LA FONTAINE JEAN DE: (1621-1695) French Fabulist & Poet, known for his Fables. An extremely rare D.S., De la Fontaine, one page, 8vo, n.p., 28th September 1656, in French. The boldly penned holograph document is a receipt in which the poet acknowledges the receipt of 'thirty three silver coins' worth of mixed woods to use during year one thousand six hundred and fifty-seven, with sixty-six pounds paid for my entry and exit rights' from Claude Lamblet, residing in Igny, and further stating 'I hold him good for the thirty-three silver coins and all the rest'. With integral leaf bearing a few ink calculations in an unidentified hand. Three neat ink annotations at the head of the page and a red circular stamp to a clear area of the lower half of the page. VG. £3000-4000
CHATEAUBRIAND FRANÇOIS-RENÉ DE: (1768-1848) French Writer, Politician and Historian. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. L.S., Chateaubriand, one page, 8vo, Paris, 12th October 1842, in French. In a letter full of subtile humor, Chateaubriand starts with an exclamation `How could I, Sir, get confused and take a Bishop for an Archbishop! It cries out for vengeance and I beg you not to believe a single word I may say if I have the misfortune to say anything in the future. But I am Sir quite old and ill and I hope that the world is henceforth safe from my mistakes´ further thanking his correspondent for his letter and stating `Thanks God I know myself; I don´t have any kind of admiration for my puny person; I know well that I ramble..´ . Chateaubriand also explains that he cannot write due to rheumatism an that he is obliged to dictate. With a very small collection stamp to the end of the text and few very minor stains, otherwise VG. £200-300. EDIT PENDING!!
GREENE GRAHAM: (1904-1991) English Novelist. A.N.S., GRAHAM GREENE, one page, 8vo (squared graph paper removed from a notebook), n.p., n.d. In fountain pen ink Greene has penned, in full, 'LA DOTTORESSE ELIZABETH MOOR Les Memoires d'une Femme Impossible Presente par GRAHAM GREENE', with one holograph correction ('Receville') in another hand. Together with a T.L.S., Graham, on behalf of Greene by his secretary in his absence, one page, small 4to, Paris, 2nd July 1975, to Georges [Belmont]. Greene, who dictated the letter, states that he telegraphed his correspondent 'approving the maquette of the cover for the Dottoressa' and continues to state 'I like the idea very much, though as I said if it were possible to enlarge the Dottoressa's name it would be better and I suggest a slight dimunition of my name. Couldn't she at least be in dark type - but perhaps you intend that anyway'. In concluding Greene states 'I am afraid there is no chance of a novel in 1976. I have taken up an old abandoned one, but I am by no means sure that I shall get it finished'. Also including a 7 x 9.5 photograph of Elizabeth Moor seated in a three quarter length pose. RICHTER HANS: (1843-1916) Austrian-Hungarian Conductor. A.L.S., Hans Richter, one page, small 8vo, London, 1st November 1884, to Ellen Joachim. Richter thanks his correspondent for her invitation but informs her that he won´t be able to accept it as he has to go to Birmingham. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope (stamp neatly removed) addressed in his hand. VG £100-120. A few months after the present letter was written Richter claimed artistic responsibility for the Birmingham Festival, giving him worldwide recognition.
FEODOROVNA ALEXANDRA: (1798-1860) Princess Charlotte of Prussia. Empress Consort of Russia 1825-55, wife of Emperor Nicholas I. A.L.S., Alexandra, one page, small 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Countess Orloff, in French. The Empress informs her correspondent having heard insistently about her being ill, and states `I need to meet you and to talk to you about something... Are you really ill, could I meet you for only a quarter of an hour at home?´ and further insisting `If not, send me a written answer and I will write to you explaining what it is about´ With integral address leaf with a small circular blue stamp affixed bearing the day of the week 'Mardi'. VG £200-300
[RUSSIA]: Two Russian certificates related to the Sainte Anne first class Knights appointments. One page each, 4to, Kalisz, October 1825 and August 1826, in Cyrillic. Two partially printed documents, the first reporting that according to 3rd February 1816 decree, each Knight having received the first class title of Sainte Anne gets obliged to donate to the Imperial Russian Orders 200 rubles for charity. Signed by the chief of Chancellery. The second being a receipt given by the President of the province of Kalisz, Polish Kingdom, to Knight Radoshevsky, having paid 200 rubles which will be sent to charity institutions. This document bearing to the front an ink stamp. EX, 2 £80-100
ALEXANDRA FEODOROVNA: (1872-1918) Empress Consort of Russia, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. The last Tsarina of Russia, known for her notorious friendship with the Russian mystic Rasputin. A very fine signed sepia 10 x 13 photograph, the image showing the Empress seated in an elegant three quarter length pose in semi profile. Photograph by Boissonnas and Eggler and bearing their blind embossed stamp to the lower left of the mount. Signed ('Alexandra') in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer's mount and dated 1914 in her hand. Rare. Some light age wear to the edges of the photographer's mount and with a few professional repairs to the verso, otherwise VG. £2000-3000. Provenance: The photograph is from the personal collection of Her Imperial Highness Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna (1882-1960) Grand Duchess of Russia, daughter of Emperor Alexander III. Sister of Tsar Nicholas II.

Martinoni dating: second quarter of the 18th Centuryprovenance: BresciaSmooth, two-stage barrel, octagonal at the first part provided with a stamp depicting brass horse and star between eight lilies, then round, with smooth and beaded rings at the girdle, slightly bell mouthed nozzle; flintlock signed "P. MARTINONI"; briarwood stock with brass mounts engraved with floral motifs, on the back is a button to fold the butt.
