PIUS IX, Pope. [Papal War of 1860]. Manuscript petition in French for an apostolic blessing and plenary indulgence by Eugene J. O`Brien McSwiney of Cork for himself and his family signed and endorsed by Pius IX, 8th November 1860; manuscript document in Latin appointing McSwiney as a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great, signed by Cardinal de Genga, Rome 7th December 1860, with papal stamp, both on vellum; printed document in Italian, on paper (torn at folds), completed in manuscript for the same awarding him the Pro Petri Sede medal, "Presente a Ancona", 8 December 1860, and another relating to the same. (4) Eugene McSwiney was evidently one of the Pope`s Irish battalion who fought in the war against the Sardinian invaders.

HODGSON FAMILY. Eleven mid 19th c. daguerrotype portrait photographs (one damaged) of Sir Arthur Hodgson, his wife Eliza, and their children. With miniature watercolour of Eliza, and folded note by the subject "For dear Sir Arthur. The likeness of the girl he proposed to, and lately found among some papers. The most successful attempt of my girlhood. It could be photographed and coloured by a good artist." All cased, 2 of them with gilt Stamp of Freeman Brothers Sydney. (12) See illustration.

A collection of five Mauchline Ware stamp boxes, including a rectangular pattern ware box, with central design ‘Scott Monument Edinburgh’ within geometric decoration, hinged lid enclosing interior with three sections, 10cm wide, together with a circular Tartanware stamp box with penny red to cover, finished in M’Pherson tartan, 4.5cm diam., another Mauchline stamp box, top printed ‘Scott Monument, Edinburgh’, front panel printed ‘Edinburgh Castle’, hinged lid with bone handle enclosing twin divisional interior, and two others. A set of twenty-five Australian commemorative silver stamp ingots, by The Hallmark Diemasters and Engravers Limited, celebrating two centuries of achievement 1788-1988, each modelled as a different Australian stamp, in a fitted case with paper-work, no. 106 out of an edition of 10,000, approx. weight 15oz.
A novelty political silver stamp moistener, by William Hutton and Sons, Sheffield 1912, modelled as a a scroll with David Lloyd George`s face, pull-off cover, on a circular base, also marked with a registration number, height 7.2cm. This may relate to the 1911 Act of Parliament in which the ability of the House of Lords to veto the House of Commons was removed.

ALBERT PRINCE: (1819-1861) Prince Consort of the United Kingdom, husband of Queen Victoria. Autograph Envelope signed, Albert, partially addressed in his hand to Her Grace the Duchess of Sutherland in Staffordshire. The envelope bears a Penny Red postage stamp and several postmarks, one dated 17th December 1859. Accompanied by the red wax seal neatly cut from the verso. Together with a brief A.N.S., Albert, on a slim 12mo piece, evidently part of an envelope wrapper, n.p., n.d., in full, ‘Immediate, Sir James Graham, Albert’, annotated in ink in an unidentified hand below. Also including Daniel O’Connell (1775-1847) Irish Political Leader. Autograph Envelope signed, Daniel O’Connell, addressed in his hand to Joseph Boyce, a merchant in Dublin, and dated London, 22nd June 1838 in his hand. The envelope has been neatly split and laid down to show the verso which bears a red wax seal. Some light age wear, G to VG, 3
[ROYAL WEDDING]: Small collection of original printed ephemera relating to the wedding of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, 29th July 1981, including menu, programme and seating plan for their Wedding Breakfast, Order of Carriage Processions, invitations (2), two official passes issued to Clementine Hambro and Sue Stewart, each signed by the Comptroller Alastair Aird, allowing entry to Clarence House, 29th July 1981. Also including ten original colour 3.5 x 3.5 candid photographs taken on the day, subjects include Clementine Hambro, Lord Nicholas Windsor, Princess Margaret, Prince Andrew, Prince Charles and Lady Diana etc., and a larger 7 x 5 photograph bearing the official credit stamp of photographer Lord Lichfield to the verso. VG, 19 Clementine Hambro, the Great Granddaughter of Winston Churchill, served as the youngest Bridesmaid at the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. Aged 5 at the time, she was accompanied by her nanny, Sue Stewart, throughout the day.
CATHERINE II: (1729-1796) Catherine the Great. Empress of Russia 1762-96. A good, attractive D.S., Ekaterina, in Cyrillic, one page, oblong folio (vellum), St. Petersburg, 19th May 1774. The printed document, featuring a fine engraved border decorated with the Imperial Eagles and military insignia, is a military commission promoting Major Karl von Stackelberg to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel following his `zealous and industrious` performance in the Russian service and stating `we do have the hope and the confidence that he in the new rank most graciously bestowed upon him by us, will conduct himself as uprightly and as properly as befit`s the upright and good officer.` Boldly signed by the Empress at the foot. With large blind embossed Imperial paper seal affixed. A small black rubber stamp to the verso indicates that the document was once part of the collection of Dr. Max Thorek of Chicago. ALDRIN BUZZ: (1930-) American Astronaut, Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo XI (1969). The second man to set foot on the moon. Signed commemorative cover, featuring a black rubber stamped cachet in recognition of Apollo XI and the US Navy Recovery Force. The cover also has an Apollo 8 postage stamp, cancelled 24th July 1969. Signed (`Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 LM Pilot`) in black ink by Aldrin to a clear area. VG
ASTRONAUTS: A 4to sheet of paper individually signed by over thirty astronauts including Buzz Aldrin, James Lovell, Walt Cunningham, Scott Carpenter, Stuart Roosa, Jack Lousma, Gordon Fullerton, Helen Sharman, John Fabian, Ed Gibson, Bob Overmyer, Owen Garriott, Don Peterson, Jerry Carr, Hank Hartsfield, Bruce McCandless etc. An Austrian postage stamp and cancellation appear in the upper left corner indicating that the signatures were obtained during the Association of Space Explorers Planetary Congress in Austria on 11th October 1993. BROWNE GEORGE: (1784-1856) English Naval Captain, Flag-Lieutenant to Vice-Admiral Lord Collingwood. Browne also served as Second Signal Lieutenant and assisted Signal Lieutenant Pasco in preparing the flags required to send the signal England expects every man to do his duty during the Battle of Trafalgar, 21st October 1805. Rare A.L.S., George Browne, one page, 4to, Bridgwater, n.d. (‘Sunday, 3 o’clock’, 4th October 1845), to his son, S. W. Browne, ‘My Dear Dear Boy’. Browne writes ‘I have only time to inform you that your dear Mother went with me to Chapel this morning but is now dangerously ill. I fear of a seizure.’ and in a postscript remarks ‘You shall hear from me again by tomorrows post’. With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original envelope wrapper hand addressed by Browne and bearing a Penny Red postage stamp and red wax seal. VG
NELSON HORATIA: (1801-1881) Illegitimate daughter of Horatio Nelson and Emma Hamilton. Rare D.S., H N Ward, one page, 4to, n.p., 24th August 1865. The attractively penned manuscript document is a receipt for £75.16.10 from Frances Elizabeth, Dowager Countess Nelson, `sole surviving Trustee of the Settlement executed on my marriage with my late husband The Reverend Philip Ward deceased….being the proceeds of sale of £85.18.9 Consols sold at my request and representing my 1/8th part of the 1/8th Share of my late daughter Caroline Mary Ward in £5500 Consols…` Signed by Nelson at the foot, her surname across an affixed pale violet One Penny Inland Revenue stamp. A couple of neat tears to the folds have been repaired to the verso, otherwise about VG Horatia Nelson had married Rev. Philip Ward on 19th February 1822 and together they had ten children, Caroline Mary Ward being their youngest, born in January 1836.
