An Exceptional and Fine Gilt Mounted Anglo-Indian Sabre Made for Lord Evelyn Stuart, Colonel in His Majesty`s Army, Circa 1780-1800, with a 80cm curved hollow-ground blade, back-edged towards the clip-point, etched with panels, inscribed `Sacred To H ---A Victory & Glory` gilt hilt comprising a pair of short quillons chiselled with tiger heads on the terminals, a pair of langets decorated with foliage and tiger heads, with stylised tiger-head pommel, with ruby eyes and open mouth bearing teeth and tongue, with chained loop to quillon end, in its engraved gilt brass covered wooden scabbard, with inscribed 3cm half-moon ivory tag inscribed in ink `Lord Evelyn Stuart - Colonel in H.M. Army` 96cm overall. Provenance: Colonel Lord Evelyn Stuart (7th May 1773 - 16th August 1842), second son of John Stuart, 1st Marquess of Bute, son of Prime Minister John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, thence by descent.

A Fine English Cut-Steel Small-Sword, Circa 1790-1800 by William Gray of Bond Street, London, with slender tapering hollow-triangular blade etched and gilt with scrolls, on a blued panel, the hilt formed with burnished steel beads cut in imitation of brilliants, including oval shell-guard formed of a tapering arrangement of beads radiating from the centre, knuckle-guard cut with beadwork borders in the centre framing a central flowerhead flanked by further beadwork, and urn-shaped pommel, in its original shagreen-covered wooden scabbard with burnished steel mounts including signed locket, remaining in fine condition throughout, complete with original red leather hilt cover, 106cm overall. William Gray (1764-1846) succeeded his father, Robert Gray, at 13 New Bond Street. He is recorded as Goldsmith, Jewellery and Cutler to their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and the Duke of York in 1790. See L. Southwick 2001, pp. 126-127. A Naval Officer`s Bi-corn Hat, Belt and Epaulettes by Gieves Matthews & Seagrove Ltd. in their velvet lined japanned tin box, the lid bearing brass plaque inscribed ` H. D. Collins R.N.`, together with related paperwork.
