Captain Stanley Cotterell Seymour Horser, 17th Battalion, The KingÍs, Liverpool Regiment (1st Liverpool Pals) killed in action, on the Somme, 12th of October 1916 An 1897 Pattern Infantry OfficerÍs Sword, straight single-fullered blade, 82cm long, etched with GRV Royal arms and cypher, foliage and ïS.C. Seymour HorserÍ, ïThe KingsÍ, regulation pierced steel hilt with GRV cartouche, wire-bound fish-skin grip, in its steel mounted, brown leather field scabbard. Captain Stanley Cotterell Seymour Horser, was born on the 29th of December 1894, son of P. G. Horser, of York Street, St. JamesÍs Square, London, and educated at New College, Oxford, where he was in the Cricket XI in 1914 and the Hockey Team, 1913/14. Commisioned December 1914 into the Liverpool Pals, later promoted to Captain, and posted to France, he was killed in action on the Somme on the 12th of October 1916. The ïPalsÍ had attacked, only to find the German wire un-cut, hostile machine-gun fire taking a heavy toll of the assaulting men, ten officers including Captain Horser fell along with two hundred and fifty three other ranks. Captain Horser has no known grave, but is remembered with honour at the Thiepval Memorial.
