AN 1821 PATTERN LIGHT CAVALRY OFFICER'S SWORD TO THE OXFORDSHIRE YEOMANRY CAVALRY, 89cm blade by Wilkinson, serial no. 27915 for 1887, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned VR cyphers and maker's panel, regulation three-bar steel hilt, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its field service scabbard, complete with bag. Made for Captain Cecil William Boyle (1853-1900), born Westminster, London 16th March 1853, educated Clifton College and University College, Oxford. Played cricket and rugby for his college and later internationally. Joined the Oxfordshire Hussars, (the same regiment as Winston Churchill), before being appointed Lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry. Served in the Boer War, taking thirty of his own horses to Africa with him. Killed fighting against French volunteers at Boshof, 5th April 1900, the first member of the Imperial Yeomanry to be killed in action.

THE SWORD AND HEADDRESS OF MAJOR JOHN WILLIAM BROOKE TINDALL 3RD BATTALION THE 7TH RAJPUT REGIMENT, 82cm blade by Wilkinson, serial no. 60417 for 1926, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned Royal arms, GRI cyphers and owner's initials J.W.B.T, regulation pierced steel hilt, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its field service scabbard, complete with knot, bag, 2 x plated scabbards, spare field service scabbard, worn swagger stick and a further plated 7th Rajput Regiment example, together with two hat tins containing, the first containing an Officer's peaked cap with canvas cover, badge to the VII RAJPUT REGIMENT, inter-war pith helmet of "Bombay Bowler" type by Asquith & Lord, another "The Conforma" and a quilted or "Cawnpore Tent" example, the second tin containing leather gaiters, khaki linen trousers, white linen mess jacket and waistcoat, white pith helmet and a khaki pith helmet with cloth divisional badge. Assorted rank pips and crowns, regimental buttons, three pairs of shoulder titles or pagri badges - 7 RAJPUT and a pair of officer's white metal Katar dagger collar badges to the 7th Rajput, three white metal Tyndale family crest plaid brooches and a white metal elephant charm. Major J. W. B. Tindall of the 3/7th Rajput Regiment was killed on operations, by a sniper, in the Khaisora Valley in September 1936. (Parcel)

A CLEAN 18TH CENTURY PINCH OF SNUFF BASKET HILTED BACK SWORD, 91.5cm clean fullered blade retaining most of its original polish, characteristic hilt composed of flattened round bars forming five and a half full panels of crosses with foliate vertical terminals and with a vacant rein panel, flattened half bun-shaped pommel, wire bound fishskin grip with Turk's heads, contained in its steel scabbard engraved with the maker's name J. Read & Sons. See British Basket-Hilted Swords by Cyril Mazansky pg 171-174. The term "Pinch of Snuff" derives from a series of mid 18th Century portraits of officer's carrying swords with similar hilts, one such portrait entitled "A Pinch of Snuff" by Delacour depicts Malcolm Macpherson of Phoness who fought with the 78th Regiment as a Volunteer.
