Smoking Advertising: Three 20th Century French Advertising Fans, all with double paper leaves and mounted on basic wood. The first, of fontange form, shows a young lady with lighted cigarette between her teeth, the caption reading "Fumez le papier à cigarettes JOB". The verso is plain. Overall height 9.5 inches or 24cm. Next, a folding fan of normal form, the recto advertising "Cigarettes WEEKEND", showing three people wearing yellow sweaters next to the caption "Goût Anglais", the design marked d'aprés Paul Colin, the verso with a design of a dark skinned lady wearing a red headscarf and smoking a cigarette, this time d'aprés ( possibly) Jean d'Ylery, the cigarettes being "GITANES VIZIR" in a red packet. To the left on either side is written" "Caisse Antonome d'Amortissement". Guard length 8.5 inches or 22cm.Finally, a fan advertising "Westminster Cigarettes", packed in a colourful tin with a design of the Houses of Parliament and the words "cork tipped", with a further design of a clenched fist in the centre of a pair of wings, with the words "Trade Mark". On the verso, a colourful depiction of a bird perched on a bough of Chinese blossom, with Chinese characters and red stamp to the upper left. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm (3) CONDITION REPORT: . The first two fans have wear to the left with some creasing. The third fan is crisp, guards of superior quality, slight brown marking to the recto.
A Very Interesting Chinese Fan that would benefit from more research. The monture, of polished wood, is carved on both guards with various symbols and outdoor features. The gorge is plain. The double paper leaf bears a red stamp and characters above a basic rocky landscape, but to the right a clearly important person is meeting with two others, one wearing a sword. More characters in a larger format cover the verso. The paper is fairly sturdy. The vendor has noted the fan as Japanese, dating from c.1790. Guard length 13.25 inches or 33.5cmIt is thought that the fan reproduces a well-known Chinese text engraved on a slab, dating from the sixth century. It is difficult to translate literally today, but it is the epitaph of a high Imperial official and is thought to recount his genealogy. CONDITION REPORT: . some slight tears the bottom border, some light staining to the top left, recto, and darker stains seen on the verso
