This sword was purchased at the Sotheby's Stokesay Court auction in September of 1994 as lot 1233, however the illustrations and descriptions in the catalogue are transposed and the illustration is numbered 1230, the catalogue also erroneously mentions a maker's plate. Various swords sold alongside related to Lt. General Sir William Russell of the 7th Hussars, though this sword is possibly too early to have been his but his mother was the daughter of Major-General James Dodington Sherwood of the East India (Bengal) Artillery, a possibility? There is also a reference to some time spent with the East India Company Service which may account for Lot 1240 a Georgian Naval Officer's sword also purchased at this sale and appearing as lot XX in this catalogue. Brigadier General John Rotton also resided at Stokesay but again this sword would be too early.
