Historia Societatis Iesu, Coloniae Agrippinae, sumptibus Antonii Hierat, 1615, woodcut device on the title-page, which is neatly restored at the head and bears an ink ownership inscription and indelible lib. stamp, some minor marginal worming, text heavily browned throughout, contemp. blind-tooled pigskin over wooden boards, soiled, formerly with clasps, small 4to. A World War I archive to Lt Bertram Morris Barnes, 9th Manchester Regiment, killed in action 25th April 1917, France comprising photograph, brown service belt as worn in photograph, field service pocket book with Manchester Regiment Orderly Room stamp, certificate of discharge dated 5/8/15, certificate for Class of Instruction for Field Duties as a Platoon Commander 1915 and an amusing handwritten note "advertisements", two official telegrams to his next-of-kin from Buckingham Palace and the War Department informing them of his death, 17th May 1917, two poignant letters from the Manchester Regiment HQ giving details of his death in a trench attack and his burial etc
A violin by Giovanni Gaida, London 1933. The wood with good red-brown varnish and undamaged. Bears Gaida's brand stamp and label. Length of Back: 7.8 15/16 in. Stop length: 12 7/8 in, with original leather case. * See William Henley "Universal Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers", page 29. Born at Bollengo (Near Ivrea) in 1862 settled in London in 1904 working for the Stainer Manufacturing Co. and for many years for F. W. Chanot, established his own workshop at Castle Street, Long Acre, 1925. Tonal quality rather remarkable for its velvety softness and eveness.
St. Lucia 1881 Postal Fiscal Stamp 'SHILLING STAMP', orange, with the surcharge variety 'SHILDING' for 'SHILLING' officially corrected with the use of red ink. Tied by the St. Lucia code 'C' date-stamp of 11 December 1896 on a small envelope registered to Barbados. Oval-framed 'R', manuscript reference number '7559' and Barbados arrival date-stamp on the reverse. Some envelope creasing but good appearance and rare. When purchased from Stanley Gibbons Ltd., it was stated that only two examples had been recorded. Stanley Gibbons No. F4b variety.
Great Britain Used Abroad 1868 an outer wrapper from Tampico in Mexico to Vera Cruz, franked with a horizontal strip of 4 of the Great Britain 1864-79 1d., Plate 89, lettered QA-QD, cancelled by two impressions of the numeral 'C63' postmark; Tampico Paid 27 July 1868 date-stamp of despatch from the British Post Office; and a firm's cachet of origin, Fernandez & Co. of Tampico. A few slight faults including horizontal filing fold, clear of the adhesives. Stanley Gibbons No. Z1.
Great Britain 1854-57 Watermark Small Crown Perforation 16 2d. pale blue, Plate 4, horizontal unused strip of 6, lettered AB-AG. There is a stain on the reverse of AC which just extends onto AD and there is very slight surface discoloration which affects AC to AE. The overall colour and appearance is very good and there is some original gum. Unused multiples of this stamp are very scarce and the total catalogue value as single stamps is £15,000. Great Britain 1847-54 Embossed 10d. brown, unused marginal block of 4 from the left of the sheet, good margins, colour and embossing, slight faults including horizontal creases at top and bottom and slight thinning. Almost full original gum and one of the finest multiples recorded of this stamp. Stanley Gibbons No. 57.
A matched set of four George III silver berry spoons, each with silver gilt bowls repousse with fruit and berries, engraved handles, London 1806 (2), 1809 and 1817, variously by Stephen Adams, Thomas and George Hayter, and unknown, 9oz gross, in a fitted velvet lined case with Mappin Brothers retail stamp.
