TWO SIMILAR FRENCH 19TH CENTURY HEAVY CAVALRY SWORDS, 1822 pattern, having brass three bar hilts with wirebound grips, fullered tapering steel blades, one stamped: W.R.K. Steel scabbards, one with two suspension loops, one with single suspension loops. Overall lengths 108cm approx. (2)(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Both blades have some tarnishing and surface rust, the scabbards appear to have been varnished and have horse hair or something adhering to them. One is marked V.R.K. The other has rubbed indistinct mark. No numbers on scabbards. One hilt is numbered 078. Blades not numbered. No press studs. Blades - 90 cm approximately. Scabbards - 92 cm approximately. A very rare George III 1796 pattern heavy cavalry officer's sword, the 89cm single edge blade with martial engraving and hatchet-point, so-called 'Honeysuckle' ladder hilt with wire-bound leather grip, steel scabbard with two suspension rings. CONDITION REPORT: Overall the sword is in very good condition. The grip has some historic signs of worm. Virtually all of the wire binding is intact. The sword appears to have been cleaned/polished at some point in the last few years, presumably to remove a layer of rust. This appears to be an unfinished project, however. The sword currently has an all over layer of fine surface scratches. The sword still retains its aged, grey patina to the steel. The scabbard is in similar condition. The appearance of the sword and scabbard could be much improved with further polishing, although this would have to be done with care. The scabbard has several typical dents but overall is in good condition. See additional images.
