†Items relating to Eduard Knapp, former Gebirgsjager Feldwebel and Heeresgebirgsfuhrer, who served on the Karelian front, and which were given by him to the vendor, a relative by marriage: M42 steel helmet, with textured dark grey finish and no decals, with original leather lining and chinstrap, the inside of the crown with illegible stamp (age wear to the lining); leather belt with aluminium buckle, dated 1937; Gebirgsjager canvas rucksack with leather straps; unmarked Infantry Assault badge in silver (slightly worn); Tyrolean bronze and enamel shooting award, 1939; edelweiss cloth sleeve insignia; and 2 edelweiss metal cap insignia. A heavy early 19th century pioneer axe, possibly French, blade 8” with stamp (unclear) on one side, flattened octagonal section socket and slightly swollen octagonal section peen; the head is fixed to the stout wooden haft by means of a capped loop, the cap fitting the top of the socket, the loop tangs passing inside the socket and being fastened to haft by 3 screw bolts; plain iron shoe with rim to haft, 33½”. †A continental infantry hanger, c 1820, curved shallow fullered blade 25½”, with stamp (unclear) at forte, solid brass hilt with knucklebow, bulbous quillon, prominent pommel cap, plain backstrap, ribbed grip, in its panelled black leather scabbard with brass locket and stud, and chape, with an Austrian FJI sword knot and tassels. A 1796 pattern light cavalry trooper’s sword of The 10th Light Dragoons, curved, shallow fullered blade 32”, marked “Woolley & Co” on backstrap and with crown/1 inspector’s stamp at forte, regulation steel stirrup hilt with langets, plain backstrap with ears to ribbed leather grip, in its steel scabbard marked “Woolley & Co, Birmm” with 2 rings, the top of the quillon with “LD” (faint) and the scabbard clearly marked “X-L-D/ D/ 66”. A 5 shot 54 bore Kerrs patent 2nd model DA percussion revolver, barrel 5¾” with faint traces of London proofs, the frame bearing small “London Armoury” stamp on left side, the right side engraved “Kerr’s Patent 1951”, the back action lock engraved “London Armoury”, with chequered walnut butt and lanyard ring. WO & basically GC (action requires attention, barrel and frame worn with some pitting, area of deeper pitting to cylinder).
A naval shortsword or hanger, c 1850, curved SE blade 17½” with back fuller for two thirds length, marked “Mole” on backstrap with K/4 stamp at forte, brass hilt, shallow S shaped crossguard with prominent disc terminals, langets, forward sloping lion’s head pommel, plain backstrap, ribbed bone grip. John Gray early smooth faced iron lofter, C1870. He was a local blacksmith apprentice to his father in Prestwick. He was an avid golfer and in 1850 for a short time added the work of forging iron golf clubs to the family business. He was one of the pioneer iron club makers and was one of the first to stamp his name on his clubs. In 1851 when Tom Morris went to Prestwick, both Morris and Gray became founding members of the Prestwick Mechanics golf club, later renamed Prestwick St Nicholas Gold club in 1858
