A late Victorian silver patent bosun's call by Emanuel Emanuel, London 1896 A late Victorian silver patent bosun's call by Emanuel Emanuel, London 1896, retailer's stamp E EMANUEL 3 THE HARD PORTSEA , the curved and flared gun plain, the plain keel with rim and engraved HMS ARDENT 1897 below a naval coronet and Henry Farley, PO 1st. from KK , the buoy spherical, 10.5cm (4 1/4in) long, 20g HMS Ardent was a 280 ton destroyer. She was built at Chiswick in 1894 and was sold in 1911. The patent refers to E. Emanuel's patent of 11 April 1896. The boatswain's call has a long history both as a symbol of office and as a practical instrument for conveying orders at sea. Its distinctive shape has remained practically unchanged from medieval times to the present day. The call's shrill whistle can be varied in pitch to convey a variety of information, and can be heard above the sound of wind and sea. Such instruments were private possessions rather than official equipment and silver calls like this one made suitable gifts and presentation pieces.
