McMillan's Expeditions and Big Game Hunting in Sudan, Abyssinia, & British East Africa, first edition, frontispiece, plates and illustrations, folding colour map in pocket at end (2 small tears to folds), ink name-stamp of Major H. Twyford to endpapers and blank margin of p.193, original cloth, gilt, light fading to spine and upper cover, [Czech p.84], 8vo, privately printed, 1906.⁂ Scarce. Jessen, a Norwegian, writes about four hunting expeditions to Africa, taken with the McMillans of St. Louis, Missouri.

THERIACA FINA AL STRUZZO DORO V, ostrich standing left, with small serpent in beak; in left field, the lion of St. Mark / Blank. For similar, cf. U. Klein. "Von Paradies zu Paradies: Theriak und Theriak-Kapseln," SM 218 (June 2005), pp. 35-42; cf. CNG e414, lot 738. 11.07g, 25mm. Good Very Fine. Ex Saint Paul Antiques 4, 22 April 2017, lot 400. Theriac, described by Klein as a 'wonder drug', was an all purpose medicinal product originating as far back as the Hellenistic period. The centre for sale of this product was Venice, from where it was exported all over the world. Its composition, made up of opium, spices and snake flesh, amongst other ingredients, was a closely guarded secret, making it all the more desirable. The capsule seals, made exclusively of lead or lead alloy, indicated to the buyer, with the stamp of the pharmacy, the authentic nature of the product and to prevent inferior imitations.

ƟRichard Francis Burton, Falconry in the Valley of the Indus, first edition [London, John Van Voorst, 1852]complete, half-title, four tinted lithographed plates, Burton's personal copy with his label pasted to front free endpaper, ex-libris stamp to pp.1 of text, excellent copy, original dark purple cloth (discoloured to resemble dark brown), covers ruled in blind, spine gilt, head of spine chipped with some loss, 8vo [Penzer pp.41]One of the rarer Burton titles, and the fourth and final volume relaying his experiences in India and the surrounding areas. Penzer notes that the publisher John Van Voorst wrote to Burton in 1877 noting that 257 of the 500 copies first printed remained unsold, suggesting that they may have been scrapped altogether in preparation for a second edition. Ɵ Indicates that the lot is subject to buyer’s premium of 24% exclusive of VAT (0% VAT).

Some frets lifting, minor chips to the headstock veneer. Action quite high. The tension bar end where it meets the base of the metal head is roughly sawn off, suspect this could be a marriage between two pieces.

Royal Army Medical Corps (R.A.M.C) Airborne Steel Combat Helmet, very good example of the early pattern British Airborne Forces steel combat helmet having the fibre rim band to the shell and the early pattern lining system with leather harness chinstrap. Exterior of the shell retains much of the original paint and to one side is the original painted regimental colours for the Royal Army Medical Corps. The shell has a small impact dent to the rear section. Helmet liner shows some wear and has the early type padding. Leather sweatband stamped “BMB” and dated 1942 with size stamp 7 3/8. Very good example of an early combat helmet, the type that would have been worn during the Normandy landings and Operation Market Garden etc.

Scarce Early Fibre Rim British Paratroopers Steel Combat Helmet, good worn example of the early pattern British Paratrooper helmet having the fibre rim band, leather harness pattern chinstrap and early sorbo padding to the lining. Helmet retains much of its original combat finish to the exterior and interior of the shell. Leather liner is worn and remains of BMB stamp can be seen but the date is not visible. Generally a very good example of an early helmet.

WW2 1943 British Airborne Forces Paratrooper Helmet with Leather Chinstrap Harness and Original Combat Camouflage Net, helmet retains its original dark combat paint finish to the exterior and is fitted with a camouflaged net. Helmet has its original liner which is stamped “G & S 1943” and size stamp 6 3/8. Complete with the top rubber pad to the interior and full leather chinstrap harness strap. Helmet shows some signs of service wear but remains a good untouched as found example with lots of patina and character. Very good example.

Lot 314

Rare 1943 Special Pattern Battle Dress Trousers Issued to the British Paratroopers, the trousers which are complete with the original Henry Brown (Clothiers) Ltd label to the reverse which states “Trousers Parachutists” and clear 1943 date. The large front leg pocket with press stud brass fixing snaps being stamped “NEWEY”. The interior of the large pocket lined in a chamois leather. The two side pockets also lined in a chamois leather. To the leg is pocket for the Fairbairn Sykes (F.S) knife with blackened brass press stud fasteners and button. Double rear pockets with exposed buttons. Feint WD issue stamp to the inside with date letter “N” for 1943. The trousers have been fitted with a set of wartime braces. Overall the trousers remain in very good condition and are very rare.

WW2 1943 British Airborne Forces Denison Smock, very good example with the camouflage pattern remaining bright. Knitted wool cuffs and brass press stud fittings to the pockets and crutch area. Correct half zip front. Complete with the original crutch strap attachment. Interior of the smock retains the C.W.S Ltd size label, Size No7, which has bold red “X” across. Underneath the label is WD ink stamp with date letter “N” above for 1943. Overall a very good example of a large size wartime period smock.

British Airborne Forces Seven Pocket Sten Gun Magazine Pouch, very good used example of the extra ammunition carrier as issued to the British Airborne troops during the Normandy landings and operation market garden in Holland. The shoulder strap has remains of the makers stamp and date which appears to be either 1942 or 1944. Magazines in the image are only for display and are not included in the lot.

1945 Dated Artists Rifles Airborne Maroon Beret, fine example with leather trim, tan cloth lining with white inked size stamp “7 1/8” and “KANGOL WEAR LIMITED” makers mark. Broad arrow stamp with 1945 date. Beret has white metal stitched Artists Rifles cap badge. Interior stamped with WD broad arrow stamp and date letter “Z” (1945). Leather backed brass gromet vents. Some areas of moth tracking to the top.

1937 / 1940 Pattern Battle Dress Trousers, with 1937 pattern belt loops to the waist and ankle tabs. Button exposed front shell dressing pocket and map pocket with concealed flap. Rear pocket also with concealed flap. Label has been removed but WD stamp has date letter “O” for 1942. Some light areas of moth but generally good condition.

Imperial German Prussian Other Ranks Pickelhaube, black leather shell with re-painted or replaced grey metal fittings including Prussian eagle helmet plate. Leather shell heavily polished and cleaned. Interior of the helmet has the original leather liner and back peak has remains of issue stamp.

German Naval Divers Knife by Siebe Gorman & Co, good example with turned bakelite grip and brass top nut fitting. Plain brass oval cross guard. Housed in its original heavy brass scabbard. Double edged thick blade with “SIEBE GORMAN & CO” makers stamp. Blade measures 19 ½ cms, overall 35cms. Good untouched example.

Provisions for the fitting of the clip on seas or chest parachute. Manufactured by Irving Air Chute of Great Britain Limited and dated 24 Oct 1940 and 4 NOV 1940. AID acceptance stamp. Mint un-issued example.
