A Rare Chillingham .650 (16-Bore) Percussion Rifled Musket, No. 20By J. Purdey Of London, Circa 1833With browned twist sighted barrel rifled with ten spiral grooves, octagonal at the breech and with folding-leaf sights from '100' to '200' yards, each leaf with central platinum line, case-hardened patent breech and tang each numbered '20', the former with pierced platinum plug and oval steel protective shield, signed case-hardened detented flat lock numbered on the inside, case-hardened hammer, figured three-quarter stock with cheek-piece, plain brass mounts comprising butt-plate, spur trigger-guard, turned ramrod-pipes, and fore-end cap, brass-tipped ramrod with horn terminal, and retaining nearly all its original finish, Birmingham proof marks; together with its socket bayonet with blade (some old light pitting) of hollow triangular section stamped 'S. Hill', and socket numbered '20' to correspond with the musket, in an original black leather scabbard (damaged and open along the seam, locket and chape missing) (2)85 cm. barrel Footnotes:This is one of a unique stand-of-arms consisting of thirty-five weapons commissioned by the 5th Earl of Tankerville (1776-1859) of Chillingham Castle, Northumberland, complete with bayonets and other accessories, to arm a body of yeomanry. Purdey completed the order between February 1832 and June 1833. The first thirty-three weapons are virtually identical and were supplied at a cost of £10 each including bayonets. Numbers 34 and 35 were of higher quality priced at £15 15s each, and were intended for use by Lord Tankerville and his son, Lord Ossulston (see lot 93). British 1845 pattern officer's sword attributed to Captain Durham Plomer, King's (Liverpool) Regiment, with brass hilt, shagreen and wire grip, VR cypher to hilt, Henry Wilkinson and no 29426 to decorated 84cm blade and scabbard, with research paperwork. Alfred Durham Plomer was born in India on 1868 and educated at Cheltenham College and the Royal Military College from 1888. Captain Durham Plomer was wounded at Bergendal and reported missing on 28th August 1900.
