (5 books and documents)
Historically Interesting Paperwork Grouping of Nuremberg War Trials Interest, documents relate to Dr Alfred Scholth who was “Chef der Heeresforst abteilung” (Chief of Army Forestry Department). Included in the grouping is his original International Military Tribunal identity pass allowing entry to the Palace of Justice for the Defendants Information Centre authorised by Lt Robert Tait; addressed envelope with cancel and stamp from Allied Prison Spandau; printed calling card; photograph of Scholth and his wife with painting of him in uniform behind; letters from the wife of Walter von Brauchitisch, plus other items. Interesting grouping relating to one of the most famous criminal trials in modern history.
Historically Important Handwritten Letter from Field Marshall Montgomery, Written to a Military Friend Brigadier A.K. Hay When D-Day was Imminent. The letter is on 21st Army Group, Headquarters notepaper and is fully handwritten. Brigadier Hay served with "Monty" at the British Army's premier training school at Camberley and as Monty writes "I have enjoyed putting into practice against the Germans the theories you and I used to teach at Camberley" The letter is dated 3rd June 1944 and at the time D-Day was expected to be the 5th (later delayed because of bad weather to the 6th) and Hay would have fully understood the comment " At the moment I am pretty well occupied-as you can imagine" Montgomery also refers to Dick O'Connor another friend of Hay, who had escaped from an Italian POW camp to take a key position IN 21st Army Group. Unusually the envelope has been addressed by Monty himself, stamp and dated with a Censor stamp and signature.
