A GEORGE III INFANTRY OFFICER'S 1796 PATTERN SWORD AND SCABBARDEARLY 19TH CENTURYWith 32½in (82cm) steel blade, brass guard and foliate pommel, with leather scabbard inscribed 'Tatham to his Majesty' Provenance:Possibly gifted by George Prince of Wales, later George IV, to John Hely-Hutchinson, 2nd Earl of Donoughmore Catalogue Note:The inscription on the leather scabbard 'Tatham to his Majesty' refers to Henry Tatham, Sword Cutler and Belt Maker to the King, established at no. 37 Charing Cross near the Admiralty in the late 18th/early 19th centuries. Although the bill for the sword offered here cannot be identified, on the 17 July 1799, George, Prince of Wales (later George IV, 1762-1830), was invoiced for 'A Spanish Sword', 'An Old English Sword', 'A silver gilt Dress Sword from the late King of France's Cabinet' together with 'A very old German Rifle' and 'A very elegant silver mounted gun'; the total amounting to £72 17s 6d (GEO/MAIN/29091-29091a). The Prince evidently did not settle his account on time for the receipt of payment from Tatham was not issued until 25 April 1801 (ibid.). Although only five bills from Tatham are extant in the Royal Archives, they show that he was supplying swords to the Prince of Wales/George IV, both antique and new, from 1799, and possibly earlier, to at least 1826.Given the close friendship that existed between the Prince of Wales/George IV and John Hely-Hutchinson, 2nd Earl of Donoughmore (1757-1832) - see lot 50 - it is possible that this sword was a personal gift from George to his trusted confidant Lord Hely-Hutchinson.Condition Report: Gilt metal tip of scabbard missingSmall section of the quillan missingRusted solid within the scabbardCondition Report Disclaimer

The Following 29 lots are from the collection of Michael Thomas Moon who was an architect and amateur historian descended from the 'De Mohuns', who arrived with William the Conqueror.It was Michael's interest in his long family ancestry that sparked his life long passion for British military history.He started collecting in his late teens and assembled a superb collection of quality swords , each meticulously catalogued with descriptions of the regimental officers who owned them and the campaigns in which they saw action, bringing each to colourful life. Michael's patriotism was reflected in his collection and in turn he respected those who had served the country dutifully and courageously, therefore his wishes were for the proceeds of the sale of the collection to go to the Gurkha Trust. A Victorian 1831 pattern General & Staff Officers' mameluke sword by Henry Wilkinson, London,: the curved acid etched blade with crown and 'VR' cipher, makers mark as per title to ricasso and numbered to the back ' 5909' over gilt brass hilt, two piece ivory grip with brass screws, and bullion loop, together in a brass scabbard with double suspension rings, blade length, 77.5cm.*Notes- The records of Wilkinson Sword Co , show the sword was made in February 1855 as 'General Officers sword with dress and field scabbards. There is no purchasers name but the initials 'JBG are shown. Reference to army lists 1855 show the only officer with these initials and rank as John Bloomfield Gough who in January 1855 was given the rank of Major General.

An 1822 pattern General and Staff Officers sword by Pillin, London,: the straight single edge blade with acid etched decoration, crown and 'VR' cipher to one side and coat of arms for Rupert De la Bere with the motto 'Prest Pour le Roy' (Ready for the King) to the other, gilt brass hilt with single quillon and three bar guard decorated en suite, wire bound fish skin grip with red and gilt bullion loop, together with a gilt brass scabbard with double suspension loops, blade length 82cm. *Notes- Sir Rupert De La Bere 1st Baronet KCVO (1893-1978) was a business man and solder who was the 625th Lord mayor of London. During WWI he served with both the East Surrey Regiment and the RAF.

The only A Weston in the Army lists is for an Alfred Weston who served in the 6th Dragoon Guards from 1876 to 1888.

A Victorian 1857 pattern 4th Bengal Cavalry Light Cavalry Officers Sword by E Thurkle, London:, the straight single edged blade with acid etched decoration of a lion passant over 'IV' and 'BL' cipher, also decorated with the initials 'A De. V.A' beneath family crest, makers mark to shoulder as per title, three quarter pierced steel guard with single quillon, wire bound fish skin grip, together with a steel scabbard with double suspension loops and button to throat, blade length 89cm.*Notes- Research shows that the cutler E Thurkle was at Soho from 1876 to 1899 and that this sword was made for A De-Vere Alexander who , during his career in the army serve with the 4th Bengal cavalry from June 1875 to July 1877 and from December 1878 to September 1885. In its present form the sword is of 1896 pattern, however the blade is older and has been re-hilted to comply with the Dress Regulations of 1896.
