The leather scabbard has a stitched raided seam to the reverse, and is mounted with a brass chape and throat, the latter with a rectangular suspension loop. No makers mark present, but there there is a punched name to the cross guard (former owner?), and a long number. The brass throat on the scabbard is also stamped with the number 285. The sword has possible been used for reenactment purposes in the past, hence the punched naming. Approximately 64cm in scabbard, blade length 47.8cm. Condition: generally good. Some patina and tarnishing to the handle. The blade shows a little dark spotting and grease staining in places, plus some track lines from withdrawing it from its scabbard. The leather scabbard remains in good condition, with just normal tarnishing to the brass mount.

The leather on the scabbard has an embossed mark, but its faint and impossible to read properly. Approximately 57.5cm in its scabbard, blade length 43cm. Condition: generally good. Some normal service and age wear, with light contact marks to the wood grips and metal parts. The button release catch on the pommel works as it should. Clean blade with limited signs of use.

Lot 156

A WW1 era Imperial German M84/98 Mauser bayonet by Gottlieb Hammesfahr Solingen Foche. With wooden slab grips, secured by 2 rivets, and a birds beak pommel with button release catch. Approximately 40.5cm in scabbard, blade length 25.2cm. Condition: generally good. Some normal age and service wear. A little mottling to the blade in places, and some minor track lines. The wooden grips are much darkened with age, and one side has a historic chip to the wood. A little denting to the scabbard, plus a little pitting in places. Lot 177

A 20th century reproduction of a variation of the rare Hungarian Royal Air Force Dagger. Featuring a ribbed grip and cast eagle head pommel. The cross guard is shaped as an eagle in flight, with the reverse side having the push button blade release catch. Floriated etched double edged blade, which is of flattened diamond form, with a gilt Hungarian royal arms to one side, and an impressed royal arms mark to the ricasso area on one side. Complete with a profusely decorated plated scabbard, with foliage designs, a stand of arms, oak leaves, and an applied enamelled Hungarian coat of arms to the centre. The scabbard has 2 suspension rings to one edge, for adding dagger straps. The age of this piece is difficult to ascertain, as a reproduction it could still be approaching 40 or 50 years old. Approximately 42.1cm in its scabbard, blade length 28.7cm. Condition: generally good The piece exhibits a little sign of some age, with a little loss of plating to the scabbard, contact marks, rubbing to the design in places etc, although some of this may have been artificially applied. The enamel coat of arms has a a pin head sized hole to one size but is otherwise intact. The piece otherwise remains in good condition, with no dents or splits, and a clean blade.

Lot 174

A trio of bayonets, to included a Swedish M1896 bayonet with scabbard, an Indian made No.1 MKII* sword bayonet dated November 1944, and a reproduction pre-1937 Japanese Arisaka Type 30 bayonet with scabbard. Notes: the Swedish bayonet has the usual all steel construction, with the scabbard retaining its frog stud. The No.1 MKII bayonet carries the GRI mark, and the Indian RFI mark at the ricasso (scabbard absent). This late war example is of crude construction, with the slab grips being flat and rectangular, and the pommel being of squared off form. The cross guard is stamped ‘DP’ for Drill Purpose. The blade lack a fuller, and is simply painted black, instead of being blued. The Japanese Type 30 lacks any kind of marks, and looks almost mint condition. Condition: generally good. Normal age and service wear to the Swedish example, with darkening to the steel, along with some minor dents, and a small corrosion patch on the chape. Clean blade, with just a few dark spots. The Indian bayonet retains much of its black painted finish, with wooden grips having a dark patination and the remains of a white or light coloured stripe (perhaps for drill purposes) around the circumference of the grips. The reproduction Japanese bayonet is in very good condition, with just some minor surface spotting to the pommel area.

Lot 158

A WW1 era 1915 dated German Mauser butcher’s bayonet. With diagonally ridged wooden slab grips, ‘birds beak’ pommel, and push button release catch. Plain backpiece, and simple quillon (no muzzle ring), with this having the serial number of 134. Ricasso maker marked for ERFURT, and the Imperial Prussian crown. Dated to the flattened spine, with the crown, letter W and 15 for 1915. Blade of usual form, widening towards the tip, and having a single fuller. Lacking the saw edge, which is not uncommon to see as many were ground off. The scabbard is the all metal variety, used from 1915 onwards, with teardrop shaped frog stud. The scabbard has possibly been repainted in its lifetime, and has a thick black glossy appearance. Approximately 52cm in its scabbard, blade length 36.6cm. Condition: generally good. Some normal age and service wear, with the blade having a mottled appearance in places. The grips are good, and the button catch works as it should. Some grease residue to the blade, but this will clean off. The scabbard has a couple of small shallow dents, and there is some paint chipping in various places.

Lot 228

Straight cross guard with muzzle ring, and a straight single edged blade with fuller. Complete with an all steel scabbard with frog stud. Egyptian marked to the pommel area and the throat of the scabbard. Approximately 35cm in its scabbard, blade length 20.8cm. Condition: generally good. Some normal age and service wear, with some minor chipping / loss to the wooden grips. Darkening and a little scratching to the blade.

Lot 186

An early 20th century Jambiya dagger, likely Moroccan in origin. Comprising of a shaped wooden handle, with chased brass pommel following the outline of the handle. Curved single edge steel blade, with no apparent marks. Interestingly, the scabbard is made in two halves, from different metals. The ‘presentation’ side is much more finely chased with decorative scrolls and foliage, and this would seem to be a low grade sheet silver. To reverse side, worn against the clothing, is less profusely decorated and made in a brass metal. As is usual, there are 2 suspension rings attached to the scabbard. The dagger is together with a carved sandalwood cigarette box, likely Indian in origin, and dating from the 1930’s / WW2 era. The dagger measures approximately 37cm in length, with the blade length being 20.5cm. The box measures 15cm x 9.7cm x 3.5cm. Condition: some age related wear to the dagger. The wooden handle has some small old small fractures from shrinkage, and 3 tiny holes near the pommel (possibly old woodworm?). Some denting to the metal on the pommel, and some normal contact marks to the sheet silver on the scabbard. The blade shows evidence of sharpening, and has scratching and some darkening to the steel in places. The box is in good condition.

Lot 183

A German made Portuguese M1904 bayonet, by Simson & Co, Suhl. With wooden slab grips secured by 2 screws, and a birds beak pommel with button release catch (pommel with serial number 2237) Short cross guard with muzzle ring. Single edged parkerised blade, with fuller, and makers mark at the ricasso. Complete with parkerised scabbard, with teardrop shaped frog stud, and ball shaped chape. Approximately 41.2cm in scabbard, blade length 28.4cm. Condition: generally solid, but some service wear. Some loss of finish to the pommel and cross guard area. Working release catch to the pommel. Most of parkerised finish remaining to blade, with normal track lines apparent. A little surface wear to the scabbard, but otherwise good condition.

Lot 171

A WW2 era United States USM3 fighting knife, with its USM8 scabbard. Known as the 3rd type, the knife is marked only to the guard, with this reading ‘US M3 UTICA’ for Utica Cutlery Co - this would likely date it to circa 1944. The cross guard is interesting in the fact that is has an unusual S shaped profile, possibly a period modification. The grip consists of a serious of stacked leather washers, with flat steel pommel to the end (the pommel marked with US flaming grenade mark). The blade is single edged, with a false edge near the tip, and is of flattened diamond form. The scabbard is formed from fibres reinforced with plastic, and it retains its olive drab colour. The throat is steel, and is marked ‘US M8’ and has the manufactures mark of BM Co. The scabbard features an integral green webbing belt loop, with retaining strap and press stud. Approximately 30.5cm in scabbard, blade length 16.5cm. Condition: some age and service wear. The leather grip shows normal service wear and patination, but remains intact. The steel cross guard and pommel have darkened with age, but remain in good order. The blade is relatively clean and bright, with minor mottling to the surface in places. The plastic scabbard shows more wear, with the often seen missing tip to the end where it has broken away. There is also some cracking to the edge, and there is a little movement to this area.

Lot 169

A reproduction WW1 1917 dated Indian army MKII Kukri knife and associated leather scabbard. Polished wooden handle, secured by two brass and steel rivets, and fitted with two brass rings and a brass butt plate. The curved blade is marked for the Cossipore factory and Indian War Department, a 1917 date, and and the serial number 37. The leather sheath is a dark tan colour, and has been distressed or aged. It’s belt loops are present, but have come lose from the main body of the sheath. Length approximately 47cm, blade length 33cm. Condition: generally good. A small surface rust patch to the blade, but is otherwise clean condition. A little wear and patination to the handle, but it remains solid. The sheath shows wear, but as mentioned above, this appears to have been artificially aged.

Lot 187

A WW1 era German all steel Erzatz bayonet circa 1914/15, with a good proportion of the original field grey paint remaining to the handle and scabbard. The grip has diagonally cut grooves, with a birds beak pommel and button release catch. Open muzzle ring and slightly curled over quillon to the guard. Singled edged blade with fuller, and flattened spine, with the latter being stamped with a J with a crown, and a P with a crown. The scabbard has a groove cut to each side of the front face, and a ball chape. Complete with a black leather frog, which has some indistinct marks to the reverse of the belt loop area. Approximately 45.6cm in the scabbard, blade length 30.5cm. Condition: generally good. Normal age and service wear, with the green painted finish rubbed away ib places, and the bare metal now being a deep russet colour. The button release catch works as it should. The blade is a little darkened, and there is some minor mottling. The scabbard is complete, with just honest wear to the painted surface. The leather frog is complete, but there is a little cracking to the belt loop area.

Lot 181

A 20th century reproduction of the very rare 1849 Ames Manufacturing Co mounted rifleman’s knife. Dark wood handle with tubular brass rivet at the pommel. Brass cross guard with the correct stamped marking of ‘WD  JWR’ and punched name details to the other side (it’s former owner?). Single edged blade with rounded spine, and false to the last 4 or so inches. Marked ‘US WD’ to one side of the ricasso, and ‘Ames MFG Co Cabotsville 1849’ to the other side. The wooden handle also has some numbers punched or embossed into the wood on one side. Complete with tooled dark leather scabbard, with brass throat and chape. Notes: the contract for the original knife was ordered in 1848, with only 1000 believed to have been made. The biggest giveaway on the piece is the misspelling of ‘Cabotville’, with this knife having an S in it, and it incorrectly reading as ‘Cabotsville’. Reproductions were made in various locations in the 20th century, such as Japan and India, but it’s difficult to say where this originated from. The piece has likely been made in the last 50 years, and does show some signs of a little age. This is a more affordable piece, with originals now realising thousands in the auction market. Approximately 49.2cm in its scabbard, blade length 30.3cm. Condition: generally good. Some wear and contact marks to the handle, and some scratching / nicks to the brass cross guard. Some matting to the blade, but this otherwise remains good. The scabbard is good, with just a little verdigris spotting in places.

Lot 192

A 19th century P1876 Martini Henry socket bayonet. Likely of the Zulu war era, and only carry the Enfield inspection and the ‘WD’ war department mark and broad arrow mark (from mid 1882, bayonets of this kind were dated). Of standard form, with a triangular cross section blade, with each side having a shallow fuller. Marked with the serial number of 146 to the collar section. Approximately 52cm in length. Condition: generally good. Some odd small spots of surface rust in places, but these should be removable without too much bother. Good overall colour to the steel, with just a little dark mottling in places. The scabbard is absent.

Lot 168

A scarce WW1 era United States 1913 pattern Remington bayonet, converted in the post WW2 era to a fighting knife for the French Foreign Legion (believed to be a ‘stop gap’ weapon). With correct ‘1913’ pattern stamped to the ricasso, and the date of ‘2  16’ for February 1916. The reverse side of the ricasso shows various stamped British inspection marks, a War Department broad arrow, and an ‘X’ bend test mark. With slab wooden grips, each with the distinctive double groove cut into each side. The cross guard has had its muzzle ring ground off, with this now being of oval form. The blade has been shortened, with the fuller now all the way down to the point of the blade. The original green leather scabbard has also been shortened, with metal throat having been repositioned and stapled into place. The bayonet also has been fitted with a tan coloured leather frog, with press stud retaining strap, which is correct for this type of conversion. Both blade and other metal parts have been blackened, which is a feature seen on other conversions of this type. Some sources suggest that this type of knife was issued as recently as the 1970’s in Zaire. An interesting piece, that may have seen service in two World Wars before its conversion. Approximately 35cm in the scabbard, blade length 18.7cm. Condition: good. Some normal patination and service wear to the wooden grips, and a little light contact wear / scuffing to the leather scabbard. The blade is good, and the button release catch to the pommel still works as it should.

Lot 170

A Czech VZ-58 bayonet, complete with its 1982 dated leather sheath. Produced from 1958 through to 1984, and still in use today. Of later production, with bonded particle board grips secured by 2 rivets, an extended cross guard, and parkerised blade. The blade is single edged with a fuller, and a false edge near the tip. Marked ‘12d46’ at the ricasso, and an ink stamp to the sheath, which reads: K6 ‘Crossed Swords’ 82, OTK Serie 2’. Approximately 29cm not including sheath. Together with WW1 era United States Remington 1913 pattern bayonet, with date stamp for December 1915, and the British broad arrow mark, bend test mark, and inspection stamps. Complete with its usual wooden slab grips with double notch, steel pommel with button release catch, and cross guard with muzzle ring. The bayonet is accompanied by its metal mounted leather scabbard. Approximately 57.2cm in its scabbard, blade length 42.7cm. Condition: generally good. Some light service to the Czech example, with a little staining to the leather sheath. The WW1 Remington example has overall darkening to the steel parts, with pitting to the cross guard and pommel. Some service wear to the scabbard, but this remains intact.
