After 1918, Wiele returned to England and Theodor Klein bought out his shares. In the 1920s, Michael Peyerl joined the company as a partner to operate the company as a photographic studio until World War II. Klein & Peyerl existed in other business areas until 1987. – A few light surface scuff marks, otherwise an attractive atmospheric print in very good condition.

Here it is seen hanging behind him on his studio wall in Dessau. – Creases throughout, some stronger creases in upper right, some backed tears, otherwise in good condition.

Burkhard, Balthasar -- Mexico City, Los Angeles and Chicago from above. 1999. 9 gelatin silver prints. 34,5 x 50,5 cm. Each with photographer's stamp on the verso.The Swiss photographer Balthasar Burkhard mainly worked in black and white and printed his photographs himself, often in huge dimensions, and framed his images in iron frames behind glass. He often worked in cycles. His cityscapes, landscapes or deserts are mostly taken from a bird's-eye-view perspective - photographed from helicopters or atop skyscrapers. He is internationally recognized as an important minimalist artist, with works in several international museums and public collections. An exhibition of his work was recently shown at the Fotomuseum Winterthur and Museum Folkwang in Essen. The majority of images offered here are Mexico City. These smaller formats are unique as Burkhard usually printed these images in very large sizes circa 130 x 250 cm. – Some light buckling in edges, a few with bumped corners, one with crease mark in upper right, otherwise in good condition.

A rare documentation of this extremely modern, streamlined design by Mies van der Rohe. United Press International agency stamp and typed press text label cutting affixed to the verso.The Japanese photographer Kyoichi Sawada worked for United Press International and received the 1966 Pulitzer Prize for Photography for his combat photography of the Vietnam War during 1965. Two of his photographs were selected as "World Press Photo of the Year" in 1965 and 1966. This image, showing a Vietnamese mother and her children wading across a river to escape a bombing of their village, won the award in 1965. Sawada died in 1970 while on assignment in Cambodia. – A few light handling marks, otherwise in very good condition.

METEROLOGISCHES INSTITUT BERLIN stamp as well as annotated in pencil in an unknown hand on mount verso.Clouds have long been the subject of artists who have either used them as background and atmospheric embellishment or to give a symbolic frame to their subjects. As of the 18th century clouds became more a subject in their own right and artists began focusing on their various forms and characteristics. With the development of more precise scientific procedures they also became the subject of more detailed studies such as the images offered here by Dr. Richard Gustav Neuhauss. A German ethnologist, meteorologist, physician, anthropologist and scientific photographer, Neuhauss also photographed some of Otto Lilienthal's flight attempts as well as microscopic images of snow crystals. These images are both scientific documentation and an artistic rendition of an endlessly captivating subject. – Some minimal surface rubbing/scuffing, two with traces of faint ink line /writing along upper edge, one with two small surface spots in lower edge and lower left corner, otherwise in very good condition.Lit.: Dr. R. Kitty Hoffmann studied at the Graphische Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt in Vienna where her teachers included Rudolf Koppitz. She then became an assistant in Trude Fleischmann's studio. After 1922 she opened her own studio in Vienna. Numerous images of her work were published in the fashion and illustrated press of the day. Hilsdorf, Jacob -- The writer Stefan George (1868-1933). Circa 1910/printed 1920s by Theodor Hilsdorf. Brown-toned gelatin silver print on heavy chamois paper. 21,5 x 16,5 cm. Studio stamp on the verso, mounted along upper edge to original card (crease in upper right, slightly soiled), signed Müller-Hilsdorf in pencil and studio stamp on mount verso.This image, along with several other images taken by Jacob Hilsdorf of Stefan George, was printed in the mid-1920s by his brother Theodor Hilsdorf using the original negative plates. After Jacob's early death in 1916, Theodor incorporated some of his brother's negatives in his archive. When these were reprinted, they were often signed Müller-Hilsdorf. In 1903 Theodor Hilsdorf had taken over the photography studio of his father-in-law Friedrich Müller. The studio was totally destroyed in 1945 in a bombing raid and only 2000 of the over 100,000 negatives of the archive remained intact. – A fine tonal print in excellent condition.Lit.: Franz Toth. Each circa 18 x 24 cm. 5 with agency stamp, 3 with typed paper press text label and annotated in pencil/ink on the verso.The riots of 1953 in East Germany took place in June of that year. A strike by East Berlin construction workers on June 16 turned into a widespread uprising against the Stalinist German Democratic Republic government the next day. The riots in Berlin were violently suppressed by tanks of the Soviet Forces in Germany and the Volkspolizei. In spite of the intervention of Soviet troops, the wave of strikes and protests was not easily brought under control. Even after June 17, there were demonstrations in more than 500 towns and villages. – Some traces of use, otherwise in good condition.

Hensky, Herbert -- The miner Adolf Hennecke in the former Soviet occupation zone of Germany. 1948. Vintage large-format gelatin silver print. 60 x 50 cm. Photographer's/estate stamp, numbers in red crayon and notations in felt-tip pen on the verso.On October 13, 1948, miner Adolf Hennecke performed four times the required work standard in an East German coal mine. Basically, it was a well-organized propaganda show to create role models and heroes and to raise work standards. The day before and after he had off. In addition, Hennecke received 1.5 kilograms of the then strictly rationed fat, three packs of cigarettes and a bottle of schnapps. In 1961 Photography Annual named him among the seven best photographers of the world. Mounted to original board, photographer's stamp below image in right corner on the mount.Jean-Marie Auradon became well known for his large-scale nudes, which he often posed like classical sculptures. He exhibited his work in 1930 and 1936 at the Salon International D'Art Photographique de Paris. He also belonged to the French 'Group XV' which included such well-known photographers as Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis. The group existed between 1946-1956 and sought to promote French photography by organizing frequent exhibitions while stressing the importance of technique and quality in photographic prints. – Minimal surface scuffing/rubbing, more visible at an angle, otherwise in very good condition.

Frankfurt/M. -- Photographer: Gustav J. Essinger and unknown. Views of ruins in Frankfurt/M., Germany, WWII. 1940-45. 13 vintage, mostly ferrotyped, gelatin silver prints, most on Agfa-Brovira paper. Each circa 17 x 23 cm and reverse. 6 with photographer's stamp on the verso. Between 1940 and 1945, the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces flew about 75 air raids on Frankfurt a. Main. During this time, about 5,559 people lost their lives, including many prisoners of war and forced laborers. In March 1944, almost all important cultural monuments as well as the entire medieval Old Town with its more than 1,800 half-timbered houses were burned down. – Some silver mirroring in edges, some with buckling in edges, some with surfce soiling/rubbing, some with traces of previous mounting on verso, a few with small tears. Errata: This lot contains 13 gelatin silver prints.

Barbette -- Photographer: Lucien Walery (1863-1935). The female impersonator Barbette. Circa 1923/24. Vintage toned gelatin silver print on doubleweight chamois paper. 19 x 16 cm. Signed by the photographer in ink in lower left; distributor's stamp and annotated in blue crayon and pencil on the verso.American-born trapeze artist Vander Clyde, who later called himself Barbette, performed in the circus dressed as a woman, among other things. Later, in the 1920s, he traveled through Europe and had great success especially with his travesty shows. He was friends with many artists and the many famous photographers (e.g. Man Ray, d'Ora Benda, Willinger, Walery and others) portrayed him. – Small crease in lower edge, corners minimally bumped, minimal silver mirroring in edges, only visible at an angle, otherwise a fine tonal print in very good condition.

Signed, titled and dated by the photographer in pencil, as well as photographer's stamp on the verso.Hans Martin Sewcz studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig. One of his main topics are former East Germany and other East-Bloc countries. He has had numerous exhibitions and his work is in various collections such as the Berlinische Galerie, the Deutsches Historisches Museum, the Institut für Moderne Kunst, Nuremberg and the Deutsche Bank AG Frankfurt a. Main Collection. His work was also shown in the exhibition "Das Gesicht des XX. Jahrhunderts" at the Deutsches Historisches Museum, Berlin. – Corners bumped, handling crease in mid right near edge, otherwise in very good condition.
