Pioneers were a crucial part of any regiment and this type of sword was deemed of great importance, assisting the men with preparing defensive works, constructing military accommodation and clearing trees and pathways. Richmond, 1st Gloucestershire Regiment`, enclosing Officer`s cap, white and black with oak leaf band and embroidered regimental sphinx badge, monogrammed `H.C.R.` by Hawkes & Co, in its circular japanned tin with brass shield shape tailors plaque inscribed to the recipient; navy blue officer`s tunic, with brass regimental buttons breast with Queen`s South Africa riband bar; scarlet mess jacket, with brass regimental buttons; two pairs of trousers each with red stripe; crimson sash and cummerbund ; two pairs of officer`s spurs, sword scabbard; leather sword bag and letter dated 30.8.1905 Captain Harold Christopher Richmond M.I.D. (1880-1915), educated at Balliol College, Oxford, commissioned Lieutenant, 1900, served during the Boer War with the Gloucestershire Regiment, entitled to a Queen`s South Africa with four clasps, re-engaged during the Great War with the Regiment, In the early hours of 25.1.1915 the 3rd Brigade was warned to expect a large-scale German attack on Cuinchy and Givenchy. Both ÒAÓ and ÒDÓ Company were in the line when the attack began. At 07.35 hours Capt W K George and Capt H C Richmond of ÒDÓ Company were killed. Richmond is commemorated in the Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France. A photograph of the recipient can be found on the internet. (-)

An unusual cavalry trooper’s sword, of the British 1821 type but with some variations, slightly curved blade 35 1/4 in. with a broad fuller to 8 1/4 in. from the point, ricasso marked ‘V.W.’ and with crowned inspection mark of ‘L’ over ‘8’, three bar hilt, plain back strap with smooth pommel, ribbed leather covered grip, steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
