A Victorian Customs Officer's Sword, the slightly curved, single edge, quill back blade, length 76 cm, etched with the crest of the Her Majesty's Customs, and with maker's name, ''Salter, Sword Cutler, Corner of Adelphi, 73 Strand'', the gilt brass stirrup hilt with twin langets, relief-cast with a crest, ribbed ivory grip, gilt brass-mounted leather scabbard This sword was owned by David Williams, who was born on the Isle of Wight in 1779. In 1800 he moved to Cornwall where he joined the Coast Guard, initially as a Riding Officer. In due course the Coast Guard was absorbed into the new Customs Service, with which David remained until retirement, sometime before 1851, having attained the rank of Inspecting Commander of Coast GuardSword blade bright but with scatterd patches of rust and pitting. Quillon bar slightly bent and with evidence of hairline crack. Some wear to gilding on hilt. Leather scabbard broken at centre. Leather very dry. Gilding to scabbard mounts worn.
