A fine Indian talwar, the blade inscribed with the signature of Asadulah Isfahani,late 17th/early 18th Century with 17th Century Persian curved single-edged watered blade, signed 'the work of Asadulah Isfahani' in gold within a shaped cartouche, and with a further inscription within a shaped cartouche in gold at the forte, chiselled iron hilt of characteristic form entirely encased in gold foil, decorated at the borders and in the centre with raised lines, and including knuckle-guard with stylised serpent head finial and disc pommel, in a velvet-covered wooden scabbard with gold chape 79cm; 31in blade The second inscription reads in translation: "The unrivalled master and a world of art unto himself, Asad who beat the drum of excellence in the work of his time." Asadulah Isfahani was the bladesmith of Shah Abbas the Great (1587-1628) a number of blades bearing his signature are recorded with dates ranging from AH811 (AD1408-9) to AH1223 (AD1808).

A Balkan silver-mounted sword,19th Century with 17th Century curved fullered blade retaining traces of watered pattern, decorated with a gold-encrusted calligraphic cartouche at the forte, parcel-gilt silver hilt comprising cross-piece with spatulate terminals and solid grip each decorated with scrollwork and foliage, in its fishskin-covered wooden scabbard with large parcel-gilt silver mounts en suite with the hilt 79.4cm; 31.75 in blade The inscription reads in translation: "It is from Solomon, and is [as follows]: In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful". Qur'an, surat al-naml (XXVII), 30. The above quotation often appears as a legend for seals of those with the name Sulayman. The same legend appears on one of the seals of the Safavid King Sulayman I (1077-1105 AH, 1666-95), whether he used this for his arms remains unclear. à
