Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Canada Christmas 1881" Signed upper left. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 15c Merry Christmas Joyeux Noel stamp issue of November 16, 1981. The most widespread, and to children the most delightful, of all festive decorations is the Christmas tree. In nineteenth century Canada, the rapid spread in the Christmas tree's popularity gave rise to a new industry -- ornament making. The first commercial decorations were made of tin, usually in geometric designs with multifaceted surfaces that reflected the candlelight. A variety of candleholders were also contrived to support these traditional sources of light. Popular for many years was a tin clip-on style ornament with a crimped skirt encircling the candle base to catch the dripping wax. Wax figurines, cast by German toymakers, were popular throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century. Starting in the 1840s, glass ornaments, hand-blown in Germany, were imported to Canada. At first, they were only round and thick-walled, but a method was later perfected for making thin, fragile balls. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, colored paper ornaments were common, some printed with as many as twenty different colors. During this same period, embossed cardboard ornaments were made in every conceivable shape and had an astonishing amount of detail. Of course, no Christmas tree in nineteenth century Canada was complete without its edible ornaments such as red apples, cookies, and garlands of popcorn and cranberries. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 17.25 x 15 in. Unframed. (B06192)

Jim Butcher (American, B. 1944) "Santa Claus Painting a Toy" Signed lower left. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally used on the Fleetwood First Day of Issue Maximum Card for the U.S 20c Santa Claus stamp issued October 28, 1983. One of America's most hearwarming traditions during the delightful season of Christmas is the legend of a plump, rosy-cheeked man named Santa Claus. This jolly, grey-haired man...dressed in a warm, red-flannel suit...is said to live at the North Pole, along with an ambitious host of elves. There he and his helpers work all year long, building millions of toys and presents. Then, as Christmas Eve approaches, he takes all the gifts he made and hops into his sleigh, where eight magical reindeer pull him high over the rooftops of homes all over the world. He lands on each roof and springs down the chimney with his bag full of presents. For all the deserving, he leaves wonderful surprises. However, naughty people may awake Christmas morning to find no more than a large lump of coal in their Christmas stocking. Image Size: 14 x 19 in. Overall Size: 21.75 x 27.5 in. Unframed. (B08489)

Lot 412

Ed Little (American, B. 1957) "Santa Claus in His Sleigh" Signed lower left. Original Oil on CanvasBoard. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 29c Santa Claus In His Sleigh stamp issued October 17, 1999. In the early 1800s, America's traditional Christmas time gift-giver was St. Nicholas, a tall, rather stem-looking figure clad in bishop's robes. Brought over to the New World by Dutch settlers, this seasonal character was called Sinterklaas and was aided in his work by a single reindeer. To America's English-speaking children, Sinterklaas became Santa Claus. And as his name changed, Santa's image changed as well. In his Knickerbocker's History of New York, published in 1809, author Washington Irving drew a decidedly different visual picture of Santa Claus. Gone was the stately, patrician look of the original St. Nicholas. In his stead, Irving portrayed a jolly fellow who closely resembled New York's Dutch settlers. Wearing baggy breeches and a broad-billed hat, this pipe-smoking character rode a wagon through the night sky and dropped presents down chimneys as he passed. Clement C. Moore penned his classic Christmas tale in 1822, and in his story Santa's appearance had altered considerably. Clad in a red suit bound with white fur, this chubby Santa slid down chimneys to deliver his toys and drove a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer whose names Moore also immortalized: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! " Image Size: 27.25 x 37.75 in. Overall Size: 30 x 40 in. Unframed. (B13550)

Lot 413

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Christmas - Holly Boughs" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 34c Christmas stamp issued October 23, 1985. Whether he's called Santa Claus or St. Nick, the jolly white-whiskered elf -- dressed in red and bearing presents -- has long been part of Christmas festivities -- including the Toronto Santa Claus Parade honored on Canada's 1985 Christmas stamps. The real St. Nicholas was a fourth century Catholic bishop whose life was devoted to secret works of charity. The Christmas tradition of gift-giving in secrecy sprang from the famous legend concerning his gift of three bags of gold as dowries for three daughters of a poor but devote parishioner. St. Nicholas is considered the patron saint of children, sailors, pawnbrokers and, of course, marriageable maidens. Throughout medieval Europe, tales of St. Nicholas's clandestine generosity sparked Christians of every nation to begin the practice of gift-giving in his honor on December 6, his Feast Day. Long before St. Nicholas became associated with Christmas, the ancient pagan festival of Saturnalia, which subsequently honored Julius Caesar, was mingled with the observance of Christ's birth. Through the years, Holly has embodied the spirit of renewal at Christmas. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B09892)

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Bon Homme Richard" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Bonhomme Richard stamp issued October 10, 1995. The French people idolized America's Benjamin Franklin during the Revolutionary War. A symbol of liberty and a learned Renaissance man, this homespun-yet-brilliant American was a household word in Paris. Thus when the French donated the vessel Duc de Duras to the fledgling United States, it was refurbished and given a new name -- Bon Homme Richard -- in honor of the French translation of the famous pseudonym Franklin used in writing his popular Poor Richard's Almanac. The Bon Homme Richard was captained by John Paul Jones, and it was aboard this vessel that Jones would achieve his most notable success. On September 23, 1779, the Bon Homme Richard was engaged in battle by the formidable British frigate Serapis. When, early in the fight, the British captain demanded his surrender, Jones responded with the immortal words: "I have not yet begun to fight." Three hours later, the Serapis lowered its flag in submission to the courage and valor of the American crew. Unfortunately the Bon Homme Richard had been so seriously damaged that it shortly thereafter succumbed to a watery grave. Jones and his men sailed the Serapis and another captured British warship to safe haven in the Netherlands. He was later made a chevalier of France by King Louis XVI. Legendary maritime artist Charles Lundgren has captured the Bon Homme Richard under full sail in this exquisite painting. Image Size: 25 x 26 in. Overall Framed Size: 33.25 x 34.5 in. Framed behind plexi-glass. (B06169)

Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "British Man-of-War HMS Serpent" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 52c British Man-of-War HMS Serpent stamp and First Day Cover issued October 14, 1993. Designed by William Symonds, the HMS Serpent was built at the Deptford Yard in England in 1832. A brig-rigged sloop (an historic rating in the Royal Navy) the Serpent extended just over 102 feet in length and displaced 432 tons. A huge vessel, she normally required a crew of over 100 men. Twenty years after her christening, the vessel was assigned to the Pacific to ascertain the fate of the lost whaling ship Waverly. Under the command of Captain L.U. Hammet, the Serpent spent four days in January of 1853 visiting such islands as Rognerik, Wotho, Kwajalein and Lae. On some islands, the ship was met by friendly natives who traded with the crew, while other islands greeted the Serpent with resistance, proving the need for her 16 cannons. Image Size: 16 x 20 in. Overall Size: 16 x 20 in. Unframed. (B14491)

Keith Reynolds (American, B. 1929) "British Transport Scarborough" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Canvas Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Republic of the Marshall Islands 75c British Transport Scarborough stamp and First Day Cover issued October 14, 1993. Built in 1782, the British transport ship Scarborough was a two-deck, three-masted craft usually rigged as a bark. Originally owned by a family of English merchants, the Scarborough measured just over 111 feet in height and was unusually wide of beam at 30 feet. In June of 1788, this impressive vessel set sail for Canton, China. Under the command of Captain William Marshall, the Scarborough arrived on June 25 at a collections of islands which were later named for Marshall. Reportedly, 25 of the island's residents welcomed the visitors, greeting the grand ship with chants and boarding it as they sang. The Scarborough lingered in the beautiful Marshall Islands for almost a week, visiting such picturesque spots as Majuro, Arno, Maloelap, Erikub and Wotje. Image Size: 16 x 20 in. Overall Size: 16 x 20 in. Unframed. (B14493)

Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "Tovarisch" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the USSR 15k Tovarisch stamp issued September 18, 1981. Through the ages, man with his ingenuity and his courage has striven to fashion new and better sailing ships in order to conquer the vast unknowns of the sea. The majestic Tovarisch is in itself one of the finest tributes ever to man's centuries-old shipbuilding achievements. This sail-clad beauty, with long, graceful lines and three tall masts, was built in 1933 in Hamburg, Germany by Blahm and Voss as a training vessel for the German Navy. A heavily canvassed bark of 226 feet and 1,309 tons, she was christened the Gorch Fock and designed to reach and maintain speeds of up to 16 knots with over 6,100 square feet of sail. At the close of World War II she was sunk by Nazi Germany near Swinemunde; though shortly thereafter, she was raised and claimed as war reparation by the Soviet Union. In 1951 after extensive repairs and refitting, she resumed her voyages on the high seas, only this time with future Soviet officers on board and with a new name ... the Tovarisch(Russian for "Comrade"). Many of today's Soviet sea captains began as fledgling cadets aboard this famous sailing ship. Thus, in keeping with grand tradition, the mighty Tovarisch continues to ply the waves and train new generations of young cadets in the ways of the sea for the Soviet Merchant Marine. Charles J Lundgren (New York, Connecticut, 1911 - 1988) "La Grande Hermine Sailing Ship" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Masonite. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 20c Roanoke Voyages stamp issued July 13, 1984. On the morning of May 19, 1535, the first rays of sunlight to creep over the La Grande Hermine. Below, on the decks of "the big weasel," Jacques Cartier and his crew busily readied for the long voyage across the Atlantic. Charged by King Francis I of France to explore the region of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Jacques Cartier was experienced and prepared for this trip, for a year before he had voyaged to Canada and explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence. La Grande Hermine, accompanied by two other ships and weathering foggy seas, took over a month and a half to cross the Atlantic. Reaching the New World at the coast of Labrador, Cartier sailed south, through the Strait of Belle Isle between Newfoundland and the continent, and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Then he turned the La Grande Hermine west and started up the St. Lawrence River. Following the river as far as it would take him, he set up camp for the winter. Cartier named the mountain there Mont Royal, which later came to be known as Montreal. The crew enjoyed the hospitality of the Huron Indians through the harsh Canadian winter. Cartier wrote, "All our beverages froze in their casks. And on board our ships, below the hatches as on deck, lay four fingers' breadth of ice." After the winter, the La Grande Hermine sailed for home. Cartier discovered and explored the St. Lawrence River, made an intelligent estimate of the resources of Canada and became friends with many of the Indian tribes of the area. Paul Calle (1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (B. 1961) "1950s - Drive-In Movies" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 33c Drive-In Movies stamp issued May 26, 1999. With the advent of television in the 1950s, Hollywood was forced to create new ways to make movie-going interesting and exciting. Thus, the 1950s became the decade of the drive-in movie, where Americans could watch their favorite films in the comfort and privacy of their own cars. As soon as the sun set, all makes and models of automobiles lined up side-by-side in long rows to view the latest feature film on huge outdoor screens. Cars parked beside posts with removable speakers that drivers could hang from their car windows. Dating couples and entire families enjoyed this novel and entertaining way to watch movies. Since cars in the 1950s were big and roomy and comfortable, drive-in viewers could relax and not have to endure the sometimes disturbing interruptions of fellow movie goers that occurred at indoor theaters. The 1950s brought the American public a wide variety of films, from science fiction tales like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) and Forbidden Planet (1956), to delightful musicals like Singin' in the Rain (1952) and Brigadoon (1954). Alfred Hitchcock's masterful suspense thrillers kept audiences on the edges of their seats, while outrageous comedies like the "Road" movies, starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, gave viewers lots of laughs. Paul Calle (American, 1928 - 2010) and Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "1930's - Japanese Aggression Arouses World" Signed lower right. Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Republic of the Marshall Islands The 20th Century series 60? Japanese Aggression Arouses World Opinion stamp issued July 15, 1998. In 1931 the world watched with great concern as Japan, eager to expand its empire, invaded and conquered Manchuria -- China's main industrial center. Despite international criticism and sanctions, Japan continued its ruthless quest for new territories throughout the decade. On July 7, 1937, Japanese forces attacked Chinese units near Beijing eventually capturing the cities of Nanjing, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. Nanjing fell on December 13, 1937. Over the next six weeks, soldiers of Japan's Imperial Army committed the infamous "Rape of Nanjing," one of history's worst atrocities, during which an estimated 300,000 Chinese soldiers and civilians were killed -- and some 20,000 women raped. The once beautiful city of Nanjing was also burned and pillaged. Image Size: 10 x 13.5 in. Overall Size: 13.25 x 19.75 in. Unframed. (B16078 / B16079)
