A RARE SIAMESE (THAI) GOLD-MOUNTED SWORD (DHAB) IN THE JAPANESE TASTE, FOR PRESENTATION TO A WESTERN DIGNITARY, THIRD QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY with slightly curved pattern-welded blade fitted with silver habaki style collar at its base, circular sword guard formed in imitation of a tsuba on a soft metal core encased with gold chased with a pair of birds inhabiting a garland of flowers and foliage, wooden grip encased in sheet gold punched in imitation of sharkskin, bound with ribbon of woven blued thread enriched with silver and gold, a pair of menuki style charms, fitted at the top and bottom with chased gold mounts (previously enriched with stones), the hilt peg and top of the pommel mount missing), in its red-lacquered wooden scabbard fitted with a chased gold mount top and bottom, each set with numerous red pastes (losses), two further mounts including a soritsuno style hook decorated en suite, complete with its accompanying knife with matching grip, in its silk-lined case, perhaps the original 52.7 cm; 20 ¾ in blade A very similar sword was presented on 9th March 1859 by King Mongkut of Siam (also called Phrachomklao, posthumous name Rama IV, 1804-68) to James Buchanan, President of the United States (president 1857-61) and is preserved in the Smithsonian Museum, Washington (Acc. No. 266032). King Mongkut was a free-thinking scholar and scientist having been a monk for twenty-seven years prior to his accession to the throne. His familiarity with Western ideas was of importance in strengthening his country's relationship with the West and a number of new treaties were signed during the early years of his reign. A CAUCASIAN SWORD (SHASHQA), DATED 1315 AH (CIRCA 1897/8) with curved blade double-edged towards the point, formed with two narrow and a broad near full length fuller and with a lengthy calligraphic inscription on each face, struck with the bladesmith's mark on one face at the forte, silver hilt chased and traditional foliage against a punched ground enriched with niello, including characteristic eared pommel, in its leather-covered wooden scabbard with large mounts decorated en suite with the hilt, comprising locket with a tughra on the front (illegible) and signed 'amal-i khachir urfa 1315' (Work of Khachir, Urfa 1315, 1897-8 AD),and dated in a cartouche on the reverse, middle band, chape decorated with scrolling foliage issuant from a vase and two rings for suspension 81.5 cm; 32 1/8 in blade The inscriptions on the blade are from Qur'an 48:1 and the phrase: madad ya haydar-karar. "Help O Haydar Karar (i.e. 'Ali)" and: la ilah illa allah wahdahu la sharik lahu muhammad rasul allah "There is no god but God alone, He has no partner. Muhammad is the Messenger of God" It is likely that the maker, Khachir, is of Armenian origin.
