Lot 301

M1917/P13 bayonet scabbard and frog, made by Remington in the USA at their Eddystone works, stamped to the left Ricasso 1917 over Remington inside a circle and to the right ricasso with an eagle over 12 (inspectors mark) flaming bomb over US (US Government mark). The Scabbard is a type two and is marked H.E. It also carries the J in a diamond which is the mark for Jewell. Destined to be used by the US forces in WWI but probably unissued, passed to the British home guard during WWII as part of the lend lease agreement and fitted with the British type scabbard (sometimes called the Home Guard type) no British markings, but has the British grips with the two Vertical lines to distinguish it from the P1907. As a US made bayonet it should have a clearance hole. Only about 7% of US made bayonets did not have a clearance hole so this is a very early production. 59.5cm long

US M5A1 bayonet and scabbard, made by Milpar of Columbus, Ohio,Columbus Milpar did not begin in business until 1960 and ran until 1970. In 1961 they were given an order for 190,000 bayonets and it is thought they were stored and used for Military Aid Programs.33cm long

A Fine Lloyd's Patriotic Fund Trafalgar Sword Of £100 Value To Philip Chas. Durham Esq.R, Captain Of H.M.S. DefianceDated 21st Octr., 1805With curved single-edged hollow-ground blade richly etched and gilt against a blued ground (some old loss of finish) with flowers, foliage, entwined dolphins, naval and martial trophies, figures of Britannia and Victory, crowned arms and cypher of George III, the recipient's initials in a starburst above a phoenix and the presentation inscription, stirrup hilt of ormolu, the quillons formed as a fasces, the knuckle-guard as a club of Hercules entwined by a snake, the langets cast with acanthus foliage and naval trophies, the back-piece of the partly chequered ivory grip cast as the skin of the Nemean Lion, in its original foliate engraved scabbard of ormolu decorated with naval medallions on each side cast and chased with figures of Britannia framed by the inscription 'Defiance Nelson Trafalgar 21st Octr. 1805', Hercules with the Hydra, and the Nemean Lion, the open panels cast, pierced and chased with naval trophies on navy blue velvet grounds, the two suspension loops in the form of coiled serpents, the chape with a border of graduated beads, the top edge of the locket signed 'R. Defiance For His Meritorious Services In Contributing To The Signal Victory Obtained Over The Combined Fleets Of France And Spain Off Cape Trafalgar On The 21st Oct.r 1805.'Philip Charles Durham was born in Largo, Fifeshire in 1763 and entered the navy in July 1777 seeing much action in America, the Mediterranean and the West Indies. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1782 and in 1792 with the rank of Commander, he was appointed to the Spitfire. It was at this time that he was awarded the first piece of plate given by Lloyds, valued at 100 guineas and was promoted to post rank. He was appointed to the Anson (46) in 1794. In 1798 after capturing La Loire (46) he obtained the thanks of Parliament and was presented by the Duke of Clarence with his own sword and belt. In 1801, whilst in command of the Endymion (40) he bought home a convoy of 10 Indiamen from St. Helena for which he was awarded by the Court of Directors a piece of plate valued at 500 guineas.In May 1803 he took command of the Defiance (79) and took part in the battle of Trafalgar where he was slightly wounded. He saw further action in the Mediterranean on the Renown (74). He was promoted Rear Admiral in 1810 and in 1813 appointed to the chief command of the Leeward Islands. On his way out he captured two frigates, went on to clear the area of American cruisers and took part in the reduction of Martinique and Guadeloupe. In 1819 he was promoted to Vice-Admiral and to full Admiral in 1830. In 1836 he was appointed Commander-in-Chief at Portsmouth. He was member of Parliament for Queensborough in 1830, and for Devizes between 1835 and 1836. He died in Naples on 2 April 1845. His portrait hangs in the Painted Hall, GreenwichH.M.S. Defiance was built on the Thames and commissioned in 1794; until 1799 she suffered with a number of mutinous crews but subsequently saw much action in the Mediterranean, Copenhagen, Finisterre, Trafalgar, L'Orient and was the ship from which Wellington landed at Coruna. A Caucasian KindjalRussian Silver Marks For 1862With broad double-edged blade tapering sharply to the point and cut with two converging fullers over nearly its entire length on both sides, each fuller on one side of the forte struck with a shaped calligraphic bladesmith's mark, the waisted silver-gilt hilt nielloed with a repeated scale design against a ground of wrigglework, the grip nielloed with a repeated design between imitation wire bindings, in its original leather-covered wooden scabbard backed in silver braid, the locket and deep chape decorated over the outer sides en suite with the hilt, nielloed ring-shaped suspension mount, and spherical terminal 29 cm. blade Footnotes:ProvenanceAcquired in Russia by Florence Farmborough (1887-1978) who first went there in 1908, at the age of 21, as a governess/companion to a family in Kiev. In 1910 she moved to Moscow to teach English to the daughters of a famous heart surgeon. On the outbreak of the Great War in 1914 she qualified as a Red Cross nurse with the Imperial Russian Army, and saw service at both the Galician and the Romanian Fronts. During this time she kept a diary and took pictures with a large plate camera which she would develop and print while encamped with the forces. She returned to England in 1918 and wrote a number of articles for The Times. Her edited diaries highlighting some of her remarkable pictures was published in 1974 as Nurse at the Russian Front. She subsequently published her collection of photographs in Russian Album 1908-1918 in 1979, and was elected a Fellow of the Geographical Society. For many years she worked as a university lecturer in Spain where she was in the thick of the Spanish Civil War including working as a newsreader on Spanish National Radio. She returned to England in time for the Battle of Britain during which time she worked for the Women's Voluntary Service. In 1974 she was the subject of a programme entitled 'English Nurse with the Tsar's Army, and in the BBC television documentary series Yesterday's Witness. She died in 1978 at the age of 91 An old handwritten label attached to the kindjal reads 'Cossack Dagger of Caucasian Silver.
