Polar.- Rae (John) Narrative of an Expedition to the Shores of the Arctic Sea in 1846 and 1847, first edition, 2 folding engraved maps hand-coloured in outline, without the 10pp. advertisements at end, maps foxed and offset onto facing leaves (including title), large map with short tear at edge (repaired), some other foxing, mostly at beginning and end, ex-library copy with ink stamp to title, verso of maps and one or two other leaves, contemporary half calf, later black roan label, a little rubbed, [Sabin 67428], 8vo, 1850.⁂ Rae was sent by the Hudson's Bay Company to survey the north coast of Canada. The work provides much information on the natives of the area and also lists the fauna and flora. On a later journey he discovered the fate of Sir John Franklin and his expedition.

Studio stamp versoDerry born artist Norah McGuinness won a three year scholarship to study at the Metropolitan School of Art in Dublin at the age of 18, where she was taught by Harry Clarke, Patrick Tuohy and Oswald Reeves before moving to London to study at the Chelsea School of Art. In 1923 she won an RDS medal and the following year exhibited for the first time at the RHA. During these years McGuinness supported herself by designing set and costumes for the Abbey and Peacock theatres and illustrated books. Under the advice of Mainie Jellett she travelled to Paris to study for a period under Andre Lhote.In 1957 she was elected an Honorary member of the RHA but resigned in 1969. A founding member of the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, she served as president from 1944 to 1971. McGuinness exhibited regularly at the Victor Waddington, Dawson and Taylor Galleries in Dublin as well as in Leicster and Mercury Galleries in London, Paris and New York. She also represented Ireland at the 1950 Venice Biennale with Nano Reid. A retrospective of her work was held at Trinity College Dublin in 1968 where she was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1973. Her work can be found in the National Gallery of Ireland, Irish Museum of Modern Art, Hugh Lane Gallery, Ulster Museum and the Crawford Gallery.

Luigi di Montalto e Guglielmo Wendrok sono gli pseudonimi, rispettivamente, di Blaise Pascal e Pierre Nicole. Appeared for the first time in Italian in Venice in 1761 in an edition that was put at Index by decree dated March 3rd, 1762, this satirical work was composed and published anonymously in 1657, on the occasion of the theological polemic between Jesuits and Jansenists . Luigi di Montalto and Guglielmo Wendrok are the pseudonyms, respectively, for Blaise Pascal and Pierre Nicole. The translation is not by Cosimo Brunetti as stated by Melzi, but by the Dominican Ludovico Maria Carrara. Melzi II, 384.
