AN 1821 PATTERN HEAVY CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD, by Maton & Co, Calcutta, the 34 3/4" blade acid etched with crown over VR amongst foliate scrolls, the maker's name, a family crest with festooned Latin inscription "POST VIRTUTEM CURRO", the owner's name "FREDERICK HOLDEN CLEAVER", a festooned list of battle honours comprising Relief of Kimberley, Pardeberg, Driefontein, Poplar Grove, Bloemfontein and Kara Siding, and "LONDON MADE" to back blade, pierced hilt of typical form, wire wound shagreen grip and chequered top grip and pommel, 40 3/4" long (Est. plus 21% premium inc. VAT)No scabbard, darkening to blade but not pitted. Hilt in reasonable order.
