Lot 305

A fine William and Mary or Queen Anne carved limewood wall trophy emblematic of the office of the Lord Mayor of London, circa 1700, possibly from the workshop of Grinling Gibbons for the Mercers’ Company, the central beaver fur hat crossed by a sword with guilloche carved scabbard and an ornate sceptre with coronet finial and lobed and waisted terminal, later mounted onto a shaped oak backplate, 45cm high, 115cm wide overall. The materials, style, format, construction and workmanship of this fabulous carving are all consistent with a date of late 17th/early 18th century and the calibre of the carving puts the trophy within reach of Grinling Gibbons. Some limited restorations to the carving were undertaken by David Luard who has worked on many of the best known of Grinling Gibbons’ surviving carvings and he has concurred that the present carving is a good candidate for a Gibbons attribution. Restoration stopped before any work became conjectural. It is thought that the “Chain of Esses” may have originally continued up and over the top of the beaver skin hat with perhaps the portcullis medallion hanging at the front of the hat. If this conjecture is correct, this centre-piece which would have been extremely delicate and finely carved has been lost. The trophy would have been displayed at height, possibly above a doorway or chimneypiece, which explains the visual trick employed where the bottom half and top half of the sword and sceptre repectively do not line up. Such adjustments and aids to perspective are evident in Gibbons’ work.
