AN EARLY SILVER GEORG JENSEN AMETHYST NECKLACE stamped with the pattern number 4, with the Georg Jensen 'GJ in a box' makers stamp circa 1933-44. Length 41.5cm, weight 68.8gms Condition Report: Light tarnish throughout, clasp works well. Could do with a general clean appears dirty in the recesses. Amethysts are not of top quality, one has a surface reaching inclusion, or it might be a small chip, others have white inclusions and eye visible banding. Nice early makers marks.

A veteran of the Civil War, he played a prominent role as a Republican politician in the Reconstruction and enjoyed a controversial yet influential political career. Despite losing his Senate seat, he remained active in the Republican National Committee and helped William McKinley in his successful presidential nomination in 1896. He was rewarded with the Ambassadorship of Mexico in 1897, a post he continued to hold under McKinley's successor Theodore Roosevelt. In 1905 he brought Roosevelt to Arkansas, only the second President to visit the State whilst in office. After his retirement he continued to be a powerful influence in the party and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery (see encyclopediaofarkansas.net). Correspondence from Clayton to Roosevelt from this period is held in the Roosevelt Papers at the Library of Congress. A glowing article in a contemporary in-house magazine for Esso describes it as '...a most efficient Filling Station, and also a structure emphasising a high degree of taste in design and general appearance... a boon to the boating fraternity...'. Lot 1361

EDWARD VII: (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Emperor of India 1901-10. The original gilded metal prototype design (Pattern No. 3465) of the Royal Cipher and Crown of King Edward VII to be used by the newly crowned monarch in his capacity as Emperor of India and approved by him personally. The attractive design, featuring the entwining initials E R I [Edward Rex Imperator] with the Royal crown above, was made by the Birmingham company of Bent & Parker and is affixed to the original small 8vo card upon which it was presented to King Edward VII for his approval. The King has signed ('Appd. ER') the card in the upper left corner to indicate his approval of the design which was subsequently used on all manner of official documents in India in recognition of the King becoming Emperor of India in 1901. King Edward VII has also added the date, 13th June 1901, in his hand to the card, less than six months after becoming Emperor of India. The verso of the card bears the manufacturers ink name and an official red wax seal as well as the oval ink stamp of the India Store Depot, dated 15th June 1901, just two days after the King approved the Cipher. Also affixed to the card is the original partially printed India Store Depot label from Belvedere Road, Lambeth, London, completed by the Superintendent on 17th June 1901 and stating 'Badge, metal, Imperial Cypher with Crown as approved by H.M. the King….' and further marked in red ink 'Not to be lost'. A truly unique and historical Royal Cipher directly relating to King Edward VII's time as Emperor of India. A scarce vintage signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph of Ure seated in a glamorous half-length pose wearing a pair of long white gloves. Photograph by Ted Reed and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed in blue ink across a light area of the image, 'To Barbara - with gratefull (sic) thanks for all your help & encouragement, Mary Ure'. Signed photographs of Ure are scarce as a result of her untimely death at the age of 42. VG

Head of the government of the Russian Republic 1917-18, of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic 1918-24, and of the Soviet Union 1922-24. Very rare T.L.S., `V. Ulyanov, (Lenin)´, in Cyrillic, Kremlin, Moscow, 19th December 1919, to Comrade Artemic B. Khalatov, in Cyrillic. Bearing to the upper left corner a rubber stamp of the "Russian Socialist Federation Republic Council of the People´s Commissar Moscow, Kremlin. Lenin, in his capacity as Chairman of the Worker´s and peasant´s Defense Council, wishes to his correspondent, member of the Board of the Provision´s Committee, a prompt recovery and return to work, stating `It is ordered that you stay in the sanatorium for one month, until you have reached full recovery, so that you can accept a challenging position that will be assigned to you by that time.´ Marked no. 572/6. Signed in bold black ink at the base by Lenin, partially over a purple ink Russian stamp in Cyrillic. Small flattened vertical fold. Otherwise VG    Artemic Bagratovich Khalatov (1894-1937) Bolshevik revolutionary and Soviet politician who served as the Director of the Soviet Union's State Publishing House, also known as Gosizdat, from 1927 to 1932. In 1919, Khalatov became a member of the People's Commissariat for Food and briefly was placed in charge of overseeing the main supply department of the Red Army. He was later executed during the Great Purge of 1937, led by Joseph Stalin.The present letter is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued and signed by John Reznikoff of University Archives.

DE VALERA EAMON: (1882-1975) Taoiseach of Ireland 1932-37 (as President of the Executive Council), 1937-48, 1951-54 & 1957-59. President of Ireland 1959-73. An unusual vintage signed 9.5 x 7.5 photograph by De Valera, the image depicting the President alongside three generations of his family, two of which have also signed the photograph, comprising his son Eamon de Valera Jr. (1913-1986, Irish obstetrician and gynaecologist), his grandson Eamon de Valera (b.1944) and, being held in his arms, one of his three great grandchildren, either Sinead (b.1968), Eamon (b.1971) or Etain (b.1973). Photograph by the Lensmen press agency of Dublin and bearing their credit stamp to the verso. Signed by all three men individually in white fountain pen inks with their names alone to the image. CESPEDES DEL CASTILLO CARLOS MANUEL: (1819-1874) Cuban Revolutionary. Known as the ''Father of the Motherland'', Cespedes is considered a Cuban hero who freed slaves and leaded the declaration of Cuban Independence in 1868. An attractive signed printed document, one page, folio, Bayamo, 27th December 1868, in Spanish. The document being a decree is entitled ''Slavery Conditioned Abolition Decree - Carlos Manuel de Cespedes - Captain-General of the Liberator Army of Cuba and Leader of the Provisional Government'', and bears a very attractive and large vignette to the heading. The decree contains nine articles, and starts stating `The Cuban Revolution, proclaiming the independence of the Homeland and with it all freedoms, cannot accept the inconsistency of restricting it to only one part of the country´s population. A free Cuba is incompatible with a proslavery Cuba..´ further saying in its first article `All slaves are declared free..´. Boldly signed by Cespedes at the base of the document `C. M de Cespedes´. Bearing a large blind embossed seal to the head and an ink stamp of the ''Ilustre Ayuntamiento Libre de Bayamo'' (“ Illustrious Free Townhall of Bayamo”) at the base. The document grants freedom to `Tomas, Labourer, 23 years old, black,..´ Overall age wear and toning, with edges trimmed. Partially repaired to the verso. F to G

GOMEZ MAXIMO: (1836-1905) Maximo Gomez y Baez. Dominican General, and prominent figure in Cuba´s Ten Years´ War against Spain 1868-78. Military Commander in Cuba´s War of Independence 1895-98. Gomez is remembered for his violent and unscrupulous methods, scorched-earth policy, dynamiting passenger trains, torching Spanish loyalists´ properties and plantations, and torturing and killing Spanish soldiers and sympathizers. Rare L.S., `M. Gomez´, one page, 4to, Headquarters at Songorrongo, Cuba, 30th June 1895, in Spanish. Signed by Mario Gomez in his capacity as “General en Jefe” (”Chief General”) during the Cuban war of Independence, which only started four months before the present letter was signed. Also signed by SALVADOR CISNEROS BETANCOURT (1828-1914) Marquis of Santa Lucia. President of the republic of Cuba 1873-75. The written document bears the heading “Republic of Cuba - Liberation army - Third Corps - Camaguey”, and is the appointment of Antonio Lopez as Sargent of the Liberation Army for his services in favour of the Independence of Cuba. With an official ink stamp to the verso. Overall age wear and staining. Left edge trimmed. F

GUEVARA CHE: (1928-1967) Argentine Marxist Revolutionary & Guerrilla leader, a major figure in the Cuban Revolution. D.S., `Che´, one page, oblong 8 x 4.5 clipped page, n.p. [Cuba], 21st June 1959, in Spanish. The clipped piece bears an ink stamp to the heading, being the acknowledgement of the document received, stating after the date that `On this day, I notified the present document to the undersigning, having read it in full and giving him a copy signed by me, I attest so..´, Stating beneath in red ink “Received”, signed below by Che Guevara in his typical small writing. Beneath his signature and in typed letters “Comandante Ernesto Che Guevara”. Matted in black above a 4 x 3 photograph of Che Guevara, unsigned, on the occasion of the opening of a pencils factory in 1964, to an overall size of 12 x 12 (30cm x 30cm). Large crease crossing from up to down the page, not affecting the signature, and small holes due to former traces to the left edge. F to G

A scarce, early vintage signed postcard photograph of Bernstein in a profile head and shoulders pose at Teatro alla Scala in Milan and bearing the opera house's credit stamp to the verso. Signed by Bernstein in blue ink with his name alone to the lower white border. The signature is a little light in places, although reasonably legible. An historic signed image. VG  In 1953 Bernstein became the first American conductor to appear at La Scala, conducting Maria Callas in Cherubini's Medea, directed by Luchino Visconti.

RODIN AUGUSTE: (1840-1917) French Sculptor. D.S. twice, Augustin Rodin and Aug. Rodin, one page, oblong 8vo, on the 182 Rue de l´Université printed stationery, 3rd June 1909, in French. The manuscript document, entirely in Rodin´s hand, is a receipt for the sum of 23,000 francs received from Mr. Pulitzer as the final payment for one marble bust and a bronze bust. Rodin´s second signature and date are penned across an official French revenue stamp neatly affixed to the document. With blank integral leaf. SPRANGER EDUARD: (1882-1963) German Philosopher. Best known for his contribution to personality theory in his book Lebensformen ("Types of Men"), 1914. An excellent and cleanly written A.L.S., `Eduard Spranger´, one page, 4to, Berlin, 26th March 1943, to Ulrich von Hassell, in German. The letter bears to the upper right corner a printed stamp with the author´s name and address. Spranger has recently received Hassell´s work related to European politics and states in part `..It concerned me a lot if you could contact now with your wounded son. I strongly hope that you are about to receive reassuring good news..´ Folded. VG    Ulrich von Hassell (1881-1944) German Diplomat. Son in law to Grand Admiral von Tirpitz. Hassell was a member of the German Resistance and participated in the conspiracy to kill Hitler in July 1944, and after failing and being arrested was hanged in September 1944. Several of his works were published after his death including The Von Hassell Diaries.

On his son’s stammer, ‘quite a pitiful spectacle demanding immediate attention’ DICKENS CHARLES: (1812-1870) English Novelist. A good A.L.S., Charles Dickens, with paraph, one page, 8vo, Tavistock House, [London], 30th May 1853, to the Reverend E[dward] Trimmer. Dickens writes, in full, 'I find, to my great vexation and distress, that Frank stammers so horribly in his speech as to be quite a pitiful spectacle demanding immediate attention. I therefore retain him at home, to endeavour to get him cured'. With a collector's heraldic stamp to the upper right corner and neatly laid down at the left edge, otherwise VG    Reverend Edward Trimmer (1800-1857) English military coach. Francis Dickens (1844-1886) Third son of Charles Dickens who initially went to school in Germany to train to become a doctor although gave up this ambition and obtained a commission in the Bengal Mounted Police and served in India for seven years.

A.L.S., `M´, signed with his initial, one page, to a 4.5 x 3.5 oblong card, Charlottenburg, 4th May 1883, to an unidentified correspondent, in Italian. The card bears to the upper left corner an ink stamp stating “Theodor Mommsen - Charlottenburg bei Berlin, Marchstrasse 6”. Mommsen, in his usual small writing, asks his correspondent for reproductions from Italy, telling him that even if he has to copy them from books. G to VG

QUASIMODO SALVATORE: (1901-1968) Italian Novelist and Poet. Nobel Prize in Literature in 1959. The Sicilian writer is widely considered one of the foremost Italian poets of the 20th century. A good A.L.S., `Quasimodo´, one page, folio, Milan, 11th February 1943, to Bonetti, in Italian. A cleanly written letter, Quasimodo stating `Dear Bonetti, thank you. A book about my work will soon be issued, edited by Cedam from Padova; the author is Mario Stefanilo. A useful volume for consultation for your work is Lirici nuovi by Luciano Anceschi…´, further and before concluding states `For 1943 I do not prepare anything.´ With a small partial trace of a purple ink stamp at the base, not affecting the text or signature. HILL A. V.: (1886-1977) British physiologist, one of the founders of the diverse disciplines of biophysics and operations research. Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine, 1922. T.L.S., A. V. Hill, one page, 4to, Burlington House, London, 15th May 1942, to the Organising Secretary of the British Soviet Alliance Anniversary, on the printed stationery of The Royal Society. Hill thanks his correspondent for their letter and remarks 'I regard sound Anglo-Soviet relations as of very great importance both now and for the future and I welcome the fact that the first anniversary of the military alliance between Britain and the Soviet Union is to be celebrated appropriately' although continues 'I gather, however, from the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, that the word 'sponsor' means either one who answers for an infant at its baptism or one who enters into an engagement on behalf of another. It would be misleading to allow my name to appear in a list of names in either of these capacities'. A letter of good content dating from World War II. With a received rubber stamp (dated 16th May 1942) to the lower right corner and a few small pinholes to the upper left corner, none affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG

BRANLY EDOUARD: (1844-1940) French inventor & physicist, primarily known for his early involvement in wireless telegraphy. A.L.S., E. Branly, one page, 8vo, n.p., 23rd January 1929, to an unidentified correspondent, in French. Branly informs his correspondent that 'I sent my acceptation on the date indicated' and further adds 'I have just found the mislaid paper; I am placing my signature on it. This will be preferable for uniformity'. Together with an unrelated autograph envelope, unsigned, addressed in Branly's hand to Monsieur Claude, an architect in Paris and post marked 14th February 1925. The letter is a little irregularly torn to the left edge, not affecting the text or signature, and the envelope has had the original postage stamp torn away. G to VG, 2

DROVETTI BERNARDINO: (1776-1852) Italian-born French Diplomat, Politician, Archaeologist and antiquities collector. Drovetti is best-remembered for his acquisition of the Turin Royal Canon and for his Egyptian discoveries. He remains a controversial figure for his unscrupulous behaviour in his conduct towards his discoveries in Egypt. Rare A.L.S., `Drovetti´, with flourish, one page, 4to, Toulon, 8th May 1803, to Monsieur Balthalon in Marseille, in French. At the time of the present letter Drovetti had been recently appointed by Napoleon as French Consul-general of Egypt and was about to embark at Toulon to Alexandria, stating in part `..we will embark tomorrow,.. as soon as the wind will take a favourable direction for our crossing…´, further referring to various matters `..it seems to me difficult that you could send to me at the same time the small uniform I was asking you, I will then receive the whole on the same occasion, and if possible at all, the pendulum… I would kindly ask you to join to that junk an Italian & French dictionary of the Marseille edition…´ With address leaf in his hand, with an ink stamp above of Toulon. Paper with a Montgolfier Annonay watermark. Very small overall minor creasing, otherwise VG    Drovetti obtained the French nationality and joined the French Grande Armée. As an official, during the French campaign in Egypt 1798-99, he distinguished himself by saving the life of Napoleon´s Marshal Joachim Murat. He later became the French Consul-General of Egypt during both the Empire until 1814 and the Bourbon Restoration 1820-29.

CARRIER JEAN BAPTISTE: (1756-1794) French Revolutionary and member of the Convention. Well-remembered for his infamous Drownings at Nantes (`Noyades de Nantes´). After the fall of Robespierre, Carrier was tried for war crimes, sentenced to death and guillotined. Rare multiple L.S., Carrier, one page, 4to, n.p., [Paris], n.d. [1794], in French. The letter is written and also signed by Louis Turreau de Linieres, and by Albert Ruelle, all members of the National Convention, and states in part `We, deputies, declare and undersign that during our stay at the Vendée we have recognized citizen La Chevardiere, former vice-President of the Paris department, as a very good patriot, and we have not found any thing which would identify him with opposing the Republican government..´, further referring to additional reports on La Chevardiere´s patriotic behaviour. The document bears to the heading a red ink stamp. Small overall age wear and foxing stains, with slightly uneven edges. G

GOUVION SAINT-CYR LAURENT DE: (1764-1830) Marshal of France, Marquis de Gouvion Saint-Cyr. L.S., `Le M.al Gouvion St Cyr´, two pages, folio, Paris, 12th February 1819, on the Ministry of War printed stationery, to Baron Dubreton, Lieutenant General and Commandant of the 5th military division, in French. Gouvion refers to his predecessor´s order to all Lieutenant Generals of the military divisions, indicating that it was forbidden to add anything to the published proclamations unless it was authorized by the war ministry, and further states in part `The King has been informed that several officers or chiefs of corps have allowed themselves to publish daily orders which were not related to the service…´ Gouvion Saint-Cyr further reports on the King´s orders related to these proclamations. The letter bears a very small ink collection stamp at the base. VG

[WORLD WAR II]: ALEXANDER HAROLD (1891-1969) British Field Marshal of World War II & CLARK MARK W. (1896-1984) American Lieutenant General of World War II. A World War II date national flag of the United Kingdom (measuring 113 x 60”), the Union Jack consisting of the red cross of Saint George (patron saint of England), edged in white, superimposed on the Cross of Saint Patrick (patron saint of Ireland), which are superimposed on the Saltire of Saint Andrew (patron saint of Scotland), manufactured by T. C. Hayward & Co. Ltd and bearing their stamp to the hoist, with two off-white cloth panels, each measuring approximately 11 x 2.5”, neatly stitched alongside each other to the flag, the first signed by Harold Alexander, 'H. R. Alexander, General, C in C Allied Armies in Italy, 1944', and the second by Mark W. Clark, with his name alone. A contemporary clear plastic protective covering has been neatly stitched over each of the panels. Accompanied by a partially printed oblong 4to card stating that the flag bears the signatures of Alexander and Clark and that it was presented to the United Nations Senior Youth Federation and that 'to the gracious courtesy of the distinguished donor of this historic and priceless gift must ever be extended the deep and sincere gratitude and thanks of all'. [ETHIOPIA]: A World War II date national flag of Ethiopia (measuring 108 x 53”) of green, gold and red tricolour, manufactured by T. C. Hayward & Co. Ltd and bearing their stamp, along with that of Ethiopia, to the hoist, signed in black ink to the centre by Belata Ayela Gabre, 'From the Ethiopian Minister in London, Ayela Gabre', who had been appointed in September 1942. Accompanied by a printed compliments slip from the Imperial Ethiopian Legation at Prince's Gate, London, bearing a typed note and address of the Grimsby and District United Youth Movement, founding the United Nations Youth Federation, dated 18th August 1944. [HITLER ADOLF]: (1889-1945) Fuhrer of the Third Reich 1933-45. [MUNOZ GRANDES AGUSTIN]: (1896-1970) Spanish General who fought as an officer of the Wehrmacht during World War II and was commander of the Blue Division 1941-42. Knight's Cross winner with Oak Leaves. Munoz Grandes later served as Deputy Prime Minister of Spain (1962-67) under Francisco Franco. An original telegram (received copy) sent by Agustin Munoz Grandes, one page, 4to, n.p., 6th January 1942, to the Fuhrer and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, in German. The partially printed telegram is marked as having been received at 03.35 hours on the 7th January at Hitler's headquarters and the text states, in full, 'By the high award of the Iron Cross 1st Class, Your Excellency has honoured not only me personally but the courage of my whole division. I ask Your Excellency to be assured that no sacrifice is too great for the final victory of our united armed forces. We know what we are fighting for and since the taking of the oath at Grafenwohr, we are following Your Excellency's commands without flinching'. The telegram is initialled in bold pencil by Major Gerhard Engel to the right corner signifying receipt by the Armed Forces Adjutants office attached to the Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor. Together with a contemporary typed copy of the telegram prepared on the Fuhrer Typewriter for submission to Hitler, one page, 4to, n.p., 7th January 1942, in German. With an official stamp at the head indicating that it was submitted to Hitler on the 7th January and bearing the bold pencil initials of both Karl-Jesko von Puttkamer and Rudolf Schmundt. An interesting pair of documents with good association and featuring the initialled signatures of three of Hitler's adjutants. Two file holes to the left edge of each document and with some small areas of paper loss and tears to the edges (largely to the original received copy of the telegram). G to about VG, 2     Gerhard Engel (1906-1976) German General of World War II, Knight's Cross winner with Oak Leaves. Adjutant to Adolf Hitler 1941-43. Karl-Jesko von Puttkamer (1900-1981) German Admiral of World War II, Naval Adjutant to Adolf Hitler 1939-45. Rudolf Schmundt (1896-1944) German Chief of the German Army Personnel Office 1942-44, Adjutant to Adolf Hitler 1938-44. Schmundt died from injuries sustained in the 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler. Grafenwohr is some thirty miles southeast of Bayreuth. Hitler instituted the custom whereby all units of the armed forces swore a personal oath to him, and it can be assumed from the present telegram that the Spanish 'Blue Division' went through this ceremony at the place in question.

[BLUCHER GEBHARD LEBERECHT VON]: (1742-1819) Prussian Field Marshal who earned his greatest recognition after leading his army against Napoleon I at the Battle of the Nations at Leipzig in 1813 and the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. An unusual, interesting small group of T.Ls.S. and telegrams comprising, in chronological order, a T.L.S. by Major Steifensand, one page, 4to, Schwuchow, near Stolp, Pomerania, 22nd November 1942, to the Adjutants Office of the Fuhrer and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Fuhrer's Headquarters, on the printed stationery of the Association of the officers of the 5th (Pomeranian) Count Blucher von Wahlstatt Hussar Regiment, in German, sending notice of a 'modest ceremony, in keeping with the times' that will take place on 16th December, the 200th anniversary of the birth of Count Blucher, 'at the monument to this great hero of the War of Liberation', advising of the text of a telegram intended to be sent to Adolf Hitler on the day, and concluding 'If the Fuhrer and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces should honour the former Blucher Hussars with a reply - which would fill us all with great joy and deep gratitude - I would respectfully request that it should be sent to me at the above address'; a carbon copied T.L.S. by Karl-Jesko von Puttkamer, with his initials in bold indelible pencil, one page, 4to. Fuhrer's Headquarters, 6th December 1942, to Major Steifensand, in German, informing him that the Fuhrer has been informed of his letter of 22nd November and 'enclosing the Fuhrer's telegram of reply (no longer present) so that you will be in a position to make its contents known at the ceremony', further remarking 'In addition, the Fuhrer will arrange for a wreath to be laid on the grave of Count Blucher'; a partially printed telegram (received copy) completed in typescript from Major Steifensand, one page, 4to, Stolp (Pomerania), received at the Main Telegraph Office, Berlin, 16th December 1942, to the Fuhrer, in German, stating, in full, 'The former members of the Blucher Hussars, gathered today in their old garrison town of Stolp, on the 200th anniversary of the birth of Count Blucher von Wahlstatt, their ever-to-be remembered commander, think in gratitude and loyalty of their Fuhrer, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, and express the hope that the name of this immortal hero of the War of Liberation might again be carried by a unit in today's army', with an official adjutant's stamp initialled by von Puttkamer; a carbon copied typed draft of the text of Hitler's telegram of reply, prepared on the Fuhrer typewriter for submission to Hitler for his approval, one page, 4to, Headquarters, 16th December 1942, in German, stating, in full, 'I am grateful to the former members of the Blucher Hussars assembled in Stolp on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Field Marshal Count Blucher for their expression of loyalty. Throughout the German army in the current war too our battle cry remains that of the War of Liberation - 'Forwards!''. File holes to the left edge of each of the documents and most with neatly clipped upper right corners and other minor faults. G to about VG, 4    Karl-Jesko von Puttkamer (1900-1981) German Admiral of World War II, Naval Adjutant to Adolf Hitler 1939-45. It is interesting to note that, in his telegram, Hitler avoids any direct reply to the request that the name of Blucher should be given to a unit of the existing German army. Perhaps this was because he had no interest in reviving memories of the old aristocratic connections of the army.

HILDEBRANDT RICHARD: (1897-1952) German SS-Obergruppenfuhrer of World War II, head of the SS Race and Settlement Main Office 1943-45. Fountain pen ink signature ('Hildebrandt'), with typed rank above, on an oblong 12mo piece evidently clipped from a document and with an official circular purple ink stamp (only very slightly affecting the signature). Lightly mounted to the base of an A4 sheet of paper featuring a reproduction image of Hildebrandt in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform. VG

HOFMANN OTTO: (1896-1982) German SS functionary of World War II who served as head of the SS Race and Settlement Main Office 1940-43 and was present at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942 for the so-called 'Final Solution to the Jewish Question'. Ink signature, with rank etc. alongside and beneath, on an oblong 12mo piece evidently neatly clipped from an official document and with a circular purple stamp to the left edge. Lightly mounted to the base of an A4 sheet of paper featuring a reproduction image of Hofmann in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform. VG

EICKE THEODOR: (1892-1943) German SS functionary, one of the key figures in the development of Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust serving as the second commandant of Dachau concentration camp 1933-34. Eicke was also one of the executioners of SA Chief Ernst Rohm during the Night of the Long Knives purge. Knight's Cross winner with Oakleaves. Bold purple indelible pencil signature ('Eicke'), with typed rank beneath, on an oblong 12mo piece evidently clipped from the conclusion of a document and with an official circular stamp to the left edge featuring the Nazi eagle and swastika. Lightly mounted to the base of an A4 sheet of paper featuring a reproduction image of Eicke in a head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform and Knight's Cross. VG

[HOLOCAUST]: WIESENTHAL SIMON (1908-2005) Jewish Austrian Holocaust survivor and Nazi hunter. A brief T.L.S., Simon Wiesenthal, one page, 4to, Vienna, 24th June 1981, to Mihran B. Hagopian, on the printed stationery of the Dokumentationszentrum. Wiesental writes, in full, 'I am again in the States between July 10th and 16th. Please prepare something for me'. Together with Elie Wiesel (1928-2016) Romanian-born American writer and Holocaust survivor, Nobel Peace prize winner, 1986. Signed and inscribed commemorative cover issued in honour of Raoul Wallenberg and featuring an Israeli postage stamp with his portrait. Post marked 7th June 1983. Signed by Wiesel in black ink to a clear area of the cover. Accompanied by an associated presentation folder. VG, 2

FRANCIS II: (1768-1835) Holy Roman Emperor 1792-1806 and, as Francis I, the first Emperor of Austria 1804-35. L.S., Franz, one page, folio, Vienna, 9th April 1801, in German. The letter announces the birth of the Emperor's daughter and confirms that she has been named 'Carolina, Ferdinanda, Theresia, Josepha, Demetria'. With integral address leaf (the address panel neatly excised) and with a red wax seal affixed. With the small black ink stamp of a collector at the base. VG    Archduchess Marie Caroline of Austria (1801-1832) had been born in Vienna on 7th April 1801 and became Crown Princess of Saxony upon her marriage to Frederick Augustus, Crown Prince of Saxony, in October 1819. The Crown Princess died at the young age of 31 after suffering an epileptic attack on 22nd May 1832 at Pillnitz Castle near Dresden.
