MAZZINI GIUSEPPE: (1805-1872) Italian Politician and Activist for the for the unification of Italy. A.L.S., Joseph Mazzini, two pages, small 8vo, n.p., 2nd August 1941, to Mr. Vingard, in French. Mazzini starts explaining to his correspondent `We are sending you the second number of Aposiolato Popolo that we have published. We have had to overcome obstacles which we can´t explain now. We will be issuing a new one every month, and may be soon every fifteen days.´ further saying `..please send all confidential letters you will need to send me through M. Joseph Lamberti, Café de France, for the cause sake…´ and concludes with a statement and thought `Only the People can and must understand Humanity. The one who is writing to you now, on behalf of the Italian workers belonging to our National Association “The Young Italy” wants the good, the real good, the good for ever.´ With integral address leaf. An ink collection stamp at the heading. Professionally repaired to the fold between pages, and few stains not affecting the text or signature. G £150-200

WELLINGTON DUKE OF: (1769-1852) Anglo-Irish Field Marshal & British Prime Minister 1828-30, 1834. A.L.S., Wellington, one page, 8vo, Stratfield Saye, 11th April 1841, to General Sir Willoughby Gordon. Wellington promises to convene a meeting of the committee on the Duke of York's Memorial, and concludes '…I will at that meeting suggest an arrangement for the gratification of the Commander of the Royal Military Asylum.' With integral address leaf in Wellington's hand, with a Penny Red postage stamp affixed and bearing a Maltese Cross postmark and also remnants of a red wax seal (small area of paper loss where broken). VG £150-200 General Sir James Willoughby Gordon (1772-1851) British Quartermaster-General to the Forces 1811-51.  In 1801 the Duke of York laid the first stone of the Royal Military Asylum in Dover, Kent.

ROOSEVELT ELEANOR: (1884-1962) American Politician and Diplomat. Wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Book signed and inscribed, a 4to hardback edition of Affectionately, F.D.R. A son´s story of a lonely man by James Roosevelt and Sidney Shalett, text edition published by Harcourt, Brace & Company, New York, 1959. The 394 pages book includes sixteen pages with photographs of Franklin D. Roosevelt and is signed and inscribed in bold blue ink to the free before title page `For Maurice Chevalier, for whom our admiration is unbounded and with the hope you will continue long to enrich us all, Eleanor Roosevelt´ also signed by the co-author and Eleanor Roosevelt´s son (`James Roosevelt´). Accompanied by an original envelope, addressed to Maurice Chevalier and with a post stamp dated in October 1959. Including the original dust jacket. VG £80-100 James Roosevelt (1907-1991) American Businessman and Politician. Eldest son of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. Served as Secretary of the President 1937-38 and in the U.S House of Representatives 1955-65.  Maurice Chevalier (1888-1972) French Actor and Entertainer.

ABDELKADER IBN MUHIEDDINE: (1808-1883) Algerian Religious and Military Leader “Sharif”. Abdelkader led the struggle against the French colonial invasion. D.S., The Loyal Abdelkader Al-Hosni, one page, folio, n.p., 1273, to an unknown recipient, in Arabic. Abdelkader sends his best regards to his correspondent and states in part `I have received your kind letter. Your explanation is clear enough, but even so, I would ask you to leave this matter related to the sheep aside, and same with all related to this affair…´ The document bears underneath Abdekader´s name a contemporary ink stamp. VG £400-600 The year 1273 in the Muslim Calendar corresponds to 1856.  Abdelkader´s regard for what would now be called human rights, including his Christian opponents, drew widespread admiration. His crucial intervention to save the Christian community of Damascus from a massacre in 1860 brought honours and awards from around the world. Within Algeria, his efforts to unite the country, and his ability to combine religious and political authority led him to be acclaimed as the `Saint among the Princes, the Prince among the Saints´.

Rare First Day Cover, signed Sun Fo, issued to commemorate the one hundred anniversary of Joseph´s Pulitzer birth, 1847-1947. Signed in bold black ink to the front cover. The envelope bears a US post-stamp to the front cover and seven Chinese post-stamps and postmarks to the verso, including a small newspaper article affixed. Small overall, minor age wear. G £100-150

YUSUPOV FELIX: (1887-1967) Russian Aristocrat, also known as Prince Yusupov, Count Sumarokov-Elston. Best known for his participation in the assassination of Grigori Rasputin, 1916. A.L.S., Youssoupoff, to the verso of a postcard, Biarritz, 5th November 1948 (the postage stamp shows 5th December), to Mr. Bonafé, in French. Yusupov states `Being absent for few days, I answer to you with delay. I will be in Paris between the 11th and 26th December. My address at Mrs Staroff…´ The postcard shows to the front the Casino and a crowded beach at Biarritz. Together with GRIGORI RASPUTIN (1869-1916) Russian mystical faith healer. An influential figure close to Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra Feodorovna. Unsigned 6 x 8 photograph, a Keystone original photograph, Paris. VG, 2 £500-600 On the 29th/30th December 1916, Yusupov together with Grand Duke Dimitri and three more partners in crime, murdered Rasputin in The Moika Palace, a Yusupov family property in Saint Petersburg.

HAYWORTH RITA: (1918-1987) American Actress. A good vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph by Hayworth, the image depicting Hayworth in a head and shoulders smiling pose. Signed (`Best Wishes, Rita Hayworth´) in bold black ink to a clear area of the image, also inscribed above the signature in another hand. Bearing to the verso a copyright 1952 stamp of the Columbia Pictures Corporation. Overall age wear and small staining, mostly to the edges, and only very slightly affecting one letter of her name. G £200-300

PAGANINI NICCOLO: (1782-1840) Italian Violinist and Composer. Rare boldly signed clipped piece, Nicolo Paganini, 12mo, Paris, 26th April 1831, in French. On a clipped piece, being the conclusion of a Paganini´s letter, the Italian virtuoso writes before signing `..wait for me and believe me your devoted servant.´, also dated beneath the signature in his hand. The clipped piece has been affixed to a larger darker paper, with annotation by a collector. To the verso, also affixed, an envelope with stamp dated 1832. F to G £500-600

GORKY MAXIM: (1868-1936) Alexei Maximovich Peshkov, Russian Writer and political socialist Activist. A good and unusual A.N.S., A. Peshkov, with sentiment, to the front of a postcard photograph, 18th February 1904, to Alexandra Mikhailovna Andreevna, in Cyrillic. The matte finish postcard photograph showing to the front six persons around a table at tea time. Gorky annotates to the front, to the lower part of the image, `Tea party with M. Gorki in the city of Penza, in the presence of the man of letters Savinkov and the painter Ladyzhensky. Very interesting!´ adding a sentiment `You should learn respect and love for order.´ Written and signed in bold black fountain pen ink by Gorky in a very unusual way, using his real name. To the verso bearing a postage stamp and several ink stamps from Saint Petersburg and Moscow, with addressee written in another hand. A slightly faded image due to age wear, and very small ink stains, otherwise G £1500-2000 The present document is related in part to the close relationship between Gorky and Leonid Andreyev (1871-1919) Russian Playwright and Novelist. Considered the father of the Russian expressionism.  Gennady Ladyzhensky (1852-1916) Russian Painter and member of the Imperial Academy of Arts.  Boris Savinkov (1879-1925) Russian Writer and leader of the Socialist Revolutionary Party fighting organization. He was responsible for several high-rank imperial officers assassinations. One of his best known works was an autobiography Memoirs of a Terrorist. Arrested in 1924 when he returned to Russia from exile, Savinkov died in 1925 in jail, whether killed or committing suicide.

T.L.S., Ivo Andric, one page, oblong 4to, Berlin, 11th February 1941, to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, in Yugoslav. On the printed stationery of the Yugoslavian Embassy, Andric, in his capacity as Ambassador of Yugoslavia to Berlin, requests few railways passes for several Yugoslavian railways employees and their wives, listing their names and the monetary value of the passes. Bearing an official ministry ink stamp with annotation to the verso. VG £200-300

FRANCO FRANCISCO: (1892-1975) Spanish General, Head of State of Spain from 1936 and de facto Regent of the Kingdom of Spain 1939-75. D.S., F.Franco, one page, small 4to, Zaragoza, 20th March 1930, to the General Governor of Cadiz, in Spanish. The partially printed document bearing the heading of the General Military Academy is an appointment, according to which Fernando Lacalle Benitez request has been approved, and will be included in the new announcement for future members of the academy. Franco has boldly signed the appointment in his capacity as General Director of the Military Academy. With a very unusual red ink small stamp beneath Franco´s signature saying “said by Francisco Franco” and several contemporary annotations at the base and verso of the document. VG £80- £100

Signed First Day Cover featuring two British postage stamps, and an ink stamp commemorating the 25th anniversary of Victory in Europe, V-E Day, Southampton 8th May 1970. Signed Montgomery of Alamein in bold blue ink to a clear area of the envelope. VG £100-120

NAPOLEON I: (1769-1821) Emperor of France 1804-14, 1815. N.S., Napoleon, to the left margin of a D.S. by several officers, one page, folio, Camp de Boulogne, 20th July 1804, in French. The partially printed document from the 14th Regiment of Infantry Administration Council at the camp de Boulogne is a letter addressed to the Emperor stating `To His Majesty Napoleon First Emperor of the French´, and states `We have the honour to present to you the losses that our Officers did suffer on 2nd July 1899, at the Ceva affair in the Piedmont´, further saying `The total destitution they lived at that time made them suffer all kind of privation situations since then. We are at today´s date their representatives to you, and therefore kindly ask on their behalf your authorization to receive a compensation, that only the misfortune of your absence has made impossible to sort out earlier attending their needs.´ To the left margin, annotated in the Emperor´s personal secretary Hugues Maret´s hand `Returned to the Minister of War to make a report on the losses had by this regiment. At the Pont de Brique, 25th July 1804´. Signed below by Napoleon with his full name. The document is signed by General Rouelle, Colonel Mazas, Chiefs of Batalions Blanc and Stahl, and few more officers. An excellent document, signed in full by Napoleon. With blank integral leaf. Bearing a contemporary stamp from the personal secretary of the war Minister. Small overall, minor age wearing, with several small tears and creasing to the edges, none affecting the texts or signatures. VG £1000-1500 The present letter is dated 20th July 1804 and addressed to Napoleon as First Emperor of the French. Napoleon was enthroned only two months earlier on 18th May 1804. The Pont de Brique Castle was the Headquarter of Napoléon from 1803 to 1805 with a view to the invasion of England.  Pierre Michel Rouelle (1770-1833) French General, and Jean François Stahl ( - 1809) Chief of Batalion, both served at the Camp de Boulogne, and fought at Austerlitz, Saragosse and Tarragone.  Jean François Mazas (1765-1805) French Colonel.  Hugues Bernard Maret (1763-1839) French Politician and Diplomat. Minister of Foreign affairs 1811-13 and President of the Ministers Council 1834.

Lot 206

A bust of John Travers Cornwell, of HMS Chester, Royal Navy, inscribed to the reverse 'The Boy, Aged 16, Hero of Jutland Battle, Faithful Unto Death'. Cornwell was a sight-setter on the ship forward 5.5" gun and was badly wounded by a direct hit on his station. He remained at his post despite most of his crew mates having been killed and he was subjected to further heavy shelling, before eventually making it to hospital where he died. He was buried in a communal grave in East London but after a public outcry, exhumed and re-buried with full naval honours and was later awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. The bust is approximately 12cm tall and carries the crest for South Queensferry, with a stamp to the base reading 'J. Edmond, South Queensferry'.
