Read in conjunction with H.C. de Courval, with oval embossed stamp to lower margin of each plate. Engelmann (1788-1839) introduced lithography to France in 1814, having learned the technique in Munich from its inventor Senefelder. Englemann, in collaboration with his son, invented chromolithography in 1837. The engravings that comprise this important work are amongst the first lithographies of the history of art and are the first French lithographies to illustrate the Bible. (1)

GC, the blade with traces of original polish, the brass with traces of gilt (some wear and light pitting)
