WWI fine series of eight whole plate size photographs taken in WWI showing scenes in the trenches, an attack on a village, a tank advancing over the top, a German trench with dead soldiers etc. This photographs each bear the ‘Crown Copyright’ stamp showing that they were taken by an official photographer, clearly, from the quality of the images, a professional. Latham (John) A general synopsis of birds Supplement; Index Ornithologicus together 10 vol. 8 hand-coloured vignette titles 141 (of 142) hand-coloured plates bound without pl.133 (the Abyssinian plant cutter) few clean tears several minor holes few plates loose original boards uncut somewhat worn but sound from the library of Thomas Ignatius Forster (1789-1860 naturalist) with his stamp dated 1838 (incorporating his favourite dog Shargs) on titles and some notes in vol.4 (see below) 4to 1781-90. ***Forster is best known for his pamphlet on the swallow which went through 6 editions 1808-17. He has extra-illustrated the swallow section(Vol.4 pp. 560-88) with 6 figures of the birds printed in the margins in black(and in one case at the top of plate 56 in red) and there are a few ms. notes by him. A substantial group of Forster books were sold by Sothebys 13/4/89( this Latham was lot 83) and the catalogue remarks on Shargs “This remarkable poodle was distinguished by his intelligence and fidelity as well as his taste for wine tea and coffee”.

One of the first important French books to use lithography on a grand scale and the standard of production is equal to that of Napoleon`s Description de l`Égypte. Most of the plates illustrate views in Egypt and Syria including the famous view of Drovetti French consul in Egypt measuring a giant head. In 1816 Forbin replaced Denon as Director of Museums and in 1817 he undertook a year-long voyage to the Levant having been authorised to purchase antiquities for the Louvre. He travelled to Milos where his son-in-law had negotiated the purchase of the recently discovered Venus de Milo and from there to Athens Constantinople Asia Minor Syria and Palestine. Large and interesting electric pendulum, within a mahogany glazed case stamped U. C. S. W.
