Turkey.- Spencer (Edmund) Travels in European Turkey, in 1850, 2 vol., first edition, tinted lithograph frontispieces, vignette titles, large folding linen-backed map, ex-library with neat pencil note and ink-stamp to title verso, contemporary calf, a little rubbed, bumping to corners and extremities, [Blackmer 1582], 1851 § [Howard (George, Earl of Carlisle] Diary in Turkish and Greek Waters, second edition, presentation copy from publisher with blind-stamp to title, half-title, previous owner's ink signature, scattered spotting, advertisements at end and printed on endpapers, cracked hinges, original cloth, "Hookham's Library" label to upper cover and spine, a little rubbed, light spotting, bumping to corners and extremities, 1854; and another similar, 8vo (5)⁂ The author of the first, Edmund Spencer, was dubious figure. Blackmer says of his first work, "An article in the 1837 Quarterly Review of 1837 casts doubt on Spencer's work. Although he may have travelled in Turkey, the reviewer believed that Spencer had used, without acknowledging, a great deal of material from a work on Circassia by Taitbout de Marigny ..."

Aside from notes on various subjects the present work furnishes us with anecdotes from the author's personal life. We learn, for example, that he lived in a haunted house in Rome and he provides us with many particulars about the ghost. Provenance: 'Maitland' (contemporary ink signatures to title); G.V.W.
