ROBERT GAVIN RSA (SCOTTISH 1827-1883) THE NEW ORLEANS FLOWER GIRL oil on canvas, studio stamp verso (x 2) 42.5 x 32.5cm (16 3/4 x 12 13/16 inches). note : Robert Gavin toured America in 1868 and then returned to UK by 1871 and exhibited here at that time. Thereafter moved to Tangiers where he was later joined by famed American Orientalist Edwin Lord Weekes. They both worked together and travelled extensively throughout Morocco. Gavin visited New Orleans in the late 1860s and this work dates from that period. It is extremely rare to find such a positive image of an African-American so soon after the end of the American Civil War and the Abolition of Slavery by the 13th Amendment (both in 1865). More usually images were of women picking cotton or shoe shine-boys and as such this image of a beautiful, happy girl would have been significantly controversial at the time it was painted.
