Crown mark to the ricasso, remnants of number to the other side and 'U' to the crossguard.
Two early 20th century African arm daggers to include; Sudanese Mahdi Dervish Arm Dagger with leather clad shaped hilt, double edges blade along with leather scabbard and a Manding Mandinka tribe arm dagger of similar form having a leather clad and grass weaved hilt, double edged blade and leather scabbard with tassel end. Measures; 38cm overall.
An incredible local interest WWII Second World War 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment collection of items. All relating to a Ronald ' Roy ' Charles Harris. Harris joined the First Paras and later the Eleventh SAS. From his obituary (included with the sale): ' Roy came from a large family...(and) he set up the Kingswood firm 'Harris Brothers' with his two brothers...before he started the family firm he served his country in the Second World War... (he) joined as a soldier of the First Paras and Eleventh SAS and was in action in Europe. In 1942 when parachuting into Sicily, Roy was injured when the Germans opened fire as they came down. Roy was captured and taken prisoner of war where he spent long periods in solitary confinement which affected his health...'. Included within the lot is: - Harris' own ' No.2 Commando 11th SAS 1st Parachute Battalion ' patch- Harris' Soldier Service Book - listing his Army Number as 4625961- Several photographs of Harris (and his battalion) - x3 framed, one unframed. - Harris' original Parachute Battalion beret, with parachute regiment badge to front.- An Air Letter from Harris sent home to Bristol. Dated 29.4.1943, the letter reads, in part: '...it won't be long now before North Africa is ours... the last few days have been very hot, and we have been sun-bathing - most of the lads are black! Will you let me know if the papers in England said anything about the 'Parachute' fighting in this country - I should like to know they did ' and followed by more family related sentiments- Two copies of Prisoner Of War camp ' Punishment ' notices - dated August 17th 1944 which lists Harris and another prisoner. For escaping the camp, they are given ' close arrest for a term of 7 days ' (solitary confinement). Written in German and English. - Harris' own Fairbairn Sykes British Commando dagger - within it's original leather and steel scabbard. - Harris' SAS / Commando issue Knuckle Duster - with ministry markings.- Several effects relating to a ' 1st Para Battalion 11th SAS Reunion Dance ' on March 29th 1947 at The Angel Hotel, Knutsford '. Including an original (fragile) poster, ticket, press photograph, and newspaper extract from the event ' Red Devils meet again! '.- A No.2 Commando 11th SAS 1st Parachute Battalion Reunion Dinner menu from 1985..and various other personal (and later effects) including a Union Flag, Matador throwing knife, and various Parachute Regiment related mementos.An interesting and important collection of WWII militaria.
Two antique 19th century French infantry Chassepot / Gras rifle bayonets to include; Model 1883 having a shaped wooden and brass hilt, steel crossguard with muzzle hole and penny end scroll, T-section blade transitioning into a double edged tip with engraving to the top section along with it's steel scabbard. The other bayonet being Model 1873 brass ribbed hilt, steel crossguard with damaged muzzle hole and penny end scroll, T-section fullered recurve blade transitioning into a double edged tip along with it's steel scabbard. Measures; 71cm.
