Mostly early 20th cent. but also incl. late 19th cent. cards and some later cards, all but a few stamped and addressed (many to members of the Van Andel family, a number of those cards to or from addresses in Shanghai and Hongkong), all inserted with the address-side visible, the cl. album w. Jugendstil decoration, folio-sized. Bookblock loosening at upper hinge, edges of upper cover worn. A rich, international collection, especially important for both the many stamps showing dates and places (most of the cards w. 2-5 of those), as well as the paper stamps. Alexander Willem van Andel was manager for the Holland-China Trading Comp. in Shanghai, explaining the many cards sent to or from Shanghai and Hong-Kong (the Van Andel family home-addresses in the Netherlands were in Rotterdam, also includes early cards w. stamp "Waspik" and other sm. Dutch places). Many paper stamps are German, but a number of them have Chinese paper stamps from Hong Kong etc. Also includes stamps from Egypt, Gibraltar, Sweden, The Philippines, U.S.A., Tunisia, Great Britain, Ceylon, Indonesia, The Netherlands, France, "Congo Belge" etc. Most of the cards were originally issued in European countries, but a number of photocards show street scenes in Shanghai, Beijing etc., a few are with Chinese text and stamps only. Her dances and costumes appealed to the Western fascination w. the exotic, ancient and "oriental" in the 1920s and beyond. 16 plastic sandwich bags filled with water (now evaporated), mounted on black flannel on chipboard, 50 x 50 x 4 cm. The backside contains a wooden frame, 38.5 x 38.5 x 4 cm, painted black. Artists' stamp on verso, stamped in black on chipboard, stating 'henk peeters/ title aquarel on black /date design 1961/ nr / date fabrication 1965/ nr 2/5'. Title, date and edition number are added in black marker. Added is an envelope sent by Peeters containing 22 original empty sandwich bags (from the 1960s, not produced anymore) so the owner can replace the bags and refresh the water. The plastic bags are currently empty with remnants of calcium from the evaporated water, the flannel shows light fading. Provenance from a private collection, derived from Galerie A, Amsterdam. The work was shown in the exhibition 'Nul' at galerie Schoeller in Dusseldorf, 1994. Henk Peeters (1925 - 2013) was a prominent member of the Dutch ZERO movement, and curator of international ZERO exhibitions. His 'aquarel' works were made in various sizes and backgrounds, with different numbers of bags. In 1965 he executed a ceiling aquarel, an installation of about one hundred plastic bags filled with water hanging from the ceiling of the Amsterdam RAI confection centre.
