American Civil War interest 1850 pattern Infantry officer's sword with brass hilt, pommel and knucklebrow and shagreen and hide grip, the 77cm etched blade marked US to ricasso and Ames Mfg Co Chicopee MAS, US and pluribus unum, with brass mounted leather scabbard, locket stamped AMES MFG & Co Chicopee, Mas., attributed to Captain James Frackenthall, E Company 12th Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry (41. Pa Vols), together with his copy of the US Infantry Tactics for the Instruction, Exercise and Manoeuvres of the United States Infantry 1863, annotated to front cover Lieut J E Frackenthall, E Co 12th Regt. James C Frackenthall enlisted at Easton as a private in Company E 12th Reserve Regiment and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant March 1862, to First Lieutenant May 1st 1863 and to Captain 13th March 1865. He was sent to Doylestown as a recruiting officer in 1862, served at Gettysburg, Drainsville and throughout the Peninsular Campaign and was mustered out of service at the close of the war. A late Victorian British Royal Navy Officer's short sword, with a shagreen handle and lion mask mount and shaped guard, with leather scabbard, length 59cm, blade length 45.5cmSword is in well used condition, the blade is very rusty and worn, the edge has some loss, there is some engraved decoration but very difficult to see underneath all the rust, handle is not damaged but just showing signs of wear, scabbard is split all the way down the seam and the bottom point is missing, some cracking and visible water damage with some loss of the leather, mounts again just worn
