The first British Television Advertisement – Gibbs S.R. Toothpaste: The only known surviving shooting copy of the storyboard,Telecast at 8.10pm on Thursday 22nd September 1955. The period Gistetnograph of the whole storyboard in 12 parts, with typed captions for the voice-over from the pan-in of the stream and block of ice to the happy lady brusher and tube in the card sleeve, captions with shooting notes, client note box filed with the advert job 5530 and client D. W. Gibbs, verso with typed label headed Young & Rubicam Ltd giving full details of the shooting schedule at Pathé Studios, Wardour St. at 8.00pm (changed by hand to 8.30pm), on 14th July 1955, a further note below in ink from the sender to the first recipient whose input to the project was crucial, all stamped randomly in blue stamp pad APPROVED FOR SHOOTING; in its original-sending roll tube to Miss M. R. Mills, postmarked 1955.12.1/4” wide, 14.1/4” high. Footnote: The storyboard itself is presumed lost, as these companies simply didn’t keep storyboard art after shooting. In asking for a copy the same year of transmission, Miss Mills has unintentionally and remarkably given us all a glimpse of the original artwork which would have been discussed, approved upon and then shot. This is very important independent British television history. The storyboard comes close but not pure to what was actually shot and transmitted. In the final caption box, two endings are given for consideration which are “Get S.R. – the tingling-fresh toothpaste for teeth and gums – Gibbs S. R.”, then also “See your dentist regularly, and brush with S.R. – the tingling-fresh toothpaste for teeth and gums. Gibbs S. R.”. Quiz time: Can you remember which one was used for the 1955 transmission?
