Lot 149
A sword by A & E Horster, one other sword, two carbine bayonets and a Remington 1907 pattern bayonet, stamped 1913 CONDITION REPORTS Swords very rusted, wear, knocks, grips very deteriorated and with losses, metal fitments appear to have been repainted. Bayonets all with wear and scuffs, some knocks and bumps, some rusting and pitting, two of scabbards appear to have fairly new leather replacements, and possibly some replacement metal fittings. The other leather scabbard is more worn and bears a mark/stamp (see photos), metal attachements/pins to scabbard appear similar to those on the other scabbards, so not not whether these are original.
Lot 149B
An 1854 pattern Welsh Guards officer's sword by Wilkinson, in leather scabbard CONDITION REPORTS Blade length approx 81.5cm. There does not appear to be a number to the blade, but the knuckle guard has "RA 973-6885 1977" scratched into it, and the metal mount to the scabbard is inscribed "WS 96 127 9993". Overall some light general wear and a few scuffs and knocks to the guard, but generally appears in tidy condition.

THESSALY, Ainianes. Mid 1st century BC. AR Hemidrachm (16mm, 2.29 g, 12h). Derkias, magistrate. Head of Zeus left, wearing laurel wreath; ??????S behind / Phemios, naked but for chlamys draped over his left arm and belt holding a short sword in a scabbard, standing right in throwing stance, preparing to hurl javelin in right hand and holding his petasos as if it were a small shield with his left; ??????O[?] to left, monogram to lower right. BCD Thessaly II 47.4 (same dies); Rhousopoulos 1238 (same dies). Good VF, die break on reverse. Very rare.

Crawford 412/1 (symbols 90); Sydenham 915; cf. Kestner 3394-3406 (unlisted symbols); BMCRR Rome 3490 (symbols 90); Roscia 3; RBW 1491-2 var. (symbols). Good VF, cabinet tone, underlying luster. A Vic naval dirk, SE blade 18”, by Walton, Outfitter, Gosport, etched overall with crowned VR cypher and crowned fouled anchor in scrolled panels, gilt hilt, with acorn finials to S shaped crossguard, lion’s head pommel and backstrap, wirebound (AF) sharkskin grip, with catch, in its leather scabbard (seam stitching AF) with brass mounts and 2 rings; with an RN officer’s leather waistbelt, slings and good gilt KC WBC. A Vic RN officer’s sword, slightly curved, fullered blade 28½”, by Kenning Little Britain London (faint) and etched with nicely detailed R Arms, supporters and motto on one side, and crowned fouled anchor on the other, in scrolled panels, regulation brass hilt incorporating crowned fouled anchor with turn down portion which locks to scabbard, wirebound sharkskin grip, in its leather scabbard with scroll panel engraved locket, middle band and chape, and 2 rings. GC (some wear, minor pitting marks to blade, more pronounced towards point). Plate 7

A Geo light company field officer’s sword, curved, flat blade 27”, DE at point, etched (faint) with crowned R Arms, crowned GR cypher and trophies (?) in scroll panels, brass hilt, the slotted guard with 4 loops on each side into crowned GR cypher and fluted knucklebow, flattened lion’s head pommel and facetted backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its brass (dented) scabbard with 2 rings, and a later gilt and crimson lace sword knot. Basically GC (worn overall).

GC, the blade clean and sharpened for service (minor scabbard and hilt pitting). Plate 7

A late Vic officer’s sword of The Royal Artillery, almost straight blade 34”, by Wilkinson, no 36157 (for 1898) on backstrap, etched with crowned R Arms, VR in wreath with “Ubique” and cannon, winged lightning, and owner’s initials “ALT”, in scrolled panels, regulation triple bar hilt with chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip in its leather FS scabbard (tip AF). Basically GC (heavy rust patch to blade centre, hilt dull). .
