A RARE 1ST DRAGOON GUARDS OFFICER'S SWORD SUITE TO THE ELMSALL FAMILY, comprising a scarce Celtic hilt sword with 86cm curved pipe backed blade with recurving spear point, regulation steel hilt with Celtic decorated bowl guard, wire bound fish skin grip, some losses, stepped flattened pommel, contained in its steel scabbard, together with its companion Heavy Cavalry Officer's 1796 Pattern Ladder Hilted sword, 86cm curved pipe backed blade with spear point, etched with a maker's panel at the forte for Brander & Potts, regulation pierced steel hilt, wire bound fishskin grip, leather liner, contained in its steel scabbard, together with a 1796 Pattern Heavy Cavalry Officer's dress of "Boatshell" sword, 80.5cm fullered blade, regulation copper gilt hilt with D-shaped knuckle guard, spherical pommel, silver wire bound grip, contained in its steel scabbard and a related 1854 Pattern Royal Engineer's NCO's sword, of characteristic Gothic hilt form and with various Ordnance stamps to include regimental markings for the Royal Engineers, scored through, and the 3rd Volunteer Battalion Devons, contained in its field service scabbard. (4) When purchased by the Vendor it was stated that these four swords had formerly belonged to the Elmsall family. While there is no documentary proof or engraved crest or initials the Royal Engineer's sword provides a minor piece of corroboration in as much as William Edward de Cardonell Elmsall served with the Royal Engineers during the First World War. A GEORGIAN PRESENTATION SWORD TO CAPTAIN WILLIAM BACE OF THE 61ST REGIMENT OF FOOT (SOUTH GLOUCESTERSHIRE), 70cm sharply curved blade decorated with stands of arms, scrolling foliage and crowned GR cypher, copper gilt neoclassical hilt with D-shaped knuckle guard and acanthus engraved pommel and backstrap, faceted ivory grip, contained in its copper gilt panel scabbard with red leather inserts and decorated over all with neoclassical designs, a stand of arms and the presentation inscription From Lieut Col Herford to Lieut William Bace of the 1st Batt 61 Foot In Gratitude for his Valour and Support in the Action at Toulouse June 8th 1814. Highly unusually Captain William Bace (1779-1852) had previously been promoted from the Ranks. Bace served with the South Gloucestershire Regiment in the Cape of Good Hope, Egypt and Italy. In 1812 he applied to join the 1st Battalion in Spain, which he did by financing his own passage, and thenceforth served in the Peninsular at 'Huebra'/San Munoz in November 1812, Blockade of Pamplona in July 1813, Battles of the Pyrenees 28 July to 2 August 1813, Battle of the Nivelle 10 November 1813, Battles of the Nive 9 to 13 December 1813, Blockade of Bayonne December 1813 to February 1814, Battle of Orthes 27 February 1814 61 Regmt the Advance Guard, and various minor affairs - almost daily skirmishing with the enemy until the Battle of Toulouse 10 April 1814 - horse shot under him - commanded the 1st Battalion 61st for several hours in that Battle and the following day. Received a Commanding Officer's Gold Medal in Honour of the Battle of Toulouse.

Some patination towards the tip and scabbard fractured otherwise nice clear regimental etched details.

J. GAIRDNER from Col. U. Yule 1823. As a junior officer William John Gairdner served with the Native Infantry in operations in the Oudh during 1813 and 1814 - Rewah and Etah, Nepal War and Bareilly during 1816, The Third Mahrattan War, First Burma War, Gwalior Operations and the First Sikh War. Entitled to C.B, Army of India Medal 1799-1826 Nepal and Ava, Maharajpoor Star and the Sutlej Medal.

OF INDIAN MUTINY INTEREST AN 1845 PATTERN INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD TO MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM HENRY KERR, 83cm slightly curved blade by Wilkinson, serial no. 8590 for 1857, etched with scrolling foliage, crowned VR cyphers and a maker's panel, regulation copper gilt Gothic hilt incorporating a crowned VR cypher and folding side guard, wire bound fishskin grip, contained in its brass scabbard. Complete with an extensive folder of research on the service of Major General William Kerr giving particular emphasis to the Indian Mutiny and his actions at Amorah, Nuggur, Bhansee, Hurryah etc which earned him an MID. Previously this sword resided in the collection of the late Brigadier Richard Holmes CBE, TD, VR, JP.
