A George III light cavalry sabre, 90cm curved blade, part blued and with engraved decoration, engraved with initials 'JWHB', GILL'S Warranted, wire bound wormed wood grip, metal scabbard engraved with a coat of arms and motto 'Maintien Le Droit'.Footnote: The motto 'Maintien Le Droit' translates as 'Support The Right' and is the motto of the Brydges family, the initials relating to John William Head Brydges.John William Head Brydges was born in July 1764, the third son of Edward Brydges of Wootton Court. He was a Lieutenent-Colonel of the Romney Fencible Cavalry (1794-1800), also later Captain of Sandgate Castle and Commissioner of Dover Harbour. John Brydges was a member of parliament for the constituency of Coleraine (1820-1831) and Armagh (1831-1832). He died in 1839.
