A GERMAN 2ND WORLD WAR PERIOD NAVAL OFFICERS DAGGER having Eagle and Swastika Pommel wrythen wire bound white grip etched steel 10"blade marked "Original Eickhorn Solingen" and gilded scabbard with oak leaf bands and lightning flashes. Also silver tassel and binding and two black suspension straps with gilt metal mounts and clips.
LUCY ELLEN MARK (1858-1931), Still life - a Chinese vase of flowers, lustre dishes and a dagger and scabbard on a ledge, signed and dated 1920, oil on canvas, 23" x 19 1/2". This lot is sold together with short biographical printed history and photograph of the artist who attended the Slade School in 1885 and exhibited twice at the Royal Academy and many other well known galleries until around 1923.
A French Cuirassier sword dated 1815, straight double fullered blade 38”, marked “M..(unclear) Rle du Klingenthal, Mars 1815” on the backstrap with stamps at forte, regulation brass hilt with knucklebow and 3 side bars, the knucklebow stamped 371, brass pommel, ribbed leather grip, in its steel scabbard. A fine George V 1854 pattern sword of the Grenadier Guards, straight, fullered blade 32”, etched with crowned GVR cypher, crowned regimental badge, 34 battle honours in scrolls, “Tangier 1684” to “France & Flanders 1914-18”, owner’s crest and motto “Courage a la Mort” and initials “RLH”, in frosted panels, regulation plated hilt incorporating grenade with GR cypher on the ball, wirebound fishskin grip, in its leather field service scabbard. A George V 1897 pattern infantry officer’s presentation sword, straight fullered blade 32”, by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, numbered 55661 on backstrap, etched with crowned Royal Arms, GVR cypher, wreath and “Presented to Capt J Matthews MC, 15th Bn South Lancashire Regt as a Mark of Esteem from the Officers and Men “Y” Division, Metropolitan Police, July 1918”, regulation plated steel guard incorporating GVR cypher, wirebound fishskin covered grip, in its leather field service scabbard. An Edward VII presentation light cavalry type sword for best swordsman, straight fullered blade 35” by Robt Mole & Sons, Birmingham, Makers to the War and India Offices, numbered M4652 on the backstrap, and etched with crowned ERVII cypher and “Presented by Lt Col Sir William Baird, Bart, to Sergt John E B Cowper, D Squadron, Lothians and Berwickshire Imperial Yeomanry, as Best Swordsman in the Regiment at Annual Training, July 1902” heavy triple bar silver plated hilt, the bars formed as oak sprays, wirebound sharksking grip, ornamental backstrap and pommel with yeomanry helmet and oak leaves, in its plated scabbard. Very Good Condition, retaining most original finish overall (light bubbling to scabbard plating) Plate 28
A good post 1902 officer’s presentation sword of the Royal Horse Guards, straight fullered blade 37” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, numbered 44349 (1913) on backstrap, etched with crowned GVR cypher, crowned RHG monogram with 8 battle honour scrolls, owner’s monogram C.G.V and “C.G.Vaughan from the Commandant and Officers of the Permanent Staff, Cavalry School, Saugor 1913” regulation plated hilt with applied brass design incorporating crowned RHG monogram, studs and twirls, buff leather liner, wirebound fishskin grip, in its plated scabbard with brass ornamental chape and fluted bands with hanging rings. Very Good Condition Plate 28. Note: C. G. Vaughan was appointed Hon Lieutenant and Riding Master to the Royal Horse Guards, 22nd October 1913. Good biographical details of service sold with the lot, also a photograph of Riding Master Vaughan from the Household Brigade Magazine and a copy from Wilkinson Sword Register of the sword details.
A good Elizabeth II Royal Air Force officer’s sword, straight fullered blade 32½” by Wilkinson Sword Ltd, no 92852 on backstrap, etched with crowned Royal Arms and crown and eagle badge within foliate blank scroll panels, heavy gilt half basket hilt incorporating crowned ERII cypher and crown over eagle badge, wirebound sharkskin grip, eagle’s head pommel and backstrap, gilt and sky blue dress knot, in its gilt mounted leather scabbard. Near Mint Condition (a few tiny marks to blade edge at forte) Plate 28
A Victorian field officer’s broadsword of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, plated, double edged claymore blade 33” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, numbered 28419 (1887) on backstrap, etched with crowned VR cypher, regimental badge, “Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders” and owner’s crest and motto “Stand Sure” within thistle scrolled panels, plated honeysuckle pattern hilt with buff leather backed scarlet cloth and blue silk liner with tassels, wirebound fishskin grip, in its plated scabbard. Very Good Condition (scabbard replated, with a few dents, hilt liner replaced) Plate 28
A late Victorian officer’s 1821 pattern sword of The 17th Lancers, faintly curved blade 34½” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, numbered 38144 (1900) on backstrap, etched with crowned VR cypher, wreath, regimental badge “17 Duke of Cambridge’s Own Lancers” and owner’s name R W V Bruce, within angular scrolled panels, plated scroll pattern bowl guard, wirebound diced composition grips, in its plated scabbard. Good Condition (blade repolished over pitting) Plate 28. Note: Robert William Vesey Bruce was commissioned in 1900, served throughout the Boer War, was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Queen’s medal with 4 clasps. Promoted Captain in 1908, he served in WWI, became Major in 1916 and retired on half pay at the end of the war.
A good scarce Volunteer officer’s Brunswick sword bayonet, slightly curved, single edged blade 24” etched with panels of foliage and “Reilly, New Oxford St, London”, standard pattern brass hilt with ribbed grip and down turned quillons, in its brass mounted leather scabbard. Clean Condition (some scratches and small stains to blade, slight wear to scabbard leather). Plate 29
A small silver hilted smallsword, c 1740, blade 25½” of slightly colichemarde hollow triangular form with brass inlaid floral panel, the simple hilt of classic form with some embossed and punched decoration, silver wire bound grip, in a later vellum covered scabbard with German silver mounts and 2 hanging rings. A silver mounted hanger, c 1760, of the type favoured by naval officers, slightly curved blade 25”, with central fuller, narrow back fuller and double edged point, pierced, wavy edged silver knucklebow incorporating a heart, lion’s head pommel, green stained, diagonally fluted ivory grip, in its silver mounted tooled (faint) leather scabbard. Good Condition Plate 29
A good quality silver hilted smallsword, made for a naval gentleman, blade 32¾” of hollow triangular section, etched on each side with a classical figure and “Scipio”, the hilt pierced and chased with trophies, drums, lion mask on pommel, and on the shellguard a head of Neptune with trident, anchor, dragon, flags etc, the knucklebow with London hallmark for 1757, the grip bound with twisted silver wire and tape, in a later scabbard with German silver mounts and repaired chape.
