*Scottish Dirk. An Edwardian Scottish dirk (Sgian Dubh) belonging to The Honourable E.O. Campbell, Seaforth Highlanders, the 28.5cm steel blade by S.J. Pillin, Gerrard St, London, etched with the crest of the Seaforth Highlanders, the reverse with E.VII.R. cypher, with the bog oak grip carved with hat and crossed swords and woven grip inset with brass studs, thistle decorated gilt metal mounts and large glass cairngorm to the butt, 42cm overall, in its conforming scabbard with knife and fork with morocco leather presentation case, rust to blade and presentation case (a/f), together with personal letters to family from the trenches, having passed censorship (various dates including 18 August 1916) plus a large monochrome photograph of the recipient in civilian wear dated 1918, 20 x 15.5cm The Honourable Eric Octavius Campbell (1885-1918), educated at Eton, passed into the Army through the Militia, being gazetted to the Seaforth Highlanders on 20 December 1905. At the outbreak of the war he went to France as Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion; he was awarded the D.S.O. on 18 February 1915, and was wounded at St. Julian on 25 April 1915. Campbell was employed as Brigade Major from 3 January to 24 September 1916, his services being rewarded with a Brevet Majority on 3 June 1916. He was in hospital in France towards the end of 1916, and on return to duty in November went to the 2nd Battalion, but resumed the appointment of Brigade Major to the 44th Infantry Brigade on 22 January 1917. Campbell returned to regimental duty on 27 May 1917 and for a short time commanded the 2nd Battalion. On 20 October 1917, he was given command of another battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders, which he retained till the middle of May 1918, when a breakdown in health, due to nearly four years active service, compelled him to go hospital. Campbell arrived home on 25 May, having been reported wounded, but returned to duty immediately, as he was only bruised by a fragment of a shell. In the Gazette of 24 May he was mentioned in despatches for the third time, and a Bar to his D.S.O. was awarded in the Gazette of 3 June, the day before his death. Lieutenant-Colonel the Honourable Campbell died in hospital in London of cerebral haemorrhage on 4 June 1918. (1)

Brass hilt and p[ommel , folding guard with plain finish. The stirrup hilt and pommel partially decorated with swirl designs, wooden grip lacking its wire wrap. 31" tapering blade with light etching and almost full length fuller. Possibly of Continental manufacture, a handsome usable sword. A 19thC Shamshir sword with grips loose and blade shattered in two pieces, with partial scabbard.

A FRENCH ANX1 CAVALRY SWORD. A French Cuirassiers Sword , with the rare hatchet point blade in very clean condition. The blade markings include V for Versailles and AP 'Atelier de Precision, possibly a 2nd Cuirassier's Regiment weapon. The scabbard of the Mk 3 type, issued for use in 1914. The hilt shows signs of use in battle, the marks consistent with deflected points. Several sword cuts are evident to the outer edges, the scabbards were used to deflect an opponents blade.

A FRENCH CAVALRY SWORD ANX1 As issued to the Heavy Cavalry Regiments, dated 1811 the blade with a semi-spear point. Showing field evidence of alteration just prior to Waterloo, with no markings to show the sword was re-issued afterwards. With the rare and little seen Mark 2 Scabbard, marked 5.K.4.64 of heavy construction. When the 1st pattern scabbard was issued to the Heavy Cavalry, its weakness was quickly apparent. General Kellerman had it replaced by heavy scabbards of 2.5mm thickness . They were then quickly replaced by the Mk 3 version, which the Cavalrymen favoured. Originally purchased from an estate sale in the Brecon Beacons.

A FRENCH ANX1 CAVALRY SWORD. With an 1814 dated blade, having correct markings and Mk 3 steel scabbard. The hilt has the original leather and brass wire binding, also signs of having some usage in battle conditions.

With a fully decorated blade of Eastern figures and foiliage, etc. The hilt as traditionally fitted to Kindjal's in horn, 34.1/2" blade of some 3" width tapering to a slim point being 42.1/2" overall length. The chiselled blade on both sides most probably for ceremonial use, the scabbard present in fragile form. Decorated with two Wheels of Justice markings, and similar on the mounts.

Curved double-edged blade measuring 6.5/8", of classical shape. The bullion decorated swordbelt, is lined with geometric patterns of Omani design..

AN OFFICERS SWORD. An 1897 Pattern Officers Sword marked Sanderson Bros & Newbould Ltd of Sheffield. The GV cypher blade has G R Bodington engraved on it, later carried by Major Edward Dickens REME in WW11. With an extremely clean 32,1.2" blade and its brown leather field scabbard and sword knot.

A COMMANDO DAGGER. A Wilkinson marked plated Fairburn-Sykes Commando Dagger, complete with its scabbard. 7" double-edged blade with etched cartouche, headed by the Queens Arms. With By appointment to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 11, Sword Cutlers. The Wilkinson Sword Crest and Made in England, with a ringed grip hilt and straight quillion.

A KRIS WITH IVORY MOUNTS. A Kris from C1930-40's, brought back after WW11 by an Army Officer. The carved Garuda Bird Ivory hilt has a gilt mount, the watered steel straight-edged blade measures 10.1/2". Ivory mounts to the scabbard, 14.1/2" overall length. Please note Ivory Export Laws need to be considered, if bidding from Abroad.

AN OFFICERS SWORD. A crisp 1897 pattern officers sword, complete with its scabbard. The blade and the hilt have the cypher of GV, both in clean and usable/wear condition. The maker or supplier marked as A G Parker & Co Ltd, Birmingham, in a brown leather field scabbard.

AN OFFICERS SWORD & SCABBARD. An officers 1887 pattern Heavy Cavalry Officers sword with 35" slightly-curved blade with Victorian Crown and light decoration. Complete with a brown leather field scabbard, with metal chafe. Steel guard has light rusting inside, the outer shell also has as similar coating.

Lot 26

A LIGHT BRIGADE CHARGERS SWORD & SCABBARD. The 1821/22 pattern Cavalry sword of Capt John Atkins Pickworth, of the 8th Kings Irish Hussars. One of the 600 chargers, immortalized by Lord Tennyson, later to be commissioned and have some 35 years service in the Regiment before retirement. Hon Captain and Knight of Windsor, he died at Windsor Castle in 1901 aged 77 years. The sword has a 35./12" blade with the Regimental Crest and Motto, Smalpage & Son of Maddox St, London as the maker or cutler. With Battle Honours from Leswarree to Central India on the VR cypher blade. His initials with the J entwined with A and P in the forte, are on the exceptionally clean and crisp blade. Complete with a three bar steel hilt and steel scabbard with two hanging loops. John Atkins Pickworth was born in 1824 and enlisted in the 8th Hussars in 1840. He sailed on H M T Medora for the Eastern Campaign on the 27/4/1854. He was in the Recce for Silistria, the battles of Alma, Balaklava, Imkermann and the Tchernays, affairs of Bulganah and McKenzies Farm, siege and fall of Sebastopol. He was awarded the Medal with four clasps, French and Turkish Medals. He was promoted Troop Serjeant the day after taking part in the Charge of the Light Brigade, 26/10/1854. He after a brief period of Home Service sailed for the campaign in India on the 16/10/1857, on St Lawrence an East India Company Ship. By this time he was Regimental Sergeant-Major of the 8th Hussars. During the Campaign he was present at the Capture of Kotah and reoccupation of Chundaree, the Battle of Kota ke Serai and Capture of Gwalior and the action at Boordah, Awarded the Mutiny Medal and Clasp. Appointed Cavalry Depot 28/4/1875, retiring as Hon Captain in April 1878. He was awarded Half Pay and made a Knight of Windsor by Her Majesty on thye same day. He died at Windsor Castle aged 77 years. His Times Obituary reads; He served for upwards of 35 years with the 8th Hussars. He was in the Squadron that charged in and through the enemy camp at Kota-Keseria, where many guns were captured. Twice mentioned in the Records of The Regiment, 'Having distinguished himself by his steadiness and coolness in keeping the men together and the squadron unbroken after the death of his officers in The Charge of The Light Brigade at Balaklava. Again in the Indian Mutiny at Kote-Keserai when owing to the death of hisd officer, he commanded the troop during the retreat. Awarded the vacant commission on Lt Reilly's death in action. Recommended for a Victoria Cross, according to regimental sources. Photographs and further details are available on many websites. See Illustration

Issued to Troopers with a four bar brass hilt with various Regimental/Issue markings. K B L stamp marks on the dual-fullered 37.1/2" blade, Imp du Klugenthal on the back edge, complete with a scabbard.

Battle Honours on the slim 32,1/2" blade are China, Mahidpoor and Ava, on the reverse side is the Rampant Lion . Also on the banners is etched Madras 36th Rifles, a bugle and a Dragon or Griffin. A LIGHT CAVALRY OFFICERS SWORD. A 1796 Light Cavalry pattern variant sword, with pipeback blade of falchion form. Clean 31.1/2" curved blade with 10" spearpoint tip, making it an attractive fighting sword. Steel three bar hilt with swept forward ring quillion, completed by three grip decorations in steel over ray skin finish. Steel scabbard with two hanging rings, some dents evident. See Illustration

A K O S BORDERERS BROADSWORD & SCABBARD. A Victorian Kings Own Scottish Borderers Broadsword with E Thurkle & Sons, Denmark St, Soho, London on the forte. The 33" double-edged blade is decorated with thistles VR and other patterns. On the centre of the blade is Nisi Dominus Trustra. (without the Lord everything is in vain ) Nec Aspera Terrant (Hardships do not deter us) below a Castle and then a Horse respectively. Kings Own Scottish Borderers below a Victorian Crown. Battle Honours from Egypt, Minden, etc up to 1878-80. Full dress hilt with red inner lining and red pommel fringe, steel pierced outer guard in its steel scabbard. See Illustration.

THE MAMELUKE OF GENERAL SIR THOMAS BRADFORD GCB GCH. The Mameluke sword of General Sir Thomas Bradford GCB and GCH, who served under Wellington, during the Peninsula War. Plain Ivory grips with steel mounts and the owners etched details on the scabbard. 32" long curved blade, with full length broad fullers. Marked Solingen on the spine, in very clean condition overall. The scabbard of black leather and decorative steel mounts, has the following details etched at the bottom hanger mount. 'Worn by General Sir Thomas Bradford GCB-GCH during the Peninsular War'. Lt Colonel of the 34th & 82nd Regiments of Foot. Brigade and Division Commander Peninsular War, 1810-14. He was awarded the Army Gold Medal with one clasp. Born in 1777 he was commissioned into the 4th Kings Own regiment in 1793, in 1795 promoted Major into the Loyal Nottinghamshire Fencibles. He served with his Regiment in the Suppression of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Promoted Colonel in 1806, he took part in the Buenos Aeries Expedition. He then served under General Moore and later Wellington from 1808 until 1814. Awarded the Grand Cross of the Bath and Grand Cross of Hannover. He took part in the Battles of Vimeiro 1808, Corrunna 1809, Salamanca 1812. Later promoted Lt General commanding a Portugese Division at Vittoria, San Sebastian and Nive. He was wounded at Bayonne in 1814, returning to the UK to recover his health. Taking up a Staff Appointment as Northern District Occupation of France, 7th Division 1815-17. Thence Forces in Scotland 1819, Commander in Chief of Troops Bombay, before returning to the UK in 1829. He became Colonel of the 30th Foot Cambridgeshire Regt, in 1829. His wife Mary died at sea, on her return from India in February 1830. He had issue and died in Eaton Square London, in 1853. The older brother of Sir Henry Bradford, severley wounded at the Battle of Waterloo 1815. The sword has remained in a private collection for many years. It was later re-united with his brothers Mameluke, several years ago. See Illustration

THE MAMELUKE OF SIR H H BRADFORD KCB DOW RCD AT WATERLOO. Sir Henry Bradford's Mameluke and steel scabbard, carried by the gallant officer who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Waterloo. Ivory chequered grip with gilt mounts, the blade of 28" length with Arabic panel. A true fighting blade, later mounted by a Sword Maker to suit Sir Henry's taste. The steel scabbard with two loop mounts, etched at the throat with; 'Worn by Lt Colonel Sir Henry Bradford KCB, During the Peninsula War and at Battle of Waterloo when he was mortally wounded. Several years ago the sword was re-united with that of his eldest brother, Sir Thomas Bradford GCB GCH. Lt Colonel Sir Henry Hollis Bradford was the third and youngest son of Thomas and Elizabeth Bradford of Woodlands nr Doncaster. Later resided at Ashdown Park, Sussex. Ensign without purchase in the 4th Foot Guards 6/11/1801. Purchased at Lieutenancy in January 1801. Appointed A D C to the Earl of Chatham, served in the Peninsular War. Including Battles at Corunna, Salamanca, Vittoria, The Pyrenees, Nivelle, Orthes and Toulouse. At the Battle of Waterloo as Quarter Master General 1st Regt of Foot Guards, where he was mortally wounded. He died in France at Vacherie on the 7th December 1816. Buried at Storrington Church Sussex. Awarded the Dutch Order of William and the Russian Order of St Vladimar. See Illustration

A 19thC MAMELUKE BY BAKER & SON. An attractive Mameluke sword with gilt chevron decoration, on the 31.1/4" curved blade. The royal cypher and GR are on the blade, also the royal coat of arms. together with Baker & Son 24 Bedford St, Covent Garden, London. amid the chevrons are damascene highlighting and 'Improved for Service' markings. The scabbard of brass has two rope design hanging loops, black grips and a sword knot present. See Illustration

CASED COURT DRESS & SWORD HAT, etc. A Japanned tin case containing the formal dress of two generations of the same family. Shoes and cased buckles, matching the dress buttons and formal hats. Lace cuffs and Velvet in very good condition are the materials used to make the Coatee, breeches etc. The tin has a brass label, inscribed R L Hurst. Colonel Richard Lumley Hurst was a Barrister and the son of Sir Cecil Hurst KCB, GCMG. (Born 28/10/1870 who died 27/3/1963) His Portrait hangs in Horsham Museum. He spent much of his Legal Career, as President in the Hague. See Who Was Who. Colonel R L Hurst 4th Battalion R Sussex Regt TA, born in 1904 he died in 1962. (Wykhamist) Also served in the British Army Legal Department, during and after WW11. A Court Sword with 32" rapier shape blade, plated hilt with pierced oval guard and attached guard chain. Complete with its black leather and plated mounts scabbard, also outer carrycase.

Marked with Defence and not Defiance in one scroll, Peace with honour on the other side also Howell London on the ornate blade.

The Hilt also has the fouled anchor and both are of the Kings Crown above. The scabbard is clean and has brass mounts, with an outer carrycase and two Officers Naval Dress Belts. See Illustration

AN OFFICERS 1912 PATTERN CAVALRY SWORD. An Officers 1912 pattern cavalry sword, complete with field scabbard and swordknot. Blade number 15072, carried by Major A B B Moore of the 6th Duke of Connaught's Lancers, (Watsons Horse) Indian Army. Marked Army & Navy Cooperative Society on the 35" blade, with some rust patches evident. Brown leather field scabbard and swordknot, with its outer carrycase. The hilt and guard show very little damage to the plating or any notable rusting on the inside. 2/ Lt 1931 Indian Army 1932. Lt in 1933 Capt in 1939 Major in 1942 Alick Bartley Brady Moore born 16/6/1910. ADC to his Excellency the Viceroy of India 6/4/1938 to 7/1/1939. The Regiment was dismounted and became Armoured Cars Indian Division(Recce) in Italy between 1943-45
