He entered the Royal Navy as a midshipman in 1793, was commissioned Lieutenant in October 1800 and placed in command of HMS 'Lyra' in 1810. Over the following four years he distinguished himself on the north coast of Spain, providing valuable assistance to Wellington at San Sebastian. He was twice mentioned in dispatches in 1812 and 13. He was promoted to Captain in September 1813, no doubt a cause for celebration in his home town and the presentation of the sword by the Corporation the following month. The six chased silver gilt medallions on the scabbard comprise1) the arms of King's Lynn with a banner above dated 1813 2) Neptune in his chariot 3 & 6) Hercules slaying the Lernaean Hydra 4) a pelican in its piety and 5) a trophy of arms. A very similar sword by the then unidentified maker 'T.P' was presented to Cmdr. John Bull by the passengers of the HM P Packet 'Marlborough' in March 1814. It is illustrated Southwick (L), The Price Guide to Antique Edged Weapons, Woodbridge 1982, fig 308.
