A RARE WORLD WAR I MACHINE GUNNER'S 'WELSH KNIFE' OF THE 9TH BATTALION, ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS, CIRCA 1917-18 entirely of steel, or regulation type, with broad leaf-shaped blade, stepped folding circular guard locking into the forte, plain tang with a portion of cord binding, sharpened pommel, and original canvas-covered leather scabbard with belt loop, 59.8 cm Provenance Herbert George Davis (1883-1967), who was in service with the Howard de Walden family before and after World War I.Thence by descent. Allegedly based on an ancient Welsh weapon (later proved not to be the case), the "Welsh Knife" was designed by the sculptor and armourer Felix Joubert in 1916. A limited number were made by the Wilkinson Sword Company at the behest of Lord Howard de Walden who commanded the Battalion between September and December 1917. A memorandum of 27 January 1920 in the Imperial War Museum states "9th Batt'n. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. This battalion made use of a knife with which all machine gunners and bombers were always equipped. Every member of a raiding party was so armed and in one raid on the Messines Ridge two days before the battle of Messines they were used with conspicuous success. They were provided by Lord Howard de Walden and were a replica of a weapon used by Ancient Welsh tribes. They were double-edged, but were intended more for bayonetting than cutting."

A VICTORIAN 1845 PATTERN INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD BY WILKINSON, NO. 23512 FOR 1880 of regulation type, with etched blade decorated with scrolls, the crowned Royal cypher and the maker's details, brass hilt, wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, in its brass scabbard and in good to fine condition throughout, 83.5 cm blade This sword belonged to Lt. Col. Boyd Francis Alexander of the Rifle Brigade. He served with the Rifle Brigade during the Indian Mutiny fighting at the Battle of Cawnpore (1857), the capture of Lucknow, and led the storming party on the fort at Birwah. He was wounded and mentioned in dispatches. His son, Lieutenant Boyd Alexander, also of the Rifle Brigade (who perhaps carried this sword as well) gained fame as an explorer and ornithologist. He was a member of the expedition to travel by boat from Niger to the Nile, exploring Lake Chad in 1904. His account was published and he was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society.

A U.S. Garand M1 Bayonet, one side of the fullered blade stamped S.W.I. with a US flaming grenade, 1943, with ribbed black plastic grip scales and brown plastic scabbard marked VP over 11, with steel locket stamped with a US flaming grenade and with wire clip; a Second World War German M1884/98 Knife Bayonet, the blade stamped cof/44 to one side of the ricasso, the opposing side stamped 4779, the pommel bearing traces of a waffenampt mark, with a steel scabbard marked CARL EICKHORN 1938 and numbered 7324; a Swiss SIG M1957 Bayonet, with black plastic scabbard; a Danish M1889 Bayonet, the fullered blade stamped RKV/K∅BVN and with crowned 11 to the bolster, one side of the pommel stamped 46 B.531, the opposing side stamped 75395, lacks scabbard (4)1 - Rust pitting to hilt and scabbard mounts. 2 - Grinding marks to blade, pommel and scabbard with deep rust pitting, scabbard with numerous dents. 3 - Scuffing to plastic pommel and scabbard. 3 - Black patching and pitting to metalwork, bruising to wood grip scales, lacks scabbard.

An Imperial Russian Model 1881 Type Shashka, the 80.5cm single edge steel blade with two narrow fullers to the back edge, one side of the blade engraved with the Russian double headed eagle, the opposing side with two cyrillic marks at the ricasso, the brass stirrup hilt with ring pierced downward scroll quillon, diagonally ribbed ebony grip and brass mounted black leather scabbard, 95cmFootnote : - The vendor's grandfather was a Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Reserve in the First World War, working with the White Russians to protect supplies falling into German or Bolshevik hands. The Royal Navy seized the Russian cruiser Askold from the Bolsheviks in Kola Bay in 1918. The cruiser was then commissioned as HMS Glory IV (nicknamed Packet of Woodbines due to its five very thin funnels). The aforementioned Lieutenant was on board the ship from 19th November 1918 until 30th April 1919, and acquired the sword at this time.
