A RARE VICTORIAN ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS OFFICER'S DIRK BY MARSHALL & SONS OF EDINBURGH marked to the top mount and with registration diamond for 26th March 1864, the basket weave carved baluster handle with simple collet set pommel with foil backed crystal, the mount with Regimental name, the etched blade with Regimental name, number and royal cypher, with owner's initials stamped ‘HFCJ’, the leather-covered wooden scabbard with silver mount with XCI and Victorian cypher, set with side by side bi knife and fork Dimensions:Blade 25.5cm long, overall 43cm Note: Note: The initials etched to the blade have made it possible to attribute this dirk as the personal dirk carried by Henry F Campbell-Johnston, who rose to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant, 5th June 1875 and Lieutenant two years later in 1877. He served in the Zulu War of 1879, was present at the battle of Ginginhlovo and relief of Ekowe and was awarded medal and bar. He was invalided home shortly after. He would later serve in Mauritius with a smaller detachment of the regiment.

A late 19th century Indian Tulwar sword. Of traditional form, and of all steel construction. Disc shaped pommel with spike finial. Cross guard with convex quillons, plus long langets to each side of the blade. Curved single edge blade, un-fullered, and hammer marks to each side. Complete with leather covered wooden scabbard. Approximately 91cm when in scabbard, blade length 72cm. Condition: generally good. Signs of age and service wear, plus some darkening of the steel in places. The leather scabbard is good, with a nice overall patina.

A 19th century 1855 pattern Imperial Prussian Faschinenmesser Fascine Knife / short sword or Pioneer’s sword. Brass cross guard with curled quillon, solid brass ribbed grip, backpiece and pommel. Steel single edged blade, with flat spine. Complete with original matched leather scabbard, with brass fittings. Notes: the blade is marked PDL for Peter D Luneschloss. Both the cross guard and brass throat on the scabbard are identically marked 12.A.F.7.18. Approximately 65.5cm in the scabbard - blade length 47.7cm. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Brass hilt is good, with light service wear. Blade has darkened in places, with pitting near the near the tip. The scabbard is complete, but the leather is a little dry, and the brass chape is dented.

Lot 80

An early 19th century French 1817 pattern Sabre Briquet. German made blade, stamped Klingenthal to the spine. Cast brass handle, with D shaped knuckle guard, 28 ribbed grip, and curled over quillon. Slightly curved steel singled edged blade, un-fullered, with flat spine. Complete with original polished leather scabbard with brass fittings. Other than the blade makers name to the spine, there appears to be no other marks. Approximately 73cm in the scabbard, blade length 57cm. Condition: generally good. Normal light service wear to the brass handle, plus some light track marks and scratching to the blade. The leather scabbard has a good colour and patina, and the brass fittings are complete, but have some dents. The brass throat with the frog stud is a little wobbly on the leather, due to the tack or staple missing.

Lot 16

A mid 20th century or earlier, Kenyan Mau Mau machete knife. Single edge steel blade with squared off end section. Leather covered handle with further painted leather strip grips applied around the circumference. Accompanied by a broad leather sheath of painted leather, with further leather tassel decoration. Notes: information supplied by the vendor states that the item was brought back from Kenya by the District Commissioner of Kenya in 1958. Approximately 55cm length when in scabbard - blade length 37.5cm. Condition: generally good. Some dark spots to the blade and evidence of sharpening. Some wear to the painted leather surface from service wear, plus minor wear to the chape area of the sheath. Good overall patina to the leather and blade.

Lot 12

A Prussian naval dirk, with leather sheath. Leather grip with twisted wire biding, brass pommel, and brass cross guard, the latter with fouled anchor and lions head terminals (the lions head also have inset paste jewelled eyes). Steel double edged blade with double fuller to both sides, seemingly no makers marks. Stiffened leather sheath with integral belt loop. Notes: the dirk would have originally had a metal scabbard, likely brass. There is a rectangular slot where the release catch once was, and a recess at the ricasso as testament to this. The leather sheath is an extremely good fit, and was likely made to fit the blade in the absence of the metal scabbard. Approximately 34.5cm length when in scabbard, blade length 21.9cm. Condition: generally good. Missing release catch mechanism as mentioned above. A little wear to the leather handle commensurate with service use. All brass parts are good, as is the leather sheath.

Lot 65

A scarce M1827 Imperial Russian sawback falchion heavy pioneer’s sword. Heavy weight brass handle with ribbed grip section, curled quillons, plain backpiece, and a curved pommel. Wide steel, slightly curved blade with large toothed sawback edge, plus a regular cutting edge. Single fuller with blunted tip. Dated 1832 to the brass cross guard, plus BH and AC, and a Russian Cyrillic mark to the blade near the ricasso. Approximately 66cm length. Condition: generally good. Some service wear to the handle, with a few shallow knocks to the backpiece. Blade is clean and relatively bright - the plain cutting edge has a few nicks along the length. Of note is brass slotted strap having been soldered to the handle near the cross guard. This is possibly a period battlefield modification. It’s likely that this could be removed if desired. Scabbard is absent.

Lot 105

A Middle Eastern style Khanjar knife with scabbard. Wooden grips with simple inlaid decoration, nickel plated brass pommel and guard. Steel single edged curved blade, with 3 punched star marks near the ricasso. Complete with nickel plated brass guard, with chased decoration featuring a lion and deer. 2 suspension chains to each side of the scabbard. Plus, a vintage brass United States Lines letter opener. The Khanjar measures approximately 23.5cm. Condition: some wear to the nickel plating on the pommel, guard and sheath. The blade is good, and shows evidence of sharpening. The pointed tip of the letter opener is a little crumpled.

Lot 63

A Japanese Wakizashi short sword. Cord Tsuka hilt binding over a ray skin handle, with gilt Menuki ornament to both sides. Iron Tsuba with simple chased foliage decoration. Copper Sepoa and Habaki. Copper Fuchi with flower decoration that matches the Kashira (end cap). Steel single edged blade, contained in a lacquered ‘Saya’ scabbard. Recess to the scabbard for holding a Kozuka (now absent). Tang is signed to both sides, and is plugged in 2 places, which may suggest an older blade. Approximately 56.8cm total length. Blade length 34.2cm. Condition: generally very good. Missing the Kuri-kata for attaching cord, plus the Kojiri end cap on the scabbard. Bindings to handle are intact, and Menuki are well attached in place. Silvered bird ornamentation to Fuch and Kashira have worn to the high points to reveal the copper base metal. Iron Tsuba has some play to it, and has a darkened finish and patina commensurate with age. The blade is clean, with minor surface mottling, with 2 small nicks to the cutting edge near the tip. Lacquered Saya has some losses to the finish and a couple of knocks, and part of one of the metal mounts is absent, but is otherwise sturdy and complete.

Lot 34

An 1897 pattern WW1 era British infantry officers sword, with unusual non pieced guard. Steel guard with nickel plating, with engraved crown and cypher of George V. Shagreen grip with wire binding, chequered backpiece, and knopped finial. Leather washer at ricasso, steel blade with fuller to both sides. Marked for Fenton Brothers Ltd Sheffield, ‘Sword Cutlers to the War Office’. Also proof marked to the reverse. Complete with brown leather field scabbard. The only piercing to the hilt being a small slot for the sword knot. Approximately 108cm when in scabbard. Condition: generally good solid condition, with some service wear. Some lift to the plating on the outside of the guard, with some discolouration to the inside. Clean blade with clear makers details. Leather field scabbard is generally good, but is missing the leather securing strap.

Lot 115

WW2 era German dress bayonet with associated scabbard. Nickel plated pommel, cross guard and blade, the latter single edged and with fuller to both sides. Original leather washer at ricasso. Black painted scabbard with frog stud. The item appears to be lacking any makers mark. Approximately 40.5cm length when in scabbard. Condition: very good. Some dulling to the nickel finish on the pommel and cross guard. The blade is clean and bright with only minor wear. The scabbard is very good, with very little paint loss.

Lot 118

Scarce WW1 German Mauser ersatz bayonet. All steel construction, with push button release catch on the pommel. Single edged steel blade with fuller to both sides. The cross guard has the distinctive open muzzle ring, which allowed to be used on captured French Lebel or Russian Mosin-Nagant rifles. Complete with steel scabbard and leather frog, the latter dated 1931. The bayonet appears to be undated, but there is a faint inspection stamp to the spine of the blade. Approximately 47cm length including scabbard and frog. Condition: generally good. Patination to the metal throughout, commensurate with age and service wear. Some very light surface corrosion to the scabbard in places. Leather frog is good condition.

Lot 18

A late 19th / early 20th century Malayan Bade Bade knife. Hardwood ebonised handle, with single edged long and narrow steel blade. Complete with a carved tiger wood sheath. Approximately 26.5cm length in scabbard - blade length 17.5cm. Condition: some wear and tea to the wooden handle and scabbard. Fracture to the handle that run almost its entire length. Split along the length of the wooden scabbard, but it is still solid. The steel blade has darkened and still has a keen edge. The scabbard would appear its chape missing.

Lot 41

A 19th century Afghan tribal Khyber Knife. A well made piece of traditional form, with a wide blade tapering to a sharo point, and a T-back spine for strength. Part engraved blade and short single fuller to both sides. Steel backpiece with small metal knop to pommel, plus ridged wooden slab grips. Complete with original leather scabbard with profusely decorated brass chape. Approximately 83cm when in scabbard. Blade length 59.5cm. Condition: generally very good. Blade has some darkening and mottling to both side, plus a slight loss to the cutting edge - the blade still remains extremely sharp. The handle is good, as is the scabbard, which has minor denting to the brass chape and slight loss of leather near the throat.

Lot 93

A 19th century Victorian British Navy midshipman’s dirk. Brass cross guard with integral release catch, fouled anchor langet, and acorn tipped quillons. Lion’s head pommel, with its mane forming the backpiece. Wire binding to the grip, which would of originally had a fish skin covering, but this would appear to have perished. Brass ring through the lions mouth, onto which is fitted a bullion dress knot. Steel single edged blade, with etched decoration, including Queen Victoria’s VR cypher and crown, plus a fouled anchor. Complete with leather scabbard, with engraved brass throat and chape. 2 suspension rings attached to the brass throat. Approximately 60cm length in scabbard, blade length 45cm. Condition: generally solid, with service wear. The fish skin grips have perished, leaving only traces to the wooden base, which has been painted to mimic the original colour. Some parts of the wire binding are also missing from the handle. Some minor dents to the brass throat and chape on the scabbard. The bullion knot has darkened with age and is mostly intact. A few darkened patches and surface corrosion to the blade.

Lot 11

A 19th century kris, likely Malaysian in origin. Carved hardwood handle with gilt brass mount. Steel blade house in a repousee silver mounted scabbard. Approximately 43cm length when in scabbard. Condition: handle at fault. The handle has a large chip to the extremity, likely to have happened some time ago judging by the colour. There is also a crack running along half the length. The gilt brass mount also has a couple of petals missing from the  The blade has darkened and there is some pitting. The silver mounted scabbard has some light denting and a small split to the seam at the edge.

Lot 57

A scarce Japanese M1889 Type 32 NCO’s sword Otsu. Steel guard with chequered backpiece and chequered wooden grip. Slot to hilt near the pommel to allow the fitting of a sword knot. Blade release catch fitted to the handle. Steel, slightly curved single edged blade with flat spine and single fuller - the tip of the blade being of katana style. Serial number stamped to the ricasso, which matches the number stamped to the chape of the scabbard. Scabbard of steel construction, with single single suspension ring. Possible makers marks to the guard, but these are lost within the patina of the metal and are unreadable. Approximately 92cm total length - blade length 77cm. Notes: this particular example is shorter ‘Otsu’ sword issued to NCO’s, the officers version (Ko) is approximately 6cm longer to the blade. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Overall dark patina to the guard, likely original black painted finish. Wooden intact, but with slight scuffing. Blade is good, with minor mottling in places, plus some minor pitting marks. The scabbard has overall darkened patina, and some denting to the lower section.

Lot 15

A late 19th / early 20th century German made sheath knife. Antler handle with silver plated mounts. Steel single edged blade, marked ‘Solingen’. Polished leather sheath with silver plate throat mount. Approximately 21cm length when in scabbard. Condition: generally good. Some wear to the plated mounts, handle is good, blade darkened in places. Some wear to the sheath at the end (this possibly had a metal chape at some point).

Lot 49

Iron Tsuba has some play to it, and has a darkened finish and patina commensurate with age. The blade is clean, with minor surface mottling, small nick to the cutting edge near the tip. Lacquered Saya has some losses to the finish and a couple of knocks, but is otherwise sturdy and complete. Please note: We have not been able to remove handle to reveal the tang.

Lot 20

A 19th century Chinese Shuang jian paired swords or ‘butterfly knives’. Two short swords fitting back to back within one scabbard. Both have wrythen carved wooden grips, brass half pommels and guards, the latter with bamboo moulded outline. Steel single edged blade with very slight curve to each. Complete with shagreen scabbard with brass mounts to the throat, body and chape area. Approximately 72cm length when in scabbard - blade length 50cm. Condition: generally good, with some service wear. Some barely noticeable hairline fractures to both wooden grips, with both having good even patination. Both brass guards have some ‘wobble’ to them, plus the pommel on one of the swords - these are still securely attached. Both blades are good, with minor mottling to the surface along their length. The shagreen scabbard is good, as are the brass mounts. The mid section of brass mount has some movement (it slides up and down), but is still securely fixed. There has been some age related shrinkage to the scabbards, which mean that both swords are difficult to push all the way in.

Lot 110

An early type SS honour dagger by Gottlieb Hammesfahr, with scarce leather vertical dagger hanger by Assmann & Sohne. Early anodised scabbard with nickel fitting. Double edged blade, with motto etched to one side, and the makers mark to the other side. One piece wooden handle, with inset national eagle and SS motif. Dark brown leather belt hanger with nickel fitting, marked A for Assmann and DRGM. Approximately 37cm length. Condition: generally very good. The blade is clean and bright, with just the usual track marks from the scabbard. Both the motto and makers mark are clear and well defined. The wooden grip is damage free and shows only minor contact marks. The scabbard shows light wear to the anodised surface and just a very minor dent to one side. There is a split to the nickel ball chape. The leather hanger shows only normal service wear and is free from splits and other damage.

Lot 38

An 18th century continental rapier sword, with brass clamshell guard, knuckle bow and pommel. Copper twisted wire binding to the handle. Narrow double edged blade, with short but deep fuller to both sides. Marked identically to both sides of the blade, with a cluster of punched star marks, an anchor type motif and the name ‘Antoni Ruiz’. The U in Ruiz is actually a backward letter N. The scabbard is absent. Approximately 97.5cm length. Condition: very good. The brass guard is intact and has a good age related patina, with remnants of old polish in the recesses of the design. Copper wire binding to the handle is intact. Blade is good, with some darkening and mottling to the surface.

Lot 22

A 19th century Italian M1870 1st pattern Vetterli bayonet, with associated scabbard and leather frog. Wooden slab grips, with steel pommel, cross guard and quillon. Single edged blade with fuller to both sides, marked ‘RS’ and ‘Terni’ at the ricasso. The cross guard is marked KU9648, and ‘CN’ to the other side. Leather scabbard with steel throat and chape, plus leather frog. The frog is marked ‘BAG’ and is indistinctly marked 1915. Approximately 53.5cm length including frog. Blade length 33.8cm. Condition: generally very good. Good all round patination to the steel parts. Press stud fitting to the pommel works as it should. Good patination to the leather scabbard and frog. Split to the leather where the frog stud passes through the hole.

Lot 43

An American P1914 bayonet, with makers mark for Remington and 1917 date at the ricasso. Wooden slab grips with usual double grooves to each side. Blued pommel, cross guard and ricasso area. Single edged blade with fuller to both sides. Black leather scabbards with steel throat and chape, the throat stamped RE. Approximately 57.5cm when in scabbard. Condition: generally very good. Much of the blueing still present to the hilt. Service wear to the scabbard, with crease to the leather part. Wooden grips intact, blade good with light track marks to the surface from the scabbard.

Lot 108

WW2 era German army officer’s dress dagger, with original hanging straps. Orange celluloid grip with oak leaf patterned nickel plated pommel. Usual cross guard depicting the national eagle and swastika, with scroll ends. Pebbled nickel plated scabbard with 2 suspension rings. Double edged blade marked ‘WKC Solingen’ at the ricasso. Silver braided straps with olive green velvet backing. Overall length 40cm, blade length 25cm. Condition: generally good, with service wear. Hairline crack to the celluloid grip coming down from the pommel. Some minor wear to the nickel plating in places. The scabbard is dented to both sides near the chape. Straps in good condition.
