A Regency flame-figured mahogany clothes press by Wilkinson1820-1825, the moulded cornice above a pair of panelled doors enclosing four oak-lined slides, over two short and two long oak-lined drawers, on large bulb feet, stamped: 'WILKINSON, LUDGATE HILL' and '14525', the mounts original, 124cm wide x 53cm deep x 193.5cm high, (48 1/2in wide x 20 1/2in deep x 76in high)Footnotes:Thomas and William Wilkinson were cousins who ran a cabinet making firm at No.'s 9 and 10 Broker's Row in Moorfields, London during the period 1790-1807. They were most renowned for the specialist production of patent tables, and extending dining tables in particular, which in their own words could occupy 'a space considerable smaller than is necessary for the standing of any other dining table now in use'.The Wilkinson partnership technically ceased in 1808 when William left the business in order to take over the firm of Quentin Kay, whose premises were located at 14 Ludgate Hill. At the same time Thomas continued to operate in the same capacity as previously, albeit in charge on his own, until 1828. It is recorded that William Wilkinson stamped his furniture: 'WILKINSON, LUDGATE HILL' (as appears on the offered lot) until 1825, in which year William's sons became partners. From 1825 onwards the stamp was altered to: 'WILKINSON & SONS, 14 LUDGATE HILL'. The business remained at 14 Ludgate Hill until William Wilkinson junior's death in 1855, C. A good white metal diamond and sapphire floral ring, the twin principal round brilliant cut stones each weighing approx 1ct, within a border of nineteen small round brilliant cut diamonds and eight marquise cut sapphires, size M1/2, approx 9.2g, presented in a Boodle & Dunthorne of Liverpool vintage jewellery box. CONDITION REPORT The diamonds are approximately 6.75mm diameter each. Due to the setting, it is impossible to get a depth and also difficult to clean and therefore comment on colour, however the clarity of both major stones is quite good. There are no inclusions with the naked eye and with a loupe there are only small inclusions. There is the most minute of chips to the table of one of the stones, but this is being very critical. Both are well matched and facing up white, as are the other stones. The sapphires are medium to dark blue, the band has a stamp inscribed 'Cecil' and an indistinct number to the side of this. A Wedgwood blue jasper ware cheese dish and cover decorated with putti within oak leaf and acorn borders, impressed stamp to base, height 22cm. CONDITION REPORT The finial from the knop is missing, there is crazing throughout the white applied detail, as to be expected. There is a star-form fine crack to the base.

Plaques to the front have been resecured, which can be seen by the fresher pins to the underside. Dirt and dust to the recesses.

Unusual for a table to tilt with drawers and supporting runners to the underside have been added to support to the top and fit the pedestal base.Platform with ink stamp to top of pedestal base. See additional images on www.bellmans.co.uk. Repaired break to the top of one splayed leg with plugged repair, another leg also probably well repaired. The top faded, with wear and scuffs overall, commensurate with use and age. Later leather, although it has been there for some time. Some veneers chips and cracks to the top. One key present.
