John Gray early smooth faced iron lofter, C1870. He was a local blacksmith apprentice to his father in Prestwick. He was an avid golfer and in 1850 for a short time added the work of forging iron golf clubs to the family business. He was one of the pioneer iron club makers and was one of the first to stamp his name on his clubs. In 1851 when Tom Morris went to Prestwick, both Morris and Gray became founding members of the Prestwick Mechanics golf club, later renamed Prestwick St Nicholas Gold club in 1858
