GC (blade etching faint, some plating wear, mostly to scabbard). Plate 1

An unusual 1796 pattern light cavalry sword, curved shallow fullered blade 32½” marked on one side “John Gill’s Warranted” and “May I Conquer or Die” with flourishes in oval, regulation steel stirrup hilt with langets, plain pommel and backstrap with ears, ribbed leather grip (restored) in its steel scabbard (painted black) with 2 rings. An officer’s 1821 pattern sword of the Madras Artillery, c 1850, slightly curved, fullered blade 32½”, by Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, (without no. on backstrap), etched with crowned VR cypher, winged lightning and “Madras Artillery” in scrolled foliate panels, with owner’s crest and motto “Stand Sure”, regulation steel hilt with sideloop and 2 sidebars, stepped pommel, chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin (mostly worn away) grip, in later leather covered FS scabbard. Basically GC (edge nicks to blade, pitted at forte) Plate 1 Note: Fairbairns “Crests” shows this crest and motto relating to 3 Scottish families: Adson, Anderson of Airdbreck and Winterfield, and Porter.
An interesting family sword, being an 1854 pattern officer’s sword of the Coldstream Guards, slightly curved, fullered, plated blade 32” by Henry Wilkinson, Pall Mall, London, no 141104 (for 1865) on backstrap, etched with crowned VR cypher, regimental badge, laurel wreath, 10 battle honour scrolls “Egypt” and Sphinx to (later added) “Magersfontein”, with family crest and scroll “L.P. Dawnay”, silver plated regulation hilt incorporating regimental badge, chequered backstrap, wirebound fishskin grip, in its plated scabbard. GC (minor plating wear and bubbling) Plate 1 Note: The sword of the Hon. Lewis Payn Dawnay, 2nd Son of the 7th Viscount Downe (Ensign Coldstream Gds 1865, retired Lt Col 1882) and then of his son, Guy Payan Dawnay, DSO (Lieut. Coldstream Gds 1899, distinguished career, retired Major General 1919) who served throughout the Boer War, including Magersfontein, and evidently had that battle honour added to the blade which was then chromed and the hilt silver plated.
A 20th century Borneo head hunter’s sword Mandau, blade 24” inlaid with copper studs, the carved bone hilt with hair tufts and plaited wire bound grip, in its carved bone mounted scabbard with bands of trimmed red and black hair, the pierced bone panels backed with silver foil. Basically GC (worn, one bone panel missing)

An interesting WWI German trench sidearm, fullered 1898/05 Seitengewehr bayonet blade, marked Simson & Co at forte, steel hilt with flat knucklebow, turned down sideguard and 2 sidebars, plain pommel and backstrap with ears, ribbed wooden grip, in its steel scabbard with frog stud. Basically GC, the blade sound (grip cracked, hilt and scabbard medium to deep pitting). Plate 1
