A naval officer’s 1827 patt sword, broad, pipe back, quill pointed blade 31”, etched with 1816-37 Royal Arms and motto, crowned fouled anchor within frosted panels, regulation gilt brass hilt, solid guard incorporating crowned fouled anchor, with turn down inner portion, wirebound sharkskin grip, lion’s head pommel, in its brass mounted leather scabbard. Basically GC, the blade retaining a little original polish (some rust stains and very light pitting patches, most gilt rubbed, scabbard worn, middle band missing). (See lot 1043 for illustration).
A post-1902 officers sword of the R Naval Reserve, very slightly curved blade 31” etched with crown, “RNR” and fouled anchor within scrolled frosted panels, regulation brass hilt incorporating crowned fouled anchor, with turn down inner portion, wirebound sharkskin grip, lion’s head pommel, in its brass mounted leather scabbrd with dress knot. Basically GC, the blade retaining much original polish (a few small rust stains, mostly at tip, gilt rubbed, knot and scabbard leather worn) (See lot 1043 for illustration).
An ERI Light Infantry officer’s sword by Hawkes & Co, straight dumbell section blade 32½”, etched with crowned ERI cypher, Royal Arms and foliate scrolls, nickel plated Gothic hilt with its leather knot in its nickel plated dress scabbard, additional black leather covered FS scabbard and leather cover. GC (hilt slightly bent, proof inset missing from blade, cover torn)
An ERII 1912 pattern cavalry officers sword, straight fullered blade 35” by Wilkinson No 87671, etched with ERII cypher, R Arms and wreath within scrolled panels, regulation hilt, engraved bowl guard, wirebound fishskin grip, in associated plated scabbard. GC (worn, polished and replated overall)
A late Vic presentation 1827 pattern rifle officers sword, straight fullered blade 31” by Edw Thurkle, Denmark St, Soho, London, etched with crowned VR cypher and “Presented to Staff Sergeant E J W Randle as a Mark of Esteem by the Members of F Company 2nd London Rifles on his Promotion, March 31, 1900”, regulation steel hilt incorporating crowned bugle, fishskin grip (wire missing), in its steel scabbard. GC (blade worn, hilt cleaned) (See lot 1043 for illustration).
A Vic 1827 pattern Rifle Officer’s sword by Hamburger & Co, curved pipe back blade 33” etched with crown, strung bugle, Rifle Brigade and inscription “No Me Saques Sin Razon No Me Embraines sin Honor”, steel Gothic hilt with wire bound fishskin covered grip. In its steel scabbard. GC (minor wear and marking to blade, hilt and scabbard tarnished) (See lot 1043 for illustration).
A Vic 1822 patt Infantry officer’s sword, slightly curved SE blade 32½” etched with crowned VR cypher, foliate scrolls and family crest with motto “In Hoc Sign..nes”. Brass Gothic hilt with folding guard and wire bound fishskin grip, in its brass scabbard. GC (grip covering worn, scabbard dented)
A Geo IV General officer’s mameluke sword, curved flat blade with clipped back tip, 29”, by Odell & Atherly, 71 & 72 Burlington Arcade, London, etched with crown/GR cypher/IV/wreath/crossed baton and sword/wreath within plain panels, regulation copper gilt hilt, the crosspiece incorporating crossed baton and sword, ivory grips, in its leather scabbard with copper gilt mounts, the locket engraved Odell & Atherley, 72 Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly, London. Basically GC (some light pitting, mostly to edge of blade, much gilt rubbed, ring and 2 rosettes missing from grip, one grip chip) (See lot 1049 for illustration).
An unusual Venezuelan officer’s sword, part DE blade 31½” by WKC Solingen, with etched panels inscribed ‘Gabierno de Venezuela 1900” and “Honor y Lealtad”; brass hilt with Venezuelan arms on guard and lion’s head pommel, fishskin covered grip; in its brass mounted steel scabbard with 2 hanging rings, and with incorrect bullion sword knot. GC (light rust to scabbard, grip wire lacking). (See lot 1049 for illustration).
An African Kuba machete, decorated blade 19”, with wooden hilt, QGC (heavily corroded, hilt damaged); a Mongo club knife with 15” cresent ended blade and wooden hilt, Generally GC; and a Malay short sword, the 16” blade with raised inscriptions for its entire length, the carved horn hilt partly covered with metal foil, in its scabbard. Generally GC (worn, blade rusty). (3)
A late 18th century smallsword, flat hexagonal blade 30½”, etched at forte with helmeted bust and “Honi soit qui mal y pense” within wrigglework panels, and for the remaining length with foliate scrolls, traces of gilt overall, copper gilt hilt with double shell guard and pas d’ane rings, knucklebow and ball pommel, simulated copper wire grip, in its tooled leather scabbard with gilt stud. GC (50% gilt rubbed, quillon bent, scabbard some wear and tip restored). (See lot 1049 for illustration).
A German M1898 Mauser bayonet, the slender pipe back blade officicially cut down to 10¾”, in its leather scabbard, the hilt and scabbard mounts nickel plated for parade use, and with regimental markings, GC (some wear to plating); a P1907 SMLE bayonet, in its scabbard, and a WWII British steel helmet. A German short M1898 bayonet, plated saw backed blade 10” with early Eickhorn mark, the hilt with bird’s head pommel and chequered horn grips, in its steel scabbard, generally GC (slightly pitted and worn overall, one grip wormed), and an Austrian socket bayonet for the M1854 Lorenz rifle. QGC. (2)

* An 1854 pattern officer's sword of the Scots Guards by Wilkinson, the steel hilt pierced with regimental badge, the blade etched with battle honours (the latest Modder River), one side further etched with crowned George V cypher and a panel reading "In Memory of M.N.S. Killed at Ypres 16th June, 1915", the other side with Scots Guards badges and initials P.A.M., in leather covered service dress scabbard, with gold cord and acorn sword knot, together with additional plated steel scabbard, in leather carrying case, the flap stamped "Major Lord Methuen, Scots Gds. In Memoriam M.N. Schiff, Scots Gds." (3)
* An 1854 pattern Scots Guards Officer's sword by Wilkinson, the steel hilt pierced with regimental badge, the blade etched on one side with crowned Victorian cypher and battle honours including Waterloo and Talavera, the other side etched with crowned regimental badge, battle honours including Alma and Sevastopol and with a further panel etched "To Wm Gascoigne from his Godfather General Kenah" in plated steel scabbard and with bullion sword knot with gilt acorn. Major-General Sir William Gascoigne, K.C.M.G. was born in 1844, commissioned into the Scots Fusilier Guards in 1863, was commanding the regiment in the early 1880s, serving in the Egyptian War, the Sudan, Canada, China and Hong Kong. Lieutenant-General Thomas Kenah, C.B., Colonel of the 63rd Foot, was commissioned in 1799 serving in Holland, Egypt, Sicily, and the Peninsula, he was appointed Lt-Gen in 1851. (2)
* An 1857 pattern Royal Engineers officer's sword by Wilkinson, the steel hilt pierced in honeysuckle pattern and the plain unfullered blade etched near the forts "Paul Methuen from George Chapman", in brown leather covered service scabbard (chape lacking), with sword frog and a Sam Browne belt. An old label attached to the hilt identifies this as the sword carried by Lord Methuen when commanding "Methuen's Horse" in Bechuanaland in 1884-85. (3)
