A Swedish Navy 12-bolt diving helmet by Siebe Gorman & Co, London, with modifications:, oval side windows with guards, circular face plate, spitcock to lower left and lasing eyes, rear air inlet and comms with American speaker box below the faceplate, the outlet valve has been moved and replaced with a Swedish example, oval plaque to corselet later engraved, the brass brail signed as per title, matching numbers '9305', also stamped to nuts , rim and brails with Swedish military stamp of three crowns, 46cm high * Anthony Pardoe remarks- 'This handmade helmet once belonged to the Swedish Navy, who adapted it by stamping the Swedish Navy Emblem - the 'Three Crowns' - on almost everything; wing nuts, front window rim and the brasses. They evidently did not want anyone to steal it!' * see page 82, vol 1, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.

A 6-bolt Admiralty pattern diving helmet by C E Heinke & Co Ltd, London:, number '309' (matching), circular side windows with screw in guards, circular front window with spitcock lower right and pepper pot outlet behind left hand side window, rear air inlet and comms, lanyard hooks to either side, both rims stamped with Admiralty Board stamp to the rear, the air inlet valve stamped and numbered '428', the corselet with weight posts and plate as per title, 47cm high. * Anthony remarks - The lettering '428 C. E. Heinke' Patent London' is heavily stamped into the air inlet; it appears Heinke took out a patent for this particular valve. This helmet was acquired from a small Museum in Wales many years ago. The number indicates it was probably made in the 1930s. * see pages 86-87, vol 1, 'Diving Helmets and Equipment Through The Ages'.

A SET OF SEVEN REGENCY ROSEWOOD DINING CHAIRS BY GILLOWS, C1820 with caned seat and taped velvet squab cushions, 86cm h, rail stamped HH Of these fine 'Handsome Rosewood Chairs', other examples and variations on the design by Gillows are recorded. Furthermore, the initial stamp HH is clearly that of a journeyman, very likely Henry Holmes who worked at least for part of his career for Gillows, since it is one of the most common such stamps to be found on chairs dating from the first half of the 19th century. This design and the maker's stamp are extensively discussed Stuart (S E) Gillows, Woodbridge 2008, Vol I pp222-3 and Vol II pp244-5; see also Vol I plt 212 for an almost identical set of marked Gillows chairs. ++In good condition with some light cosmetic restoration, ie recaning, the brown velvet cushions slightly faded and stained

A Quarter of a Century's Work for the British Admiralty by the Yarrow Firm, no date, circa 1906, a commemorative presentation album comprising 31 hand-tinted photographs of torpedo boats, colonial river gun boats, boilers, etc., plus 3 gouache and watercolour drawings, one a reproduced picture of an expedition arriving at 'Assouan' aboard Waterlily, an aerial view of the yard at Scotstoun and King Edward VII and party aboard a launch at Cowes in 1906, the photographs and illustration window-mounted in thick card, all approximately 16.5 x 26.5 cm and similar, letterpress pages printed in blue, title printed in gilt on card, ink library stamp to verso, library label and withdrawn stamp to front doublure, some fraying to doublures, all edges gilt, original gilt-decorated green morocco, slightly rubbed and darkened, white ink classification number at foot of spine, oblong folio (32 x 45 cm) Originally based in Poplar, London, Yarrow & Company, Limited, was founded by Alfred Yarrow in 1865. In 1898 the shipyard moved to London Yard, Cubitt Town and it was here that hundreds of steam launches, lake and river vessels, and the Royal Navy's first destroyers were built. Also a builder of boilers, the 'Yarrow boiler' was first used in a torpedo boat in 1887 and later used for a number of applications including the propulsion plant of RMS Queen Mary and LNER Class W1 locomotive. Yarrows outgrew its London site and moved to Scotstoun in the west of Glasgow, in 1906. This album, which has no printing or date details, may well have been produced as a celebration at this time. Upjohn, 1791, title in Persian and English, with woodblock British royal and East India Company coats-of-arms at head, imprint within decorative border, text in Persian in nasta'liq and naskhi type, later pencil annotation throughout, lacking leaves 79 and 80 from the third part, tiny hole to title imprint affecting one letter, tiny marginal wormhole affecting title and first 8 leaves, pp.8-9 of second part cut short and into a couple of words, a couple of other catchwords in second part just trimmed by the binder, leaves 5 and 6 of third part sometime neatly remargined, leaves 119 and 120 in third part mis-foliated as published, last 19 leaves stained and with other lighter staining mainly confined to gutter affecting various gatherings, marbled endpapers, contemporary ownership stamp of Mr Strachey on endpaper, possibly repeated in ink manuscript in Persian below, label of Carberry Tower Library, contemporary half calf, worn, spine and corners crudely repaired with tape, folio (270 x 175mm), together with Bell (Gertrude L.), Poems from the Diran of Hafiz, Heinemann, 1928, original cloth, 8vo First item: Very rare first printed edition of the celebrated Persian lyric poet, who lived 1315-1390. The edition itself was compiled by Abu Taleb Khan Landani (1753-1805/06; administrator at Lucknow and author) based on 12 manuscripts. 'By common consent [Hafez] represents the zenith of Persian lyric poetry. In no other Persian poet can be found such a combination of fertile imagination, polished diction, apt choice of words, and silken melodious expressions' (Enc. Iranica Vol. XI, Fasc. 5, pp. 461-465). This edition was printed in 1200 copies by Aaron Upcott (fl.1785-1800). 'The first printed edition using movable type was commissioned by Richard Johnson of the East India Company [...] In a letter to Johnson prior to its publication, Sir William Jones, the famous orientalist and translator of Hafez, had complimented Johnson on taking up the task: "An impression of your Hafiz will, indeed, be a valuable acquisition to the publick; and I hope some years hence to offer up a copy of it on the tomb of the divine poet near the crystal stream of Rucnabad"' (Enc. Iranica Vol. XI, Fasc. 5, pp. 479-483). Only 7 institutional copies have been traced: BL, Cambridge, Bodleian, Edinburgh, Marburg, Princeton and Chapel Hill. Shaw 186 (not calling for the first part of 15 ll., nor the second part of 5 ll.). (2)

An Hermès off-white leather Kelly bag, 1991, blind stamp U, with gold-plated hardware, leather covered padlock, fob and keys, with detachable shoulder strap, 29cm, 11 1/2in CONDITION REPORT: Some scuffs and light marks to bag commensurate with light use. Exterior leather is a bit grubby and would benefit from cleaning. Small pen mark to inside flap. Interior base is speckled with faint pink marks. Overall bag is quite fresh and good.

An Hermès green courchevel leather Birkin, 1994, blind stamp X, in original box, with gold plated hardware, leather fob with two keys, shopping and dust bag, 33cm, 13in long (qty) CONDITION REPORT: Has been reconditioned to corners of base, leather is rubbed on handles from use, faint small greasemark to front, otherwise exterior is good. Interior shows signs of heavy use around sides and edges where leather is worn. Lacking padlock.

A rare post-war Lanvin couture evening gown, Summer, 1947, large woven label with red date stamp, of black wool crêpe with empire line, lightly boned pale blue sequined ivory rayon bodice, with bow to the back and Watteau-like pleated trained panel, bust 92cm, 36in CONDITION REPORT: Sequins are good, generally intact and appear sparkly. Some sequins have dulled/melted although this is not immediately obvious. Right shoulder strap has a couple of stitches with black thread. Some fading to front of skirt and seam lines/selvedges show where it has been ironed. Horizontal (iron) line across lower left hip, 11cm, and a similar small mark to front bodice. Lower rear skirt has 8cm lighter iron mark and a couple of pinhead sized holes. Interior bodice is very fresh. Very pretty overall.

Dandy Monster Comic 1 (1939). Korky introduces Desperate Dan, Keyhole Kate and all the Dandy characters. This first annual is a 'library' copy and was kept in D C Thomson's main office in Meadowside, Dundee.
